Cleaning Antique Dug Bottles With A Bottle Machine

- I did this video to show how bottles can be cleaned with a machine. It is commonly called tumbling bottles. That is not a very accurate term, rocks are tumbled to polish
them, the bottles are not actually tumbled. They are rotated at high speeds with polishing
compounds to clean them. I am showing the basic way it is done, it takes practice
to learn some things concerned with polishing the bottles.
I think the metallic residue you are talking about is what we call stain.
When bottles are buried in soil for many years the glass breaks down.
Not sure what the exact chemical process is but that film or stain is
what is left on the surface. Polishing with a macine will remove it.
Thanks
Ron
Wow I need one of these ! We've got so many very cool and very old bottles that I've dug over the past few years from old railroad track dump sites to old farm(house) locations and it's such a tedious task washing them all by hand and they never quite look this good !
That’s superb! Do you have to make the framework yourself?
Wayne Lowery known as the Jar Doctor makes a great machine, check his
web site. The wire is cut from single strands. He makes two sizes. Wayne cuts the copper and sells it. Wayne has all the polishing powders and all
the stuff you need to clean bottles.
Thanks
Ron
Hi Ronnie, It's Barry Kenner an old friend of Jerry's. I met you many years ago in New Jersey. Hope all is well and Happy Holidays.
wow that brown bottle came out sooo nice.
Hello Ronnie, great channel! I have collected bottles (and other treasures) my entire life. Just one question. What is the metallic looking residue that you see on some bottles. It's a metallic film that glistens and refracts light? It seems to be some sort of chemical contamination and I've often wondered what's happening.
How does this work with bottles that aren't circular? Is it possible to achieve the same results?
Interesting, informative and enjoyable.
very good machine.
Nice video I am your 10th subscriber
Do you have a website?where can i get the tumbler machine and polishing powder?
Ron I do not have one of these machines but I have lots of bottles so that I'd be willing to donate to the cause
Hi. Ronnie...Is the copper just reguler copper wire cut into small pieces? thanks...
HI there, how much would it cost to have a old bottle cleand? as I have two rare codd bottles that need cleaning regards ben
Thanks, Ron. I've been thinking about asking you for this information again. I have some questions that you will probably get from people watching this video. Where can I get one of the machines?, Is the copper wire cut from small, multiwire copper wire or larger single starnd chunks? Where do I get the copper?, What do I call it, and where do I get the right polishing compound? Thanks, again, I really enjoyed seeing this video. Skip

What gauge is the copper wire cuts? I have a lot of wire in different gauges laying around I could cut up. I collect and have found sooooo many bottles and want to begin restoring them as a hobby. I"ll check the Jar Doctor site you recommended to Mr. McKail.
Wow that is sweet, nice job!! Can I send you some bottles for cleaning?
I had been wanting to do the video for sometime. I thought a lot of people did not understand the basic way the machines work and I really do like to share things I have learned though a lot of trial and error.
Thanks for the nice comments.
Ron
geeez that did a great job cleanin them bottle aye
where could someone buy one of them from?
Ronnie is there a reason you use a finer grit for the interior tumble rather than the same grit for both inside and out?
I have changed the grit since I did this video about 5 years ago. A lot of bottles I use 1500 grit on inside and outside.
I want one of these machines! where do i get 1?
Any thoughts on frosting glass bottles? I have a 3 cubic foot vibratory tumbler and tried tumbling some with aluminum oxide but they did not frost evenly.
Ronnie, where did you get those tubes from that you put the bottles in?
I don't clean bottles for othe people except a few relatives and friends but
quite a few people may a business of cleaning bottles. I think prices can vary from about $12 to in the $20 range. Some bottles are a pain to clean and
each one can be different. Google bottle cleaning, you can find people who clean them. Thanks Ron
what is the powder used?
any particular size diameter of the copper shot?
Wayne Lowery who is known as the Jar Doctor makes a great machine and
sells all the supplies to make it work. Google his web site at the Jar Doctor,
should have his number there.
How much compound are you using on the inside and the outside?
According to size of bottle. 8oz bottle 3/4 tea inside and 1-1/2 tea outside. Pint bottle 1 tea inside and 2 outside. Quart 1-1/2 inside and 2-1/2 outside. 1/2 gallon 2 inside and 3 outside.
Thanks,appreciate
I wish that you was living close to my town I would bring you some bottles and pay you to clean them.
If only one or a few bottles that need to be cleaned, you can also use household rubbing alcohol and if you want to be extra good to the environment so you can also use about 80% water by 10% salt and 10% Lemon concentrate it is also very good...
Google " The Jar Doctor" who is Wayne Lowery. He has everthing you
need to clean the bottles.
Google " The Jar Doctor" who is Wayne Lowery. He has all the stuff you need for cleaning. His site will give you an idea what all the materials cost.
I think he will ship to other countries. Good luck.
Ron
Yes it is. He cuts it at some angles to help the cutting process but just copper wire cut up will work.
I am not sure of the exact gauge of the wire. Check the jar Doctor's site. He may have the size listed.
