  • Climbing Walsh's Pyramid in 130 seconds
(DJI FPV Medium Range Flight Test)
    LOCATION:
At almost one km above mean sea level (AMSL), Walsh's Pyramid near Gordonvale (& Cairns) in Far North Queensland, Australia takes several hours to climb (from base to peak) but I did it in 2 mins 10 sec (130 seconds)!
The Pyramid is situated approx. 25 km south of Cairns (-17.114239; 145.783616) in the far north section of the Queensland Sugar Cane Corridor - a tract of sugar cane farms spanning the majority of the eastern coast of Queensland.
    GEOLOGY:
Walsh's Pyramid is an independent peak and geological landmark formed from granite - part of the granitic intrusion that underlies the Bellenden Ker Mountain Range. The surrounding older rocks have been eroded away, leaving the Pyramid's harder granite standing alone. The large, pyramid-shaped mountain has an elevation of 922 meters AMSL and is named after James Walsh, an early European settler in the region.
    GREAT PYRAMID RACE:
The Pyramid is a popular hiking destination, attracting both locals and tourists. The neighbouring town of Gordonvale hosts the annual Great Pyramid Race (footrace) to the peak of Walsh's Pyramid and back each August.
What took my friends and I several hours to climb from only the base of the Pyramid to its peak (3 km)... takes serious race competitors under 2 hours to complete the entire 12.2 km race from the town centre to the Pyramid's peak and back. The current record stands at 1:15:34 set in 2007 by Neil Labinsky, a mountain specialist runner from the Sunshine Coast. The Women’s record is 1:32:06 set in 1997 by local runner Anita Appleby.
The climb is challenging but the views from the summit are stunning, with 360 panoramics of the region.

    FLIGHT DISTANCE & RANGE:
Maximum distance between Pilot and Bird = 2506 m.
Total distance flown from the same position = 7012 m
    DJI FPV - LIMITS:
My flights are divided into 3 distance categories:
    *** Short Range (0 - 2000 metres)
Easy/low-risk flights and absolutely what this bird was made for.
    *** Medium Range (2000 - 4000 metres)
High risk as the bird is a long way out and RTH will definitely initiate. Know your battery limits and learn all the features of your RC!
    *** Long Range (+4000 metres)
The risks of losing your drone become extreme and you really need to research all variables and weather. What emergency protocols could your flight involve? Make your Home Point elevation as high as possible - you'll need really good LOS.
    DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!
Unless you know what you are doing, the safety features on your drone will probably prevent you from flying beyond 4000 m anyway (i.e. critical low battery).
