I had the priviledge of doing outfitting work on all 3 vessels... the corp. I worked for was MSC out of Hood River... it was good work and wonderful experience for the year and a half I was employed with MSC. Keep up the good work America !!!!
I worked at Marinette Marine for 42 years and was involved in more launches than I could count . There is a hole 450 feet long by 80 feet wide and 50 feet deep carved out of the river bottom that the ship launches into .The Menominee River in that area is about 20 feet deep more or less , depending on the levels of the great lakes . I did see a video of a side launch where the ship went upside down .I think it was in Italy .
"Spirit Of America" was not delivered until 9/16/05 and originally intended to enter service on October 25, 2005 (the centennial of the municipal Staten Island ferry service), but delayed to April 4, 2006 due to technical and legal issues. I can't understand the long time from launch to delivery (nine months). The builder plate inside "Spirit Of America" has a 2005 build date (despite completed by 12/18/04 launch).
The ferry in the video that was launched (Spirit Of America) and it's sister ships, Sen. John J. Marchi and the Guy V. Molinari were all made from the scraps they saved from the Twin Towers.
I red that this ferry boat were dedicated to the victims of 911 and also part of the metal of the world Trade Center was use to assembled this boat! U usually traveled in this boat every single weekend I love it
wouldve been awesomely cool to be on the boat DURING the launching tho XDD LOL! Hope they allow cars on again soon :/ those were always fun and romantic XD
@DFDalton1962 We used to have great active shipbuilding facilities in NYC (e.g., Brooklyn Navy Yard), but we don't really have these things anymore--just repair facilities
As along as stability calculation calculated properly and side launching calculation also calculated correctly the ship will be afloat safely except damage stability.
If a ship is badly built, it'll roll over anyway, even if you launch it perpendicularly. See "principessa jolanda" as an example. Side launches are perfectly safe and take much less space to do, so long as the ship is built solid.
Actually this is the dutch method of launching ship I believe, but its is ofter done by many other people, as in the video its being done by Americans. IMO, this way is MUCH more interesting than watching is slide backwards off the drydock
@KeMoniito She didn't actuly mention the builders, she said "Bless the Men and Women that sail on her", and I am sure many women will sail on it. But I see where your coming from, usually it is said "Bless all who sail in/on her". Plus I am sure that the ship building company employes Women, so they contributed, even if indirectly.
The Spirit of America I'd a brand new ship but it was designed to keep to the traditional look of the previous ferries. It runs along side with 7 other ships that look much like it. The other ships were made any where from the 1960s to the 2000
+DLSea's Watercooler SURE BUT......its free for us.......and not even me..I live at the beach in Calif but would love to be a New Yorker and enjoy this........I am very jealous.
Hard to believe those ferry rides are still free.
Yes I was there a few days ago and it's free rides

Somewhere inside the ship on a lonely, Isolated table, The captains tea just spilled.
Not necessarily. I'm from the Midwest, but I got out to NJ/NYC back in August. I rode the Staten Island Ferry. Greatest ride of my life!!!!!!!

Very cool. Thanks!
god bless this boat..
@MADSEEN2009 the company that constructed this vessel is in marinette Wisconsin, on the border between WI and Michigan... not on the Hudson.

Nope
0:46 Long cigarette :D

Awesome 👌
Its so cool to watch the ships drop in the drink!!, ck out my other launchings, Russ
wow that was pretty cool :-))
wouldve been awesomely cool to be on the boat DURING the launching tho XDD LOL!
Hope they allow cars on again soon :/ those were always fun and romantic XD
I can't believe that a little bottle knocks a ship into the water. That person must be like super strong.
@DFDalton1962

