Some people hate when you play cheap guitars through expensive Amps because it proves what I've always known. Great tone is more about the amp and a lot less about the guitar. I started playing in 1976 with a cheap guitar and an old Fender tube amp that belonged to my dad. Anything we plugged in to that amp sounded good.😮
Well, it looks good. The dings on the back suck, but they're on the back. Only a matter of time before a belt buckle could've done that. For $120, you're on your way on the path of many before you. Soon you can cut your own way.
For those of us who can fix the funcitonal problems, it would be better to find an old strat-like guitar (Yammy EG, Crate Electra, etc etc) for $50, and go from there. You'll find some that have a wonderful real Strat-like body and rolled necks, upgraded tuners, and some impressive 70's dirty sounding pickups. I love finding them, making them sweet, and then handing them off to kids to learn.
“If you don’t have time to watch more than one RUclips video today, don’t watch this one.” 🤣🤣🤣dead pan delivery has me cracking up. I subscribed. Comedy 😅 Trem-a-lolo 😂
"Not a modder"... I'd mod it. I'd mod it so hard. A guitar like that just screams to be modded. At that price, you could learn how to replace frets and all other maintenance without worrying about destroying the guitar... either you destroy the guitar, or make it 1000x better. Either way you learn what to do and what not to do. If you mess up and destroy the guitar, you're not out much. If you're successful, then you got a good guitar that didn't cost an arm and a leg (unless you had a mishap while working on the guitar).
Exactly what I was thinking. I sold my fender strat because I was tight on money and I regret it every day. I’m thinking maybe I grab one of these and mod it to be like my old strat hehe
My Gearit Strat was $131C. No QC issues, beautiful finish, rounded and smooth fret ends, straight maple neck, tone and volume controls that actually work, steady sound, ok gig bag, extra strings, tuner, decent cable and a fun little amp with blue tooth. Totally surprised by how decent it is. Fender May be making an attempt to stay in the “value” segment but too little too late.
@batglide5484 so Obama and Biden are solely responsible for prices going up? Y'all need to learn prices are affected by the economy. For four years the supply Chains were very much affected by covid. Covid drove prices up cause of demand and greedy CEOS.
I got mine in sun burst for learning to mod. I really like it, I changed the strings and blocked the trem. Very comfortable, fun to play. Oh, and I didn't watch the video to the end to hear the two things. Thank you Landon, as always.
I actually landed after many sub 600 guitars on cheapest JET stratocaster and it is perfect. Feeling, setup, rounded edges, no issues at all. I might say its the best price / performance ratio guitar.
I got "Legendary" Bullet Mustang, added a Tusk Nut, shielding paint, gentle neck sanding w/gun oil wipe, and very basic set up for about $130 total. Great guitar. You can do a lot with a little with a Squier.
Smashing video, those squiers are excellent value and are real easy to play. Guitar snobs will disagree of course but as you've shown they are a great way to learn guitar.
Great review, Landon. Thank you for this. Your low-key demeanor and dead-pan humor make this all feel really honest and worthwhile. Nice to see you talk about the pros and cons--that you like the ceramic pickups but also address those shitty grooves on the back of the body. For $120 (American) it's a tough choice, I imagine.
Place a piece of damp cloth over the ding then use a hot solder iron on the cloth. This will raise the wood fiber so that ding is almost unnoticeable. At tip of a hot clothing iron may also work. This for where the wood fibers aren't broken too bad.
Thanks for the review. I've seen many demos of this guitar and most of the players with negative reviews seem to expect the guitar to magically play for them. They can't play unless the frets are a certain size, the tremolo feels a certain way, gobs of distortion, they need to mod it, etc, etc. The sound is mostly in your hands; YOU play the guitar the guitar does not play you. I ordered one of these in sunburst a month or so ago and it's a wonderful guitar. In my 60's and play mostly straight ahead jazz with big arch-tops and I also own a Fender Telecaster, and a Gibson 335. I wanted a new toy just to goof around with and this fit the bill. I put a set of 10's on it and it sounds great clean or with my MXR Super Badass Distortion. The neck feels great too, not sharp edges at all. Some guitars will have defects no matter how much you pay for it, the same applies here. If you sweat the small stuff send it back.
I bought an Amazon Squier a couple of years ago. When I got it, I cut the strings, took off the neck and sanded it to a matte finish, polished the frets, restrung, spent a bit of a time cutting the nut to the right depth, and intonated it. For the price it was an absolutely amazing player. The ceramic PUP's had a nice growly P90ish sound. Sure it lacked a little in the way of dynamics, but I loved it and actually played it more than my CS Strat. Sadly, my great-nephew really wanted to learn guitar, so it's now collecting dust at his house. I'm hoping by having access, he'll eventually get lessons. He won't listen to me 😂
Besides all the jokes, squiers when they get set up properly are great for beginners. Bonus points if you got HSS and a nice finish. Then you can play anything on it as long as it isnt using all 24 frets, cause strats only have 21 frets.
I like this video because you are reviewing the guitar for what it is and not expecting it to be concert ready, etc. It is a perfect guitar for a beginner. A salesperson at Guitar Center told me that Indian Laurel was related to rosewood. No so much helpful as it is me just contributing a comment. 'Cause the guy lied. 🙂
Not a related wood, but on the hardness scale they are nearly identical, 2.4 for rosewood and 2.3 for Laurel, and that’s all that should really matter.
