    Born in the US to Colombian Parents. My entire family is mixed between born here and in Colombia. Colombian people in my opinion are opportunists at heart. My parents left never go to back unless they absolutely had to. One of those situations was in the early 2010's and my dad fell in love with it again. The amount money pouring in from foreign investment and lots of Ex-Pats made it seem like a great place, not the drug cartel warzone it was known for in the 80's and 90's. They bought a place but even they're not going back as much as they used to. Between the influx of illegal's from Venezuela, rise in robbery and murder is making it un-appealing. Every time I think about going I always hear "you just gotta know where to go, make sure you have a taxi driver lined up, never take an open drink from anyone, careful they don't blow that powder in your face to rob you, don't wear fancy jewelry." I wanna go on vacation, not be on constant alert.

      The latter part of your comment pretty much sums up any bad area in any developed country.
      I've spent a considerable amount of time in Medellín & Cartagena. More so Medellín. I carry myself according to the environment. I don't hangout all night, don't do clubs like that, no type of drugs . Working women met through friends not street girls are the way to go if you're seriously looking.

      I've been to Colombia 3 times in the last couple of years. I felt like it was a mix of Europe and North America. I never once felt scared, even visiting friends in Ciudad Bolivar for a BBQ. Just don't party like an ass, don't look for any vice at all, don't show off and you'll feel pretty safe. Avoid the obvious tourist traps. The same advice I give to anybody going anywhere in the world not just Colombia.

    This is how I read this whole incident. The criminals in Colombia are upping their game because of the negative publicity they are getting as word gets around on RUclips and other parts of the Internet: the bait speaks good English, she has a pet, she does not seem to be in a rush to get into a relationship. The target immediately relaxes and lowers his guard. This is what happened to this guy.

      I live in Boston. I will share 2 things. A former co-worker here in Boston, who is from Medellin, once told me something very interesting. He and his son went to Medellin for vacation. At one point they stayed at a hotel for a night. The next day they left. They took a cab. On their cab ride, they got stopped by these guys with guns. They ordered my co-worker to hand over whatever money he had. He complied. They then took off. My co-worker is convinced that someone in the hotel knew that they travelled from America and therefore supposedly had money. This person then tipped off the robbers who waited for him. Here's the second story. I know another Colombian here in Boston. She's in her late 50s or early 60s. The other day I mentioned to her about the tourists who are getting drugged in Medellin, her hometown. You know what she said? "Good for them, why are they going to pick up those women?" It felt really cold for her to say that but I wonder who else feels that way in Colombia? I have always wanted to visit Colombia but that has changed. Brazil, where I've also always wanted to go, remains on my plans.

  • @social5g
    @social5g 8 месяцев назад +314

    Yeah, I lived in Medellin for 5 years after having visited at least 20 times. I already speak Spanish fluently, having taken Spanish in school as it was required and I always dated Latina's in the states. Anyways, lived in Provenza in the best part of town, and one day I let my guard down and that's when I got robbed and stabbed. Luckily, I made it to the hospital in time before I bled out, so I was lucky to be alive.
    But it gets worse, when it was time to get discharged , the hospital administrator was going to have me arrested because I didn't have money to pay my bill (I had just been robbed of everything!!). Luckily the attending ER doctor was nice enough to pay my bill when the police showed up to take me to jail (for not being able to pay my hospital bill after I just got away with my life), and I went back the next day and paid him back. The moral of the story is that there is a HATE for foreigners (extranjeros) that did not exist when I first started going there back in 2014. Sure people will smile and want to be your friend, because if you are a good person with a good personality, that is attractive to people now matter where you go. But the tourism and the way it has affected the local population has created a resentment that will come back to bite you in the ass when you least expect it.
    I will be selling my place in Medellin this year because between the Velezanos and Colombians that work as gangs, they waited to strike when I least expected it. Ask Colombians about how they feel even about the huge influx of Velezanos, they are not happy about what that has done to the country the last seven years.
    Things in Medellin are going to get worse before they get better. The new mayor and the cops don't care about the foreigners. They know they can't think with their heads and they'll keep coming, thinking nothing will ever happen to them. And the criminals get stronger, and the girls get more emboldened, and the cycle continues........
    YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A FOREIGNER IN ANY COUNTRY YOU ARE NOT FROM, and with that comes racism and resentment. Don't shoot the messenger......... Good luck to all!

    • @obilaand
      @obilaand  8 месяцев назад +18

      Its not just foreigners though, the locals have much much higher rates of murders and crime. In most of Latin America, there is huge crime problems like Brazil with their moto robberies, then theres all the drug and cartel wars. One of the most horrific things most people dont talk about is the murder rates of women. The highest in the world. Maybe some of the murders of women are revenge from men who have been setup by women, (like this video) but many are just domestic violence murders. This region is messed up I dont know why people want to go there.

    Hi. I'm an Australian and got kidnapped in 2007 for sale to FARC. I went through an extensive legal process afterwards and learnt the system with the police and la fiscal won't work without you having an experienced legal rep. You must immediately secure a good experienced prosecuting attorney who can help direct the investigation. You cannot rely on the police alone. Another tip for medical is that you must get good health insurance to avoid the incident at the hospital. I was treated really well by the police and the local hospital and just paid my medical once I got hold of some cash. Eventually the woman involved in my case got caught and recieved a horrific sentence.

    Another thing that sticks out is how so many people simply did not care to help out. And the hospital did not do anything for over an hour as he was literally dying from blood loss. Having worked in the medical field I am surprised at the lack of concern by medical staff. Even the good hospital was less than spectacular at treatment. Maybe there are good aspects to such places but this is why we in America call it the Third world. They have low standards, are heartless and allow the worst elements of society to thrive.

