My mother had vaginal mesh implanted in her. We went to dozens of hospitals to look for answers. They gave her oxycotin to deal with the pain and she died when I was 11 leaving behind four children. She had lots of surgerys to look for the reason for the pain, during one of them the surgeon left a cue tip inside of her (found in her autopsy). We couldn't sue because she had to many surgerys to be able to pin point which one caised the damage.
This is the first time I have ever heard anyone talk about vaginal mesh beyond the lawsuit commercials. Thanks for the reporting it means alot.

@Sharon Jensen I am about to get my first Mirena IUD out, because it is time for my replacement after having it in for over 5 years. I understand that there are some very risky procedures out there, but the statistics for Mirena complications show that it's a rare occurrence for a mis-insertion or the device piercing the uterine lining, and even if it does, it is reported to feel like mild bladder cramps with a simple removal operation. I just felt the need to say this, because I can't imagine living without this device. I absolutely cannot have children, as I have multiple genetic disorders that I am unwilling to pass along. The Mirena IUD is more effective at preventing pregnancy than taking both the pill and using a condom at the same time. I had an estrogen imbalance, causing crazy periods, terrible hormonal acne, dramatic mood swings, etc. Which has since been corrected by the IUD. My multiple illnesses were greatly exacerbated during my periods, and accentuated the pain to an overwhelming level. The Pill is also not an option, as it delivers approximately 90% more hormones to the body, and disperses it all over, rather than concentrating on the uterine area as the Mirena device does. I have not had a period in four years. Before, I would leave puddles of blood on my bed every night during my period, I would have to skip school and/or work because of the pain, and a tampon + a super thick pad wouldn't even be enough to hold the flow. My only side effects were a week of bladder cramps (far less severe than my periods) and a full month of very spotty bleeding, and then for the rest of that year I had a spotty period every several months, until it disappeared completely. The FDA is shitty, but that device has been thoroughly studied and is an absolute necessity for so many women. ***An absolute necessity.*** If you want to critique an IUD, let's talk about the copper one. Because THAT makes all your period symptoms far more severe, causes bladder cramps that last for the duration of possessing the device, oh, and did I mention waterfalls of blood?

A counterfeiter may have produced that product from a screen from a hardware store, sprayed plastic over it, put it in a package, and sold it on eBay to hospital purchasing agents trying to save a dime. @@userasdf That's the principle in the EU: Things (food, medical devices, whatever) may only be put on the market when it is intensively proved they are not harmful and every possible risk is eliminated or very little. In the US things are put on the market, although there could be many known risks, and only taken off again when these possible risks and critical incidents start to occur very much (speculating that the possible risks could not occur at all and then money for testing would have been "waisted"). I'm not claiming that there wouldn't be scandals in the EU, as well, of course there are, but this is a fundamental difference and the major reason while European people fought against TTIP, being afraid that American companies would sue European governments before international arbitration courts, founded by TTIP, for limiting their profit (considered as "demage") because of the intensive tests European law makes necessary.

wow, this main report really hit home for me.
i had a hip replacement 10 years ago just when they were hyping metal on metal socketed implants. at the time i specifically asked my surgeon about them, and he explained at my age having an implant with a plastic liner was better because it had a bit more "give" - that body joints are not meant to have the precision of machine parts, and how plastic mimicked the cartilage and fluid layer evolution designed into our joints naturally. what was shocking to me now in retrospect is; at the time all the online hype had been manipulated to favor metal on metal, so clearly that company was paying someone to do a social media managed campaign.
one of the arguments they used was metal on metal would last longer because there was no plastic liner to wear out - again my surgeon talked me down by pointing out two things; i was not a very active person nor had plans to become one, thus the plastic liner wearing out prematurely would be less likely, and second that plastic liners were a known commodity (with materials used improving over the years) that had been applied over the past 30 years, so it would be better that i had another hip replacement 30 years from now (it's a far less invasive procedure with faster recovery time - than it was a few decades ago), then take a chance on a new metal on metal design with no long term track record.
yeah, i know... boy was i lucky i had this surgeon at that hospital, instead of some hack who made his fortune in medical device kick backs. i was long aware of the fda cleared versus approved distinction, because since college i had known to avoid penny stocks that had "invented" and marketing fda cleared gimmicks and ignore late night cabletv commercials advocating fda cleared well-being and exercise devices, many that were based on fda approved inventions from over 50 years ago. however it truly never had even occurred to me that any such products were also being used internally.

