  • Georgia Ede discussed during our Heart to Heart 3-Day Virtual Lipedema Event Conference -- The Science of Hope: A New Dietary Approach to Mental Health Problems. She is a Harvard-trained, board-certified psychiatrist specializing in nutritional and metabolic psychiatry. Her passion is empowering people with psychiatric conditions to reduce or eliminate the need for medications by changing how they eat.
Her current work is about discovering which changes are worth making and why. Dr. Ede co-authored the first inpatient study of the ketogenic diet for treatment-resistant mental illness, developed the first medically accredited course in ketogenic diets for mental health practitioners, and was honored to be named a recipient of the Baszucki Brain Research Fund's First Annual Metabolic Mind Award. Her new book, Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind, was released this year.
In this video, Dr. Ede honestly expressed that she doesn't know much about lipedema but in this topic, she clearly explained that more than half of people with lipedema, at least according to one study, are suffering from depression symptoms.
And that certainly makes sense, especially since lipedema has a major inflammatory component, and inflammation is a big contributor to depression. If you have inflammation in the body, it's very often that you will also have inflammation in the brain as well, even though you can't see it or feel it happening, because the brain doesn't have any nerve endings and you can't see through your skull, so you can't see if it's red or swollen or sore. But when we have inflammation in the body, we will often also have inflammation in the brain.
