Thanks again Jon. I definitely love your way to teach games by explaining rules during playing, really a brilliant idea ! A little bit longer that's sure, but so better for understanding. Continue to enjoy us with your playthrough 🥰
Your playthroughs are getting better and better. You really are the best on RUclips at this. Excellent way to learn the game. Keep up the great work. This definitely helped me to decide to back the TMG campaign.
I think the x2 bonus for Tax Collector works slightly different. Rules say: "If the player chooses a regular tax collector action, he receives the same amount of coins a SECOND". So, lets say you have x2 bonus twice, then you get 4+4+4=12 (or 8+8+8=24) money instead of 4x2x2=16 (or 8x2x2=32).
jagga68 hmm That is a really good catch. It does look like I misunderstood the tax collector multipliers, which definitely changes how the Blue player would have gone about their strategy unfortunately. I’ll add corrective notes later, thanks for pointing this out!
Right up to now, there are a lot of folks doing boardgame reviews (really, the greatest of times for us boardgamers!). What i enjoy about yours, is that you have a balanced approach between teaching the rules and showing real examples as you play the games (and taking the time to explain the rationale of some of your decisions). Plus, you usually do not criticise or complain about the game design, which for me detracts the whole purpose of teaching. Keep up the great work!
At 16:22, you say that you only have two spaces left, so you can't take a card because that action only has 2-hourglass tiles left. I'm not saying it's a good move, but could you squish the two hourglasses together so that you can still play your card? One space would be for the action tile, and the other for two hourglasses, right?
Awesome job Jon! About hometown modifier ability when you peform a Philosopher action: Supposing I pay 8 to train 2 of my population (2 types of population 1 time each or 1 type of population 2x). If I use the hometown modifier, I could: A) 3 types of population 1 time each? B) 2 types of population (train 1 type 1x and 2 types 2x)? C) 1 type of population 3x? And if I have more bonuses from the cards, is the bonus cumulative?
Hi Jon! Excellent job as always! I did catch one thing however that did not appear to be noted yet. On the green players turn starting at 1:25:31 they never actually pay the 4 money for the hometown philosopher action. The turn before they did the taxation action getting them to 6 money and at then end of turn 5 they still have the 6 money during the decline phase.
At 1:02:25 you say you don't have enough money to do a Philosopher action, but the previous round you played a card at 46:50 that let you spend as much as you want when taking a philosopher action.
Hey Jon, while I´m not that interested in this game I just wanted to say that your organised approach is highly appreciated. I may not agree with all your points all the time but you give such a rounded view of a game, especially when it comes to points one might not like. Some reviewers tend to either rave about a game or critisice it in a very personal manner. Others focus on the entertainment and sprincle their viewpoints somewhere in between. This has it´s merits. Because I got burned though, and on other instances found the critice to be somewhat weak and/or obstruse, I allways look out for your coverage. THX and keep pushing on
William Millar dang, good catch! Fortunately they had a temple cube they could have used instead, so this error would have only affected their final score by 1vp. My brain was getting pretty mixed up near the end trying to remember everyone’s population manipulation plans and it looks like this slipped through. I’ll add a note, thanks for pointing this out!
Good catch Jason! It does look like I just slid that token down and accidentally forgot to flip it. I've added corrective subtitles, thanks for pointing it out :)
Thanks, glad you've been enjoying them :) Unfortunately I think there is no chance of a Dojo Kun playthrough because after one play I really disliked the game and haven't actually seen a copy in the wild since that BGGcon anyway.
After two plays I can say that I have enjoyed the game quite abit though I wouldn't say that I've been blown away. It's a simpler game than I expected going in which isn't a bad thing, in fact it means it played quicker than I expected as well. If I'm being honest, I've been wondering if I should buy the KS delux version too and then sell my 1st edition, so I am in a similar boat to you right now :P
@@jerrybaker9110 Are you talking about the game show at the end of the con? I think that was my first year going to the game show, it was a good time :)
Would be nice if your videos weren't sped up. Makes it harder to understand what you are saying or to follow along. When the video is slowed down to X0.75, you sound normal and your hand movements are normal. Unfortunately you'd respond as "im just a fast talker". We know your videos are sped up. Others i've talked to say the same.
I don’t know why you’d think I’d lie about it. 95% of the video is not sped up. Occasionally I speed up the video part of tiny sections when I flub the audio and my correction is shorter than the original. So for a couple seconds my hands might move faster due to being sped up, but that’s just to try and match the new normal speed audio. I’ve literally never sped up my audio in any video. I’ve actually tried a couple times while editing a section to match my hands when I re-record a fix that’s timed off, and even slightly speeding up (to 105%) puts in wierd audio artifacts so I’ve just re-recorded those bits instead. The flip side of this is I honestly don’t know how many people can talk so slowly in their videos, I watch all RUclips at 2x to get it closer to my normal.
This game is delivering today and there is no better series of videos to learn how to play games. Thanks for all of your hard work.

@33:35. You also have the option to use the cheap philosopher action from your card. In fact, letting it go unused in a round is very sub-optimal.

@29:35. With the "virtual" merchant from one of your cards, you actually have 2 merchants.
@32:30. With the $8 tile, they can also take the first 3 cards.
Thanks for the notes!
Thanks so much for this play through. Such a big help in learning the game.

I had dismissed Gentes (for reasons I don't remember), your excellent gameplay just made me order it :)
Thank you Jon.

I'm really sorry, but it's been so long since I've played that I don't recall the rules enough to give you good answers here :-\

at 1:07:10 you only have one noble not the 2 required for the card!

Do permanent workers count toward the 18?
I don't believe so since they are called "virtual" workers in the rules I think they just count towards prerequisites.
Great video as always. I have watched almost every video in the past month. Any chance you will do a full playthrough of Dojo Kun?

Thinking about backing the deluxe version on Kickstarter. What are your overall thoughts on the game? Is this worth a purchase?

JonGetsGames were you planning on doing a full review for Gentes?
I'd like to, but it won't happen before the KS campaign ends.
Do you really get games jon?? Like really?? Do you?
Yep, I get between 5 and 15 new ones each month :)