Had a gyno push me into using an IUD, had pain from the moment it was implanted and my gyno just kept telling me it would go away as I got used to it. 2 years later had a new urogyno who gladly removed it and found it was implanted without showing so in imaging.
He told me he denies implanting all IUDs and removes 5-10 a month surgically. When I told him the pressure put on me to use it, he got my old gynos license pulled.
My IUD was simply pulled out, I couldn't imagine it being implanted so deep to need surgery with the amount of pain mine caused.

Amen! IUD's often cause SO many complications including just pain, and it's for sure more common than acknowledged by the industry. there is a reddit threat with thousands of comments about it. Some women have had PTSD from their IUD, from the pain of just the insertion and they actually had to go to therapy for it! Gynos keep pressuring women to get IUD's too and people talk about that in the reddit thread too. It's so unethical! We shouldn't be pressured! And we should be real about the complications! Clearly doctors aren't informed enough about devices as this video shows. And some doctors don't like IUDs because they say they remove more than they insert. www.reddit.com/r/TwoXChromosomes/comments/kfakaa/we_need_to_quit_acting_like_iuds_and_birth/

She had another hip replacement to replace that one, but she still has pain in her hips and it still hurts for her to walk. Yes, it was DePuy. We're still waiting for the lawsuit to be settled so that we can be compensated. Thanks for reporting on this!

Metal rods saved my life when I had them implanted on my spine when I was 12. First, the surgery very nearly killed me. Second, the rods detached from my spine a year and a half later and poked through my back, and I had to have part of each rod removed. Lastly, in large part because of these complications, I've had debilitating chronic back pain every day since I was 16...coming up on 20 years now. I'm still alive, but my life is DEFINITELY not worth everything I've been through. Think long and hard (if you can) before getting implants. I can't have my rods removed now because the bone of my spine has grown around what remains fused to my spine. If you can survive and have a decent life without the implant, don't get it. If you can't, do tons of research before getting it implanted. Be safe.

And again I am more than happy that I live in Germany. When I triple-broke my ankle at a working accident, I got titan screws in it. Well, walking with those screws in my ankle with my tendons rubbing over the top of those sometimes hurt, but I got them out after the prescribed 12 month. It healed good and I still have those screws to remind me that working safe is more important than working fast. (I didn't had to pay for any of this because here it's reqiured by law that you have a health insurance.)

Mr. Oliver thank you so much for breaking the silence on the botched Medical Device industry horrors. There are massive coverups and harassment programs that involve courts and police to keep this knowledge from the public. Many employees are under extra legal harassment, threats of litigation and criminal persecution for trying to protect patients. For example, those hip replacements by Depuy Synthes J&J, a client of a very shady consulting company, British Cambridge Consultants(snapped up by French Altran after former parent's Arthur D Little exec's got caught embezzling in the Enron era). Ongoing problems with titanium hips it are being covered up by the corrupt Boston courts and police who interfered with court hearings to protect Cambridge Consultants executives from having to perjure themselves in court. While railroading whistleblowers who spoke out about safety issues and were systematically retaliated by managers, then HR, then courts, then cops. There are serious questions about Depuys titanium hip implant strain sensor biocompatibility and efficacy that engineers were too frightened to speak about. Insulins injector studies compromised? Following this, Medrobotics fired a former CC engineer who forced them to invest in years of development to ensure patient safety over quick bucks for a throat-snake robot. (CC relayed threats to sue Medrobotics for "poaching" if this former CC engineer does not stop speaking about toxic CC retaliatory culture).
Citizens Arrest for David Bradshaw, general manager of Cambridge Consultants for perjury and conspiracy to obstruct justice! Bradshaws lie, patients die. If these Boston courts covered up Vatican's crimes against the most vulnerable, what's a few abused engineers? We swear an oath to protect public safety and wear an Iron Ring made from a collapsed bridge's girders as a reminder. On ides of March in 2018 a bridge collapsed in Florida just as they were railroading engineers in Boston. Frightened calls from project engineers warning of structural problems were briefly played on the news. And yes, when Boeng turned into a money factory, some bright exec thought an if statement can correct a stalling 737. How many whistleblowers did Boeng supress? Unite to Fight the corporate blight. I'd gotten essure done about ten years ago. It was wonderful, and I was beyond thrilled. My super heavy and long periods were suddenly significantly lighter to the point of being negligible and way shorter. Around seven years later, all of a sudden, I was getting sharp pains in my abdomen, and my periods started getting heavy again, but at least they didn't last much longer. I started google searching to see what could be wrong (ugh, I know, terrible idea), and found a Facebook group about all the problems with Essure. I had no idea that it had been recalled, and assumed that it was a fake, overly sensational group. But, I kept reading what other women were saying. Almost all of them were expressing the same symptoms I had, and they'd gotten it around the same time I had. Some had even gotten pregnant while still having the device in them! I haven't had any other issues (that I know of), but I often wonder what could be wrong that I don't know about, and am slightly appalled that I had to find out via a Facebook group.

