      @@Chris-ms9dh That’s exactly correct. Drugs, booze, hookers and hookup apps are a recipe for problems here. Walking around the streets late at night, half drunk or amped up on tusi will never end well. But some people will never learn.

    Buzzed and out walking at 2AM is actually how you formally invite robbery in many countries. Taxis are very cheap in Medellin. I suggest if it's dark outside that you use them. I lived in Medellin for 3 years and another city for 3 years and I have never been robbed. That doesn't mean it can't happen still...

I lived in Medellin for two years awaiting my wife's visa and I'm not talking Poblado, however I did live in Laureles at one point but I also spent a lot of time in the north end of the city (Bello) and one thing I can't give the time of day to is the Goofy BS youtubers that try and sell Medellin like some kind of south Florida paradise that's super cheap. @@kirkykirky sure, I would be happy to. First of all I'm glad that you felt safe on your stay! Medellin is a beautiful city and some people can be nice. But Colombia is still a very poor country, and many of the same problems that we have in the US, unemployment, poverty,lack of good jobs etc, it is way worse there. So as a country that has a history of that kind of poverty, and violence from cartels, the gorillas, corrupt cops, there are many things about the culture that are toxic. The relationships between men and women, the super religious culture, purity culture that is male chauvinistic (and big time! Men having mulitple lovers, getting drunk on the corners with their buddies, meanwhile the women have to cook and clean and take care of the kids, and I mean the men aren't expected to do ANYTHING), the purity culture judging women but not men. All the bad stuff about capitalism and bosses and hierarchies is ten fold, super low wages, basically desperate people, has just created many problems. And one big one is violence. Scamming people, not trusting anybody, gossip, envy is huge between women. I could tell you story after story. One time a musician Colombian friend of mine took a taxi home after her gig in a restaurant, on the way home the taxi driver stopped, physically dragged her out of the car in the dark spot on the way,, keeping her keyboard, and drove off. A Colombian, much less a foreigner. Poblado, Laureles is very nice, even the stadium and even downtown can seem nice. But everywhere else is very poor. I'm sure you have heard of all the foreigners turning up dead, almost daily? I personally would just not risk it, and I also don't see the point in trying to marry a Colombian. It was a fun fantasy for awhile, until it got real. Oh, and I'm fluent in spanish as well, and married to a Colombian woman, and I've gotten to know her family, her brother who is a retired cop, who has told me so much shit that is unbelievable, man. I'm not at all a patriotic guy, USA is damn messed up, but I live in smalltown USA and my life is pretty chill and decent. The most drama I have is with the latinos in my life here. I used to always want to hang out with the latinos here, but now I prefer my american friends. It could sound racist maybe, but I assure you that I believe in equality and am fine with diversity. But I'm just expressing my personal preferences. Cheers

    I stayed in that area on Cale 42 between 71 and 70. I walked that area at all hours of the day and night and nobody ever came up to me. Its busy during the day because a lot of small business there but at night its pretty quite. Im also an obvious foreigner but not necessarily from the US. It can be pretty sketchy at night near that Exito especially since Cale 44 is right near there which goes directly to El Centro. Homeless wandering around and some try to follow you so keep your head on swivel. I never used uber when I was in Laureles, I just walked everywhere. It's chill between 73 and 76 near laurels park, played my music super loud at 4am in that park and people were chill about it. But yeah man, as much I dig Medellin.. you have to always watch your back.

Im trying to get out if this rat race so I can enjoy my life and eventually I'll make Medellin my home base. Medellin is way better than Bogota thats for sure. Yeah man, Laureles is supposedly the next best option after Poblado. Ive stayed there, Bombona which is between El Centro and Buenos Aires, near Centro Comercial La Central (the mall) which in Buenos Aires, and recently El Tesoro in Poblado. Ive stayed in Manila too which is in Poblado where all the hostiles and backpackers stay. I really enjoyed El Tesoro near Amsterdam Plaza but your'e right, it's pretty pricey in the Poblado hills. Fine ass women in that area and away from homeless, drug dealers, working girls, and people begging on Calle 10 near Provenza and Lleras. I hear Envigado is also chill and def less crime there. As well Sabaneta, just really not much excitement and things to do there and it's not walking friendly. Stay safe man!

