    Been researching the game's mechanics before I start my first game and I have to say....having someone tell you what NOT to do is much more helpful than having them tell you HOW to make your build a certain way. Thanks for the tips!

    Some good points on character creation. Based on my own experience from playing, here is my added input:
    - Crafting and Blacksmithing are both extremely useful abilities if you have Men-At-Arms based characters in your group. Blacksmithing can be used to improve your weapon for extra damage, and Crafting can be used to improve heavy armor and remove the movement penalty and actually turn it into a movement bonus. I would however advice against giving it to on of your player characters as Jahan (companion hired in the first town) has the Talent Scientist already giving him +1 in each, so make him your smith and crafter
    - The talent Pet Pal is extremely useful and I would highly recommend giving it to one of your player characters. Aside from opening up some really funny dialogue with animals, every single dungeon has rats scattered in them and talking to them provide hints for the puzzles in that specific dungeon. Also Pet Pal opens up several side quests
    - In the place called "The End of Time" you can at some point (after 5 star stones) buy 2 books, 1 gives you +1 attribute point and the other gives you +3 ability points. The vendor has only one of each, but vendors reset their stock at each level up, so playing normally you unlock the vendor at level 10 essentially giving you access to 11 books of each type (provided you have the money to buy them)

      How did it go? I loved Baldur's Gate 3, and I'm just finishing up Divinity: Original Sin 2, playing both co-op with my little sister (only 71 years old, and very new to computer games). I hear that the first Divinity: Original Sin can also be played co-op, so that's probably next. Any tips?

    • @jakeryan2805
      @jakeryan2805 3 месяца назад +1

      @@Bill_Garthright The first game was great honestly. I suggest investing heavily 1 character to be your blacksmith. Crafted weapons like swords, and axes were hands down the best. There is no armor system for enemies like in the second game. I haven't touched the second one yet so you are ahead of me there. Save often. Auto save is far and few between!!!! You get two main heroes. Build them to compliment each other. Like one a mage, and one a warrior ect.

    • @Bill_Garthright
      @Bill_Garthright 3 месяца назад +1

      @@jakeryan2805
      Thanks!
      Note that, in the second game, I never touched a weapon. As an air/water mage, I just stunned or froze our enemies, so they couldn't do anything. That worked _great!_ I carried a wand (so I could have a shield), but I almost never used the wand for anything. I just cast spells.
      My sister - who is very new to games - had a hard time focusing, so her character tended to be all over the place. But she mostly used a crossbow. That didn't do nearly as much damage as my spells, and my spells were great for crowd-control, too. (If enemies got next to me, I had very strong close-range spells, too.) So, based on the second game, I wouldn't have even considered using a melee weapon. (Note that we both had the Lone Wolf perk, so it was just the two of us.)
      But part of that was because of the armor system in the second game. You needed to focus on either physical or magic attacks, not both. And my magic attacks were just far and away better than anything my sister could do with her ranged weapon (partly because I specialized, admittedly). But that might not apply in the first game.
      PS. The second game was incredible. We started with that, because I didn't realize the first game could be played co-op. (Apparently, it can.) Baldur's Gate 3 was amazing, too, if you haven't played that yet.

    Telekinesis is a great 1 point wonder skill. items that give +1 boost further but 1 hard point spent is worth it. No longer having to skirt dangerous clouds/fiery patches/poison puddles, to seal off its "node" granted a STR based char could probably just 'throw' the vase/crates but TK is visually appealing... also lets you loot/steal stuff you can't reach due to a guard's patrolling path/ facing.

Good stuff bro.

    this guide is so insanely good, the MOST important thing i think was at the start where you explain 'what will you have at the end'
    There are so many guides out there going straight into the core of creating a specific character weither it be a battlemage or w/e without letting us know the most important part, what will we have at the end of the game to begin with
    + video in my opinion

      Darklough Most PC's could probably run this game, and if you want you can get a decent gaming pc for a bit more than a ps4. Don't have to be rich :) Game would not really run well for consoles, as long as it doesn't affect PC's though I guess I wont care. However when developers get to the point where they develop for pc games and consoles at the same time quality is lost.

    Tip: Don't be afraid to invest a single point in certain skills like Man-at-Arms or Geomancer. Some of the abilities aren't really affected by your strength or intelligence, making them very useful for any character. Take Midnight Oil and Helping Hand for example. They both have a 100% chance of working unlike most other skills that scale with your attributes. I'M A NOOB AND I KNOW THESE THINGS BECAUSE I'VE HAD TO RESTART THE GAME AT LEAST 20 TIMES TO FUCK AROUND WITH HOW EVERYTHING WORKS. Also, I've noticed that Lone Wolves are better in the long run. Haven't tried it with Glass Cannon, though.