    I’m Australian and we are known for traveling everywhere. Australia is by world standards, very safe and many Australians can often be a bet naive and reckless when traveling . I know more than a few friends who have traveled to Mexico, Brazil, Columbia and many other countries in South America. They mostly loved it but more than a few have been robbed. One was kidnapped by corrupt police and robbed, beaten and extorted in Mexico. I’m polite, and approachable (to a fault) I’m also pale skinned. I’m alert to danger but basically, I’m a target. Last year I had a layover in Medellin for just under 24 hours and decided to get a hotel in the city, walk around and check things out. I had great, helpful older gentlemen cabbies and all said the same thing when I mentioned wanting to check out Parque Lleras... Don't go! Well of course I went anyway but the last cabbie who drove me there really set me straight about specific things to avoid, mainly street prostitutes; But specifically the young ones. He went into detail about their methods saying the younger less experienced girls were overdosing their victims when slipping them drugs and several foreigners had died from the dosage. Of course he said don't buy any weed or drugs and that the cops were using undercover youth to bait foreigners so they could arrest and fine them.
    Well my idea of a good time is music, food and a small amount of booze so no problems for me. Plus with many years trapsing around NYC from a young age I'm usually good having my radar up. Anyway I found the Club Envy rooftop bar in the Charlee Hotel and it was Salsa night so I ended up having a great time! I'm usually very comfortable solo flying but in hindsight I would have welcomed a group of friends to explore with.

      95% of these sex tourists make the dumb assumption that they can get away with only speaking English and not having fluency in the local language. A handful of phrases is in no way at all remotely close to fluency. In LatAm you not only have to be fluent in the language but you also have to be fluent in the slang/colloquialisms which are different in every single country! Almost none of the Western men traveling to these places bother knowing all of that. You're a target anywhere where you don't match the local phenotype and you don't speak the language. @@purplespaceship2417 I definitely agree that there needs to be much more emphasis on learning the languages of places. I'm currently learning Spanish. That said, most people simply are not going to take the time to do that when they're only vacationing there for a week or so at a time. Most of them are not planning to live there or spend significant time there so most will not make that effort or make that investment. Learning a language, especially to fluency and with slang colloquialisms takes serious time. I do agree that learning a good level of the language will help. Mostly though, it will be the mindset and how one moves that will keep them out of trouble for the most part. I have no interest in pay for play and wouldn't use apps to meet a woman. If indeed I met one I would do it through trusted friends, colleagues, etc. Or I would be moving there and get in quality circles and meet only women with serious positive things going on in their lives that I can confirm. I'm a little older and wiser now and glad I didn't go there when I was a little younger b/c I would have been moving real reckless back then. Reality is a whole different story. When your primary motive for going there in the first place is to meet women - which it IS for the vast majority of single men traveling there - the drive to meet those expectations is what becomes the deciding factor. Fruitless outings that don't measure up to your expectations lead to looking on dating apps or finding sex workers. You really gotta let people tell a story. Either you have to have that journalistic skill to know what to ask and when, or you let people talk. That was more convoluted than it had to be. Sheesh. That said, It was a good story. That was one heckuva scary story where this guy was lucky as heck. Thankfully I'm not there for women, BUT, man it feels like right now, it could just be a friend setting you up. That had to be the most perfect long game I've heard of so far. I mean she played her part perfectly. It's a little funny the guy got shot multiple times, and the cops are taking him on an apartment tour. So many dimensions to this story, I don't envy this guy this situation. And that healthcare experience sounds horrible. No aspect of this story was good. Wow. What an experience. One thing I will say with certainty, we need to stop normalizing this as just a way of life. Mass shooting is NOT normal just like attempted kidnapping robberies should NOT be normalized. This should NOT be normalized. I think we, in our justification for going to places like Colombia, try to normalize this. I´m not saying we shouldn´t go to Colombia. I am saying we should never consider this normal. The day this is truly normal is the day I say we should NOT travel to Colombia. You can love that city all you want to, but you better know that city does NOT love you. It was VERY informative. Live your best life.

    The black Muslim guy from a couple days ago tells a story and people say they dont believe him because it sounds too much like a movie. people are very naive and dont understand the world they live in,. these things happen. this also sounds like a movie but it happened so stay out of colombia folks., its not a good country. the authorities need to take control of this before people start coming back.

    If he had gone down and complied, allowing himself to be ducktaped, he would be completely helpless and totally at their mercy and would have likely it would led to him eventually being killed after they took him for all the money they could steal and extract. Fighting back would at least give him a chance to fight his way out.

I've went and it was the worst place i ever been....go to Brasil guys, sooo much better in EVERY aspect and a lot safer than Colombia. yes you might get your phone stolen there too, but thats it! they wont drug or kill you and the people are the nicest you'll ever meet, much nicer thanin Colombia!

    I will tell you the number one thing to look for: does she have anything to lose? If she works a stable job, is close with her family, and you know her full name, identity, and address - you’re less likely to be dealing with a scammer. The most important one being, doss she work a normal job. A woman’s lack of employment likely means she’s a street girl.

    He sounds sui.cidal to me. He instantly made the decision he would rather die than be hogtied, got in a long fight, healed up, thought about it, posts pics of the chick, talks about the fight on social media, and remains in the country. His reason for staying and risking his life is because he likes the hip hop scene and weather. It seems like he is done with life and has decided he is fine with Colombia being his final resting place.

      I think his angle is more that he realizes that he needs to be more careful, and he likely will be. Going to a girl's place is a huge no-no, even though he approached her first and in an area not given to daytime prostitutes.
      As to tipping off his attackers, if they wanted to kill him simply for revenge they had every chance to but left him alive. Plus keep in mind that Medellín is a huge city of 4 million. Finding him would be no easy task, though he did say that he once returned to the place where he met the girl for coffee. He should skip that.