Great video🎉 I love your RUclips channel, Andy's is pretty good too! I went to a pawn shop and bought a used Squire Stratocaster "Bullet" for 40 bucks. I know they're doing the best they can to keep the prices low for beginners, but I think I got a better deal.
I just bought me a Harmony EST 1892 ( they were sold through the JC Penny’s Department Store’s catalog) just like SEAR’s cheap guitar. But you can play it after adjusting it
The bridge is set tight for the guitar to behave as a hardtail: this is the proper setting for a beginner who will be busy learning other things first. I wonder why so many reviewers act as if they didn't know it's a set-up choice. Maybe they don't.
I guess it’s tough because yeah, manufacturers have been trying to find that perfect guitar that simultaneously inspires a new player, fan, and future loyal customer, while also preventing people who are gonna play for a week from buying the decent/good stuff and then selling it second at crazy prices to get rid of it. So I’m glad they’re trying, and that this is a guitar someone wouldn’t hate to own, but probably wouldn’t buy it for my kid.

I’m glad you mentioned the ceramic pickups. I think they sounded really raw and powerful. Not vintage at all, but I don’t get why that makes them “bad,” they’re just different.
I bought the very same guitar and first thing I did (beside changing the strings) was to put some noiseless alnico 5s in it. I didn't even give the old pups a chance.
I have the same one. It's black now though. And modded. My biggest complaint with mine was how cheap and light the trem block is. It's the lightest one I've ever had. Immediately swapped it.
I got a squier affinity telecaster for $239 CAD even the guy at Long and McQuade wasn't sure why it was marked as a demo but I ain't complaining. I'm a big fan of random local deals.
I got just the pick guard that I wanted on a Black Strat- 2020 Squier Affinity that seemed and probably was the only one available during Covid-19 and it gets its mod from my doing a total setup on a great neck (couldn’t be better) although the frets could be harder for the future, Yosemite pups and voila not quite instant Strat I could afford over a period of time. Love this axe. If pros can play straight Bullets I can play a modded Affinity. : )

Great information!! Thanks for all the videos you bring us. The guitar is pretty cool. Put the loaded pick guard and give us a demo.Keep on playing , we'll keep on watching!!
How do you get rid of this shit buzz on the guitar. Is it my cable? Whenever I adjust the tone it helps reduce the static but it still doesn’t sound good when recording. I heard it in yours to. Is it just because it’s cheap?
When I first saw this guitar on Amazon I thought wow I can sell my Donner DST-200 That I got from Amazon for $109 and use the money to buy the Fender. But after watching a lot of reviews on it I'm going to keep the Donner. I know your Amp can make or break a guitar but I'm just not impressed with the sound and to me the pic ups sound weak. Wow Landon excellent!😊
Thanks! 😃
Thanks for the video, this guitar is better than the one I learned on hands down! Yes I to like the sound of ceramic pups. I even like the color
Gosh, what a pain to have something shipped into Canada. So many fees and taxes along the way, sorry you gotta endure that. Thanks for making and sharing this video!
Ooooo a Princeton. That’s a good amp. My brother in law has his from the 80’s. I wanted one so bad but I ended up with a vox ac15. I got a smokin deal on it. And I do like it.
I like the color and I may get one to mod.
@@tomisham9900 i just ordered one in red , I’m a beginner so I’ll be keeping mine stock
Hey it's a Squire, er.... Squier, not too shabby. Thanks for another pleasant viewing experience. That one last bit was stellar, I mean, who doesn't like that sound. I actually picked up my Nashville Tele and laid down a tune to it, oh my, please don't ask me to send it along. 🎼🎶, I kind of like the name I gave it, A Wrinkle in Time. Please, forgive me.
I have the same hat except...mine has a bigger logo. Yes, I went there. Logo measuring contest
Could you tell me if the action is low enough-and comfortable to play? I have arthritis. Thanks, Peter.
It was for me, but that’s a personal preference
If you take it to a professional to set it up I’m sure they can get it pretty low for you
Landon. Great response to those haters that don't have a life. Gave me a good chuckle. Sweet. Cheers from a fellow Canuck
The dents on the back are intentional, that’s how much relic’ing you get for $119. Also, did you throw away the trem cover?
It's fine
Great information!! Thanks for all the videos you bring us. The guitar is pretty cool. Put the loaded pick guard and give us a demo.Keep on playing , we'll keep on watching!!
I heard a youtuber describe the red Debut as "ketchup red" which I think is spot on
How do you get rid of this shit buzz on the guitar. Is it my cable? Whenever I adjust the tone it helps reduce the static but it still doesn’t sound good when recording. I heard it in yours to. Is it just because it’s cheap?
could be interference from other electronics. hard to say
Love your humour!😊
Question for giging guitarists, would you gig with that guitar?
Nice video...
sounded really good with the sd-1. love dakota red too.
Let me ask. If you would want a woody sound from your pickups, would you make them with wood?
If you choose to use your vibrato bar, the bridge being decked has 0% chance of staying in tune. Float it to use it.
How is the playability of the guitar, the action is very important over value
it's great! setup is fine
I love this channel!😂
Like you said: It's _reliced!_ IMA get a black one 🎸 Thanks, mate!
I bought one yesterday for $122 , delivery on Tuesday, i got the tobacco burst .
as a canadian i appreciate the conversion.
Holy cow your American Strat is a beast.
Thanks for the Video 🙏
You got the Punk Rock version.
A whopping 12k views go Landon!
Are these B stock or something? 🎸
All in all it was a good review. Thanks for posting