    TO ANYONE WATCHING THIS VIDEO AND ACTUALLY LISTENING TO THIS! If you actually intend on playing this game, don't be an idiot and listen to anything anyone tells you! Build your character the way you want. Maybe you'll regret it later, but that's the fun of the game. I know what this guy is trying to say here, but it only really applies to anyone who's already played the game...and by that time you'd know all this stuff anyway...I really recommend you play this game without watching any videos about it like I did. I followed it in the past when it was being kickstarted but forgot about it for a while. My friend saw a recommendation by someone on twitter, and I was like "oh, that game." and then we both got it and it was fun. Watching stuff like this ruins the mystery in my opinion. Watch this only if you're obsessed with min/maxing as some people are and that's okay. Otherwise, I recommend you get your ass kicked and end up needing to make a new character.

      MetalHearts100 Right I barely have time to play at all..if I go in to a game I don't want to lose 20+ hours because of a character build mistake with no restats available. By the time I realized I've messed up a month or so has probably passed with the few hours a week I get to play and I'm on to the next game. Guides like these on what NOT to do let me still play around with my build and have fun without screwing up so bad that I have to restart, and this is one game from what I've heard about it that I really want to enjoy.

    • @FlippingNinjaFtw
      @FlippingNinjaFtw 7 лет назад +3

      You can buy their stuff with items, then if you kill them they will always drop your items. So in practice what happens is that you kill them and get all their items & gold.
      So technically both bartering, reputation & pick pocket are more or less useless. You might not want to kill merchants, but you'll get so much gold that you don't really care anyway.
      That said, it kinds of ruin part of the fun roleplaying experience.

    For fellow munchkins: 4 speed-maxed and int/con-second glass cannon archmages, including sondro/elessa and jahan/wolfgraff(yep, SPEED!!) are just OP, outclassed by telekinesis only, probably. Summons, crowd control, heavy debuffs, direct damage - you have it all x4 with more than 15 action points every round from like lvl 8-9. Bairdotr can be utilized for crafting and lore, Madora for trading(be sure to get her as you're about to finish +reputation quests), and thats about it.

    You can create a very effective hybrid in ranger/rogue since they basically use the same stats except for perception. This leaves you with a very versatile class, you can sneak for backstabs and scouting, but should the battle not be in favour of a rogue due to aoe´s or opponents line of sight, then you switch to ranger to support your party and use all those nifty arrows.

    People might say it's the best part of the game, but absolutely gimping your character unknowingly from level 1 is the part I hate most about the game. I would be okay with having a gimped character early on, but having the option to continue grinding and battling to gain infinite amount of ability/stat points to add on my character and truly make a unique character. Honestly this is just a veil of the typical Tank, melee range type stuff that we've seen a million times. The more time I invest in my characters, the more I think, he would be MUCH stronger if I rebuilt him from scratch but screw it, I've already spent 10 hours of my life on this.

    Good advice here. I had a friend who restarted twice and eventually ended up writing the game off because he couldn't seem to get that trying to be a jack of all trades was not going to work. I made a solid pair of characters with a male knight and female cleric and made it through without having to lower the difficulty (Good choice of classes) but pretty much everything you mention had me thinking "This would have been a nice thing to know when I started"

Him and my Knight character had a bit of trouble early game but are now, with my knight having 1000 HP and Weather the Storm, surviving every fight easily. Jahan made a HUGE difference as well, and the Man At Arms heal ability helped a load as well.

    Poison is not a magic damage type and thus res from weather the storm doesn't add to your poison res. Also 80% is the max (non-magic buff) resistance and shield block you can have so the only way to increase that thresh-hold is through potions and spells so weather the storm can only bring you up to 80% res to fire lightning and ice. (shield block has a hard cap at 80% as there is no magic to aid this fyi)
    Also helpful hint: Any time a rock paper scissors match is about to begin you will have three options (Reason, charisma, and intimidate) It doesn't matter what you choose, but before you pick press F5 to quick save and when it goes into the rock paper scissors match, skip it or play it out (Doesn't matter) and if you lose simply press F8 to reload your quick save and try again. Never invest points into charisma unless you have extra points to spare (which you shouldn't).

    I appreciate this and other "perfection" guides but I don't think I'd really want to make use of it. The problem for me here is the same that I would run into in a Mass Effect play-through or even Skyrim; I would start choosing the consequences I most prefer before I even begin the game instead of making real choices.
    The game then becomes bland and uninteresting and potentially even annoying at times as I wallow in boredom through a normally extravagant storyline where enjoyment is replaced by a predetermined path to the most desired outcome.
    What I need is for the choices I make in a game like this to not be dictated by their consequences, I need to make the choices I actually want to and would in the moment.
    This is probably far too philosophical for the likes of the Internet but oh well, thought I'd share my two cents.

