  • At Guardian Safe & Lock, we had a customer bring in a 1999 Honda Accord Ignition cylinder that was experiencing issues. His key was no longer properly working the cylinder after years of use. So that lead to the question of what to do with his 99 accord ignition?
He did the smart thing and contacted us at Guardian Safe And Lock. Uriah then took the opportunity to show you, our viewers, how to properly rekey a worn and aged 1999 Honda Accord Ignition.
Auto cylinders commonly use wafers instead of pins, meaning that while rekeying them is a similar process to say, a door lock, there are some differences in technique that Uriah clears up today.

As you can see, rekeying automotive cylinders is a slightly different process than rekeying doors or cabinets. It even varies between makes and model years! Did you like the video? Let us know here in the comments section!

Tip: Get a strong magnet and stick it to the underside of your vise jaws. It'll catch those pins every time

Buy the cheap tool that removes that pin in seconds. Wafers should also be numbered.

I suck at taking ignitions apart. In that circumstance I typically cut a code key on a metal blank and see if that resolves the problem for the customer. Which it usually does. Them make them a new transponder key. What’s your opinion on the way I’ve been handling this situation? I’ve only been doing auto for a year now

Well I guess will make a lot more rekey videos for ignitions so you can learn lol

It all depends on the situation, sometimes we run the vin, sometimes there’s a key code on a door cylinder, sometimes you can lishi it and read the cuts, or sometimes you just need to disassemble it and decipher or rekey. If what your doing works most of the time then stick to that but if you try new methods then you’ll get better and be able to turn down less jobs. If you ever are stuck and not sure what to do on the ignition, call our shop and if we’re not too busy we can try to give you some advice. - Uriah

Great video Uriah! So you think partnering up with a local mechanic is better than pulling and re-keying on the spot? Have you had some liability issues with this? I only ask as I will be in the automotive Locksmith gig by January. Thanks for your generous information!

I just don’t have the time for the most part to tie my techs up on things like that and also it’s a lot less liability. Doesn’t mean we won’t offer that service at a later point but as of now we don’t, so we partner with a local mechanic. - Uriah
