  • New Amsterdam Travel Video- The Marker Wadden is a man-made archipelago built in Lake Markermeer for the purpose of improving the area's natural eco-systems. Ever since a dam was built splitting the Ijsselmeer into two bodies of water (now with the Markermeer), bird and fish populations declined. In 2016 the Natuurmonumenten constructed islands, marshes and flats in the Markermeer 9 km. from Lelystad to rejuvenate plant, sea animal, fish and bird life. A part of one of the islands has been open to the public since 2018, welcoming nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts and birdwatchers. A series of walkways connect several birdwatching huts and towers getting you as close to the wildlife without disturbing it. The Natuurmonumenten offers boat trips to the island from Lelystad. A great way to see another side of the Netherlands.