    • @Drphillgood
      @Drphillgood 9 лет назад +3

      +Jack Gordon "What I need is for the choices I make in a game like this to not be dictated by their consequences" So you want to make choices but not have the consequences of those choices? That seems to be the way people want to make decisions in life too. There are always results from choices that are made, good or bad. Just play the game if you want to make your choices in the game as you really would. That's what this game is made for. If you want to be like this douchebag and minmax your game then so be it, it won't be as fun and you already basically played the game watching how to get min maxed so why even play it? Also I assume you got your 2 cents by watching a youtube video and figured out how to get them without actually earning them so they are pretty much worthless.

    • @Eli-ee2yr
      @Eli-ee2yr 9 лет назад +18

      +Drphillgood I'm not sure you're understanding what I'm trying to get across. I'm not saying that I want to make specific choices and be unaffected by negative consequences of those choices, I'm saying that I want to choose a choice, and not choose a consequence.
      To put it into perspective, imagine asking a child if they like the colour Blue or Red more. Initially, the child will probably tell you which colour they like most. Then complicate this, by asking the child if they like Blue or Red more, and then saying that if you like red more, I'll give you this toy, and if you like Blue more, I'll give you that toy. What will happen is the child will stop picking the colour they like most, and start picking the toy they like most.
      That was the simplest analogy I could come up with on the spot, but what it translates to in my situation, is for example in the case of Divinity: Original Sin, I might instead of choosing which class I actually want to play, I might choose which class is most useful in particular situations, which consequently removes much enjoyment, unless I per chance actually want to play the class that might be considered most useful. I would use another analogy from Mass Effect which might make more sense, but I don't want to create spoilers for anyone reading this.

      +Jack Gordon I agree.

    • @kayexzee
      @kayexzee 8 лет назад +1

      +Drphillgood You do understand that everyone has a different interpenetration of fun. it doesn't make someone a "douchebag" because there idea of fun is different then yours and it sure doesn't mean your playstyle is more fun then his and vice-versa.
      For instance I'm one of those douches that like to min/max. I didn't go straight online to figure out the best way, it was ton's of hours of work in game to figure it out, which i find fun, aswell as just playing the game. Now i can look at a video like this and appreciate someone else interpretation of it. There is no end all be all way to have fun. As there is also no right or wrong way to play a game. You seem to have a problem with people that do this which is strange to me considering it has no effect on you, relax man...

    Can you respec at any point in the game? I have a rogue that I (stupidly) took glass cannon on because I thought it would be clever. Nothing like being one-shot.

      You will eventually be able to respec. However, you will lose ALL you skills and there is only one walk in shadows skill book in the game.

    I beat the game (1st time playing the game) on novice level with numerous redundant abilities in my party, and no master level spells in any magic school, just lots of master level scrolls bought, as well as dozens of paid for master level spells that I couldn't use. My gear was pretty stinking amazing though (PLENTY of gold toward the end of the game), and I had TONS of health potions and resurrect scrolls for the final boss (which I only used one huge health potion).
    Divinity is HARD puzzle-wise, but pretty forgiving ability-wise, at least on novice level. All this stuff in this video is great, and will probably come in handy on medium difficulty level and above...

    Great game. Good guide. Thanks! I didn't know the level 5 info. My one bit of advice would be to make your rogue (for me the dumb guy from the graveyard mine) be good at backstabbing AND crossbow stuff. Along with a ranger that gives a lot of chances to get rid of opposition before they have even managed to get an attack started! Edit: I forgot to mention that having the spider attack is a gamechanger: careful positioning of it is important though. Worth getting a point in geomancer for anyone without one just for that alone - and the boulder bash is also useful.

    Raising your skills in the abilities tree doesnt effect already learned spells. Raising your geomancer lvl from 1 to 2 doesnt improve your poison dart, intelligence and character level determines the strength of the poison dart.
    Pets dont seem to be affected by intelligence though, correct me if I am wrong, so you can make a ranger with 1 point in geomancer just for the spidey and a bit of extra oil.

    Well, there are a few points I fundamentally disagree with (with the exception of the amazing bonus of two-hand and the later need for at least a few points in tenebrium, I utterly ignore putting points in weapons), but there are also a couple points in this video that are incredibly important for new players to know. Overall, well worth the watch, though not much new learned for me personally.

    I just figured out that you can summon in and out with the piramide objects, there for my most favorite is pyro class. you don't need too heal. just stay at distance, flee when nessercary and take a nap on a bed. notice too my self don't go to other dimensions, you will loose the summon piramide on that spot into your bag. other then that i use those piramide objects a lot. Also with flee, you can flee with just one person, while the rest of the party is waiting, no harm done, healing your self out of combat.
    also you can send the piramide object too your three other members, so good, when your member is locked out, just send a piramide too him. summon and you are back at the group.