@tacodias: good rule of thumb. The approval process in the EU used to be different from the US. The thinking behind a '510k' clause is typical American. Let the companies settle with the consumer later if something went wrong. In the EU, the authorities wanted to prevent harm coming to the consumer in the first place, in the US private entities sue each other instead and this process is a substitute for government oversight. Unfortunately, the EU shifted to the US model in recent decades.

The trouble is most countries look to the FDA for their initial guidance on device clearance/approval. Fortunately, most other civilized countries eventually pull their heads out of medical device maker's backsides and ban the sale and use of dangerous devices. Take pelvic mesh, which is being called the largest medical disaster in women's health since Thalidomide in the rest of the world. The AU has even issued an official apology to women for not protecting them. The FDA? All of the pelvic meshes are STILL on the market except for mesh placed vaginally for pelvic organ prolapse. That is the ONLY one of the meshes the FDA required companies to stop selling because there wasn't enough safety data to warrant it's continued use . . . nearly 18 years after it was brought to market.

Shawn Johnson Well, if the parachute doesn’t work you’ll die, so of course you can’t complain about it. Frightening when you think about it

This episode was pretty much a recap of the Netflix documentary The Bleeding Edge, which they actually show footage of here. But John omitted a few of the craziest stories from that documentary, one being a doctor with a hip replacement and the women who suffered because of the mesh implant.

This was great! My son relies on a medical device to live, its failed 10 times and he has had to have ten brain surgeries by age 11. Thanks for the informative yet entertaining video👍

I was seventeen and poor, and they didn't bother to tell me or my Mom the risks of the hernia mesh. It's more than a decade later and it's frankly more painful than the hernia on many days. I have no options now, because I can't afford corrective surgery and recovery downtime.
I watched this in tears because no one else talks about these things but hopefully it means someone else will have better access and awareness before consenting to a medical device surgery for themselves or their family.
I hope that the staff behind these segments know they're doing more important work than many "legitimate" news outlets that often gloss over or quickly move on to other stories when it means shining a light on the conglomerates that make billions from hurting and killing people without remorse.

As someone who has an Essure horror story, I was appalled by how much the issues had been buried. And because it couldn't be safely removed I was forced to have a complete hysterectomy before the age of 35. You would think that would help, but the metals from the device have caused chronic autoimmune issues that will be a problem for the rest of my life.

I was taught a saying by one of my pain management nurse: "If you are sick long enough, you become half a doctor." Unfortunately, that's true. I've had to do my own research and advocate for treatment *constantly* just to get a diagnostic test done. (Spoiler alert: they still can't answer my questions about the reason I suffer unending chronic pain.)
NEVER trust a doctor at their word, especially if they only present you with one option. The only way you're going to have progress in your health treatment is if you're doing everything to find your own options.
Or money. They'll bend into pretzels for you if there's money crossing their hands.
