Fascinated to hear about your days as a jockey. Did you get to race, or meet some of the top jockeys at the time ?

Unfortunately I did not get to race. I went home on leave and my parents beg me not to go back because I came from a family of nine children so were very poor. I ended up working in a dreadful factory earning £5 a week which in today’s term would be worth £88, so it fed the family for a few days. It broke my heart. Something I have never got over, also when I went back to the stable after my first leave they had something called an initiation process which I cannot tell you about. This is another reason I did not go back because I thought perhaps they would do it to me again.
