Drew's perspective about school and learning is so admirable. I love how he said that it is not personalised and there are certain "standards". This is the reason why some students are always burnout and keep getting lazier in school because their grades are the basis of society now. People label them in terms of academics but didn't realize the learning system is not just for them. Well, yes. Our experiences are different to one another but Drew really has a point and as you think it more, it just keeps making sense.
I really look up this couple. They are such an inspiration and I will not get surprised if their children grow up so smart and compassionate towards people. Thank you so much for having them! 🧡

im thinkin the same thing like Drew. its like "one size fits all" system, and the test scores are the definition of success, so kids are being taught that you should not fail. Actually, we should let the kids fail at times and let them learn.

I can really relate from this. One of my frustrations was I was not recognized by my teachers way back in Elementary.
    "maxine, nagsasayaw ka pala."
I was shy way back, and introverted. I felt being underestimated, as if like I can't do those things. Teachers were only invested on selected students who were competent enough. Most teachers were biased.
I am really thankful when I stepped in highschool, the curriculum was not a box. They let us explore our talents and adapted the "Multiple intelligence" approach. You can excel not just in acads but also in music, arts, dance and so much more.

Wow having kids myself, this convo about sending kids to school gives me that realization na marami sa alam ko sa buhay were not learnt from school, I hardly passed my exams plus people always compared me to my classmate cousin who was an achiever, that makes me feel less as a kid until teenage years. I remember I can't concentrate on what my teachers are teaching because I was insecured, I am concerned of my broken P.E shoes or yellowish old uniform and others stuff my parents can't afford to buy. I was bullied, most of us were and I still have those sad memories with me that I am scared my kids will experience them too..
I also have good memories by the way and got good friends but I do agree with these couples about learning outside school.

I thought mali ang pag tingin ko towards sa education system until those explanations of Drew and Iya quoted the exact words.
Learning shouldn't be a platform and "one fits all" curicullum. The desire to learn and the curiosity to know different things should be the starting point para matuto (at magkaroon ng mas madiin na pagka tuto) not the system that we're currently in... pati baseline on how to set standard para tukuyin yung intelligence naka base sa grades.
Thank you so much for the enlightenment. Pag nagka pamilya ako I would do the same thing. Noted!

I agree so much about the concept of having the kids decide what they want to learn and not just box them. To which my inner child is slowly absorbing right now. At 23, I realized the same thing, "ano nga ba'ng natutunan ko?", but then again, life must go on. I have to enjoy this certain point of my life knowing that this too shall pass. What matters is that I apply what I learned in school, learn how to manage my finances, and not just work my ass off with a short-term plan. Everyday is a chance to learn something new which will benefit you in the long run. Kudos to this podcast, more to go po!

You can try reading and researching about Finland's education system, it's really more of "Learning by doing" learning takes place through various experiences which grade (number or letters) doesn't matter most especially in preschool, elem, and middle. Look at their focus to childs emotional, physical and etc environment.

Hi, Slater and Kryz! I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to disagree with the part that school boxes you in. Respectfully hehe. ✌🏻 While I agree that you definitely learn a lot outside of school, the academic institution has been millennia old for a reason. It has evolved through time, a never-ending cycle of assessment and improvement (e.g. curricular changes, pedagogies, etc.) -- and with good reason. More and more research has been done to determine what styles work, what parameters to use in order to assess learning, etc. Just a background, I'm not an educator, but I've been in school a big chunk of my life, finishing several academic degrees (undergraduate, MD, PhD); and it is true: you learn a lot outside of school. But you also learn a lot outside your home. I guess the part where Iya and Drew acknowledged this is when they had thought about bringing their kids to travel the world. But the social and psychological aspects that you learn by experience in school, from how you interact with your peers, with bullies; from having to deal with successes and failures, with heartbreak; from everyday opportunities to share with a classmate your baon, or to compliment your seatmate's new shoes, or to be laughed at during one of your bad hair days -- they are what make life interesting. And one day when you reunite with a classmate, you will reminisce at the time your professor farted so loudly in class. Yes, school may be expensive, but school literally plays a big part in growing up, in shaping a person. It's there to guide the kids, not to make the choices for them, but to empower them into making these choices. "Oh I hate science so much! Yes, I am definitely not going to be a doctor, perhaps an artist?" These topics may be uninteresting to the kid, but they are there for a reason: for the kid to know that they dislike them. It is not an utter waste of time. Being presented options has the advantage of giving kids the sense of ownership and control over their own lives. "This path is not for me. Let's try another one." I'm not saying homeschooling doesn't give that; but trusting in your own choices as to what you want your kids to learn more about might be depriving them of the opportunity to discover that for themselves. On the other hand, if you allow your kid to have complete control over what he wants to learn at home, it might not turn out to be too good also. Hence, we strike a balance, and in my opinion, we see that in schools -- but of course, there are good schools, and there are bad ones. So the challenge here is to determine which are the good ones. Of course, there are also good homeschooling options. But the social interaction, which could be a preview of the real world, might be missed out on. Haba na ng sinabi ko, sorry, I just felt I needed to defend schools, because having to study things that might seem uninteresting is not necessarily a waste of time or money. Great schools know that learning doesn't end within the four walls. They won't box you in.

Noon? When im in school. I feel so insecure because im so not into competition. Like every one is so active and then me? . I was like an introvert person. And that makes me more insecure pa. Pero this days i have learned my skills. My ability. Everything. I im loving it. Maybe school has a percentage of you being who you are now. But most of it is in you going through the process of being a who you can be today.