for a sec i thought that the boat was going to go under lol
i'm from staten island and i do miss it from time to time. i may be visiting soon.
That's nuts how it looks so close to tipping over.
Hermoso!
If a ship is badly built, it'll roll over anyway, even if you launch it perpendicularly. See "principessa jolanda" as an example.
Side launches are perfectly safe and take much less space to do, so long as the ship is built solid.
it's hard to belive that there aren't many accidents with this method of launching
If the ships can’t stand a side launch, they’ve got no business in the water.
Holy shit that tilt was scary as hell.
i'd looove to be at the stern when it hits the water hahaha
didnt know they launched ships like that and too thought it was gonna tip! XD
wow....well cool...looks like its gonna tip....excellent...
gotta love Staten Island, eh?
Question: When they strike the ship with the bottle is that what makes it go in or is that just for show? I like the old JFK ferry much better.
Wow! They dropped it like it was hot.
side ways ship launches always scare me, i'm always afraid the thing will roll over lol
god i for it was going to tip ! nice video
Actually this is the dutch method of launching ship I believe, but its is ofter done by many other people, as in the video its being done by Americans. IMO, this way is MUCH more interesting than watching is slide backwards off the drydock
it happened in Italy !
i didnt know throwing a ship into the water was a way to launch it lol thought it was gonna tip too
Khiếp !!!
spirit of America is best boat in Staten island ferry fleet right now. but its just me.
The Kennedy is the most reliable and safest (and preferred by crews) in a published article (and is a passenger favorite with the outdoor deck).
@sjtom57 Why do they think charge so much to go over the Verrazano ?? LOL
@KeMoniito She didn't actuly mention the builders, she said "Bless the Men and Women that sail on her", and I am sure many women will sail on it. But I see where your coming from, usually it is said "Bless all who sail in/on her".

SI chicks are like the SI Ferry because everyone gets a ride.
does anyone know if there are people on the ship when it launches? shyt would be crazy when it hit the water
Now its Big Apple Two
Its just the ceremonial symbol to "let her go!!!"
ok.. but one thing that was crazy just slideing it into the water
Don't know why they chose that color; all I can tell you is I grew up in NYC and Staten Island Ferryboats have been orange since I was a kid.
there weren't crew on it were there? im just wondering...seasick mucho lol
me too
Angelina from Jersey Shore
hahaa, same here!
i watched one today, (only on youtube) and i was like, wtf?
I thought that the ferry was going to be sunk
It looked like the boat was going to tip over
that would have been mad funy if it rolled over
Actually there are a few differente ways of launching a ship. This is just one of them, also done in britain.
@UKPatriotsFan I'm not lying, i was hoping that :)
@joshua1954 U SURE DID BUDDY
I thought it was going to fall LMAO
0:28 *BING* YOUVE GOT FAIL
look how long that dudes smoke is at 0:47!
is this a bad launching ?
id love to be in side the comand center inside that ship when it wwent in the water!
This is really neat, but I thought the ferry is really old? :O somebody please correct me on that
Idk Either.I Lived In New York City For 7 Years And I Don't Even Know.My Grandpa Said It Came Out A LONG Time Ago.
I Think That Version Of The Staten Island Ferry Came Out
In 2004

Blue and orange are NYC colors.
Blue white and orange, from the flag of the first Dutch republic (we were New Amsterdam)
I thought they break the bottle of Champagne on the front of boats not the rear
daam it floats !!! hehehe
oli shh!t i tought it will gonna fail lol
@fladave99 If someone smashed a bottle of champagne over my head, I'd get out of bed like that too.
Why did they launch it that way? It could of sank.
ohhhh i get it he tried to break the bottle but failed on his first attempt, ahhh.
That's actually a bad omen for ship launches.
Is this new??? looks like a ferry from the 60's
Modeled after the 1965 Kennedy Class to some degree.
shit almost flipped
why is it orange?
Anthony Stidd Orange u glad
i thought it would tip over
just go to 0:35

Wow great Staten Island video...check out mine
I Left that shit-hole 4 years ago and moved to Jersey.

Lucky Strike
@sackcheck it is broken on name
i wish it sank
