I definitely agree with you about matching hangers. I've been using the black velvet hangers exclusively for years. I even use velvet hangers for my little one's clothes. Lol, I would surprise your boyfriend and buy him a bunch of the all black plastic hangers. That small, inexpensive change will make his closet look 20 times better.