    Such a useful video to new players. I myself decided to pick lone wolf for both characters (the idea of extra points was too tempting), and although it's been a nice challenge, I didn't really start getting spanked until around level 8 with the boss by the church. If i'm completely honest I only beat it with a dumb amount of luck, I was stuck on that for around 2 hours.

    Combine anything you want and you will still win in Tactician mode. Also you need is scrolls, potions. Just keep crafting your own weapons and buff them those elemental resistances. Easy win.

    When he said "other ways to get things..."
    -In game, you can break chests and doors with weapons and spells. I often spam fire spells to burn doors down. Not a big fan of back tracing to find a key etc.
    -Invisibility spell trumps all sneaking skills. Spend some gold and get the spell book, no point in putting points in sneaking.
    -Telekinesis is surprisingly useful, allows you to steal from places that you can't reach.
    -This game is like Payday, stealing paintings are hugely profitable.

    • @Zalman1337
      @Zalman1337 10 лет назад

      5 Sneaking is useful for reducing the cost to Sneak to 1 AP and it makes it easier to not be seen (by reducing the enemy's sight radius). It works well with Guerrilla which doubles your damage done while sneaking.

    • @DeepbloodFang
      @DeepbloodFang 10 лет назад

      Zalman1337 plus backstabbing and speedcreeper, you get behind enemy with the least amount of points in invisible mode, backstab guerrilla, 100% critical with 2x damage.

    • @Zalman1337
      @Zalman1337 10 лет назад

      DeepbloodFang
      I prefer ranged weapons over daggers because I can just use Tactical Retreat or Cloak and Dagger to position myself behind the enemies and snipe them without ever getting attacked or detected. I also don't have to worry about repositioning myself to backstab.

    I made a rogue-archer and fire-earth wizard. Picked up Jahan and Madora - that woman just hate witches and all sorts of necromancy and sourcery so I thought it would be funny to made her a battle-witch. I had to find some good gear with strength or speed + intelligence but I have to say I made a good choice. Another summon and the ability to destroy summoned creatures plus some good buffs and debuffs. Great. I have to say that I had absolutely no problems during fights - if you have a lot of CC it's easy win ;)

    This game is a bit hard to start for the inexperienced RPG gamers, but it's a very well balanced one that focuses on freedom of playing it in different ways, not just the way that makes more "sense". So there are no "bad" characters, only bad players.

  • @RSAracos
    @RSAracos 6 лет назад

    Strength, with Battlemage, didn't seem important, since I felt the magic would help in those regards with buff/debuffs or use of both. I however really liked dual wielding wands even before inquisitor class was added. When done well, (albeit somewhat obvious) you can wreak havoc with elemental effects. Mind I'm also the type of player who likes to toy with the enemy too, I like to bat them around for a while before crushing them in one fell swoop.

  • @Wlerin2
    @Wlerin2 10 лет назад

    It also used to be possible to get a ton of extra attribute and ability points(1 and 3 per level after about level 10), but from what I hear they closed that minor loophole.
    Oh. And I'm pretty sure poison isn't considered magic damage, and isn't affected by Weather the Storm. Shadow damage isn't either. Neither are particularly dangerous (outside of the first zone, where poison is an issue).

    • @Wlerin2
      @Wlerin2 10 лет назад

      Re: Weather the storm
      It should also be noted that burning, chilled, wet, and similar status effects apply a resistance debuff to specific resistances. iirc this is a -25% debuff, so you need 125+ resistance to be truly immune to an element.
      As far as Charisma goes, there are several (not a lot, but still several) quests that you can just plain fail if you fail in rock-paper-scissors. The carnival in the first town comes to mind. Late game your opponents in RPS become somewhat harder to beat, as well.

      ***** He specifically states that this guide is recommended for players who are looking for a good quality character, not the absolute best. I think playing through the first time without worrying about what's the 100% best way to play, while still knowing a few things to avoid (since the game doesn't really tell you too much besides the tooltips), should be ideal, and this guide does a great job of reinforcing that concept.

    Kensai/Mage are one if not the most powerful build in Baldur's Gate, and it's an hybrid. Clerig/Ranger, or Fighter/Mage/Thief for soloing are also amazing, so your theory doesn't apply to that game.

    Add speed, at 20 action points per turn my rogue can control the whole battle field at first turn. I'm playing at hard, with a Pyrokinetic/Geomancer/Witchcraft, and Scoundrel/Marksman, plus Jahan=Aerothurge/Hydro/Crafting and Madora=ManatArms/Blacksmith. and it has been too easy, the only challenge I can give to my party is not being hit a single time from battles.

      Keep in mind that Constitution is also important for increasing your AP because if your turn AP is higher than your maximum AP, it just goes to waste. It's optimal to keep your Constitution equal to your Speed if you have Glass Cannon without Lone Wolf.
