I also would suggest using Gabriel's list. There are many great songs and live performances. Many different styles from very heavy to very soft. What is your preferred style. I love so many songs. Some of my favorites are "Storytime", "Last Ride of the Day", & "Bless the Child". If you like it heavy guitar driven maybe "Romanticide". Take your pick.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

@@RustySabita Nightwish has already been active for more than a quarter of a century, during which time it went through significant member changes and created a real ocean of music of great diversity. For this reason, I support the idea that the reactors must realize what they are getting into in order to make correct decisions, and this is directly reflected in the quality of the reactions. My approach to present this information to all reactors may seem repetitive and impersonal, but I do it with the best intentions. Otherwise, I am an ordinary person, and the intense-optimistic energy of their music helped me overcome very difficult moments in life, which is why I am grateful to them.

@@RustySabita Search for "Floor Jansen" and "phonebook", then you will find it at RUclips. Floor is often called "Valkyrie Queen" or "Valkyrie Goddess" by her fans because she is such a strong and at the same time empathic person. You can become hooked by her voice and personality very soon - and valkyries in norse mythology collect the souls of the warriors who died in battle and bring them to Valhalla.
New sub here. I once read somewhere that Floor has lungs like a deep-sea diver. I don't know if that's really true, but I believe it!
The lead singer is called Floor Jansen. She is classically trained and has done 1 year of Opera Training. Out of her and the two previous singers, Floor is the only one to have done actual Opera which is in the song 'Shoemaker', it is beautiful.
This is one of their lighter songs in my opinion, there are definitely heavier ones you may like. I recommend 'Romanticide', 'Yours is an empty hope' and 'Noise'. ☺️

The meaning: Ghost Love Score, a story about a love that is gone, but still lingering. The writer (Tuomas, on keyboard) demands it should either be rekindled or put to rest forever. Now this could be about any romantic love of the writer had. I think, this is not case. I think, it is about the first singer of NW that announced she would leave the band, but had not left yet. This song was on her last album, together with a song called Romanticide. Romanticide is on the same theme, but very different emotions. A clear indication is the line "The Child will be born again". "The Child" in many songs is a reference/nickname to the band itself. We never get to know the real meaning of a song because his answer any questions about the meaning is "The song means, what the song means to YOU".
I guess there is some room for ambiguity or could, but the lore of the band is becoming apparent. It could make sense about the previous singer.. I have known that feeling all too well as well in the past, however. Luckily, I've found my Valkyrie queen IRL.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

Nightwish does light, medium and heavy metal. This was medium. The primary function of Floor's fan is to keep her makeup from running in the heat. The cooling effect and hair blowing are nice secondaries. 🤘😊

Hello Rusty Reactions, you just heard Floor Jansen (pronounce Yahn-Sen). Although Nightwish is Finnish, their 3rd singer is not, she is Dutch, lives with her husband Hannes van Dahl, the drummer of the band Sabaton and their two daughters in Sweden. Floor was born on Februari 21st, 1981 in Goirle the Netherlands. At the age of 16 she started her career (initially) just as the background singer from the Dutch metal band ‘After Forever’ in 1997, but real soon she took over the lead until early 2009 and the band fell apart. Parallel she studied at the Dutch Rock Academy in Tilburg starting in 1999 where she graduated in 2003 and spent two years on classical training with the National Conservatory. She studied Musical Theatre and one year Opera. She plays guitar, piano and flute and has completed 12 years of music studies. She’s a Light Lyric Soprano and her vocalrange runs from E3 to D6. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons.
On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ‘ReVamp’, which was disbanded in September 2016. In August 2010 Jansen was a guest in the TV program De tiende van Tijl. In that program she sang an aria by Puccini. From October 1, 2012 (while she was within ReVamp, but recovering from a burnout) Floor replaced Anette Olzon as the singer of Nightwish halfway their Imaginaerum World Tour. After one year (shortly after the Wacken Open Air festival concert 2013) on October 9th 2013, it was announced that she was to become the group's regular new front singer.

I am sure you'll find several songs from Nightwish that will suit your taste even better. Like Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, Weak Fantasy or Dark Chest of Wonders. But normally these appear further down reactors' lists.

On Gabriel's list he makes a note of the harder metal songs. previous posters have already mentioned some, e.g. Romanticide, Dark Chest of Wonder, Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, Weak Fantasy, Song of Myself etc. You will find their music versatile and no two songs alike. @@RustySabita, oh, talking about style: you can find classical music (2nd disk of Human Nature), Opera, Screaming/Growling, Symphonic (like this one), Jazz, Acoustic Versions, something like Musicals and combinations of all those. I think I don't like only a handful songs - given the variety they offer, that's really not much. And it's about half I absolutely adore. So it's worth checking out ALL of them. You only gave a clou in what direction you would like to go - so these were my suggestions based on that. @billmorrison8292 added some more I would agree to. I might add Seven Days to the Wolves. The only reason I am shying away from eg Romanticide and Slaying the Dreamer is their weird ending.
But I would really like to see you leaving your comfort zone.
Oh - and always prefer the live versions - except for songs of the album Human Nature. Those two disks can be heard equally or are better in studio release. But this is only a rule of thumb.
And: Save The Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth for later. Those are like musicals. Knowing Nightwish better makes them even more enjoyable.

Rusty, this is going to be quite the ride son, I'm 72 grew up with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Rush, some of the most innovative groups of all time; Nightwish ranks with the best in my opinion. Waiting/watching!
Hello RustyReactions :) The thing with Nightwish is they are extremely varied as band and if this one song might not be your cup of tea, they have much heavier songs that you might like. I hope you do go and listen to more of them, and if you do, you can't go wrong with Gabriel's list but for a more heavy metal sound from them, I'd suggest reacting to Romanticide Live at Wacken (it is on Gabriel's list).

Continuez sur le festival du Wacken Open Air 2013, vous êtes sur de ne pas vous tromper, les quinze chansons du set sont des classiques pour tous les fans du groupe et sont à écouter absolument. Vous venez d'écouter la 13ème chanson du set, ensuite faites le Ever Dream qui commence comme une douce ballade voix piano et sur un signe de Marko ( le bassiste ) continue d'accélérer pour finir comme un train à grande vitesse, puis essayez une petite histoire avec Storytime, excellent rock qui reste longtemps en tête ou alors du plus lourd avec Ghost River pour entendre le mélange des voix de Floor avec Marko ou encore plus lourd avec Romanticide..... As for your reaction style, you made some really good points but I found the constant commentary over the music a bit distracting. Best to have the odd pause to make your analysis. I thought your screen set up was really good.

You should listen to a couple of their heavier songs. If you wanna hear a little more shall we say diversity in floors, voice try yours is an empty hope live version you will hear floor do some deep growls . They have many different kinds of songs romanticide is another heavier one

I'm always astonished that all Americans have such hard time hearing the great English diction that Floor have in her delivery. She has a perfect dictionary according to the original English language here in Europe. Anyway - what the song is about we will never truly know, as Toumas Holopainen (the composer) says "For me it has a specific meaning that I am not going to reveal.”
So all the explanations about the meaning behind the song, is just speculations.
I'm not sure if you're saying I'm American, but I'm from Wales in the UK.
I guess sometimes the magic in a song is not really knowing and leaving it wrapped in speculation and symbolism. Similar to the very best movies that do it.