    That's because Laureles, Poblado, Floresta and some "rich" areas are full of thiefs and homeless. Bit in a normal hood like for example in middle of Itagüí is more safer than Laureles. Because if your hood have a local gang is difficult being robbed. And never walk alone at night in Laureles, the downtown, Poblado, Floresta, Santa Maria, and avoid every zone with invisible bounderies (Bello, Castilla, Manrique, Lovaina, Juan 23, La Divisa, Pradera, etc...) is easy avoid them. Got mugged in 2010 in Centro. I arrived at night and decided to walk around to get oriented. I knew the chance of robbery was high so I just took a litttle cash and nothing else. Sure enough two scruffy older teens flashed a knife and reached for my wallet (nothing but 20 dollars in it). It was over in 3 seconds! Not even time to get scared. I was very lucky. But no other problems then or in 2018. bike, walk, metro all fine in all areas. I hope it did not get worse but sounds like it did. If I go back I would stay in Manilla though. Middle aged gringo. I Visited other major cities in Colombia too and never had problems of any kind. In fact in South American cities I never had a problem, but in Quito I narrowly avoided problems by spotting some guys checking me out in advance of them trying anything. In future I will more likely travel with a friend. Actually Brazil is the most dangerous in my opinion but my experiences are all out of date.

      It depends on where in Laureles you are. La 70 is a dodgy area. There are other parts of Laureles that are more residential and a lot safer. That said, walking alone at 2am anywhere in Medellín is not the wisest thing you can do.

      I left Ireland almost a year ago to move to Colombia with my Colombian wife because I saw the writing on the wall for what's happening in Ireland and the rest of Europe. Ireland is exploding with riots, murders, rapes, robberies etc, all because of open borders and Africans and Muslims pouring in who hate the locals. Spain is having the same problems and it's going to get a lot worse. I live in Medellin now and despite the dangers here it feels like an oasis of calm compared to what's happening at home. Europe is being destroyed on purpose. My advice is to get out while you still can. My wife thought I was crazy 18 months ago when I said we need to leave for the future of our children. And despite life being harder here to make money, in less than 18 months Europe will be harder and more dangerous. Trust me. Get out while you can

      I could have written that comment myself.
      Over a year ago, I told my wife, who is also from Colombia, that we should move to Colombia. She thought I was crazy, but I explained everything that you've mentioned in your comment, plus a bunch of other things that are destroying Spain (mainly the Socialist/Communist government that doesn't protect the Spanish people). We are now in the process of selling our home here in the south of Spain. As soon as we sell our home, we will be relocating to Medellin. I don't see how Europe is going to cope with everything that's happening in a few more years, and I definitely don't see a future for my children in Spain.
      Hope to see you in Medellin, I can't wait to leave!

    . Having resided in Medellin for three years, the last year seems to have seen a spike in crime.
    While sitting at Suramerica Metro, having a tinto. Street guy approaches begging for a cigarette...refused. Street guy wants to swap a pair of scissors (10,000cop?)...i refuse, he grabs my umbrella, threatens me with the shears. I recover the umbrella, start walking stairs into metro station...street guy attempts to kick my feet from under me. Bystanders have called the police. Street guy exits the scene...police arrive, 15 minutes later. Cruise the area...nothing.
    One week later having another tinto, different location...street guy is now paying for his own tinto AND cigarette. See's me...departs.

    Bro I'm a native new yorker with lots of family in Medellin. Glad you are ok but my advice bro is to not walk around alone very late/early morning in most places of South America unless its a busy area. There is a term there " no dar Papaya". Laureles is a cool upper class area but its also close to some rough areas so you will get criminals from neighboring areas in motos scoping out for easy victims dueing those hours. It's generally much safer in areas more south that are harder to access from those hoods like Envigado or Sabaneta. More chill though so you will have to Uber to the action more north if you want to party a lot.

      @@derricksur9638 personally if I didn't have a need to commute during normal rush hours I'd be staying in Sabaneta or Envigado and Uber everywhere. Not judging but for those who want to have tons of party spots or bars within walking distance(tend to be most young party minded foreigners) will prefer El Poblado or Laureles which also attract the criminals scoping out for easy victims. Fighting back petty robberies will get you killed there. Not worth it. Those looking to walk around in a party state alone at night should do expensive Europe or safe expensive cities in USA.

    Came up in my suggestion and like your positive energy but bro rule #1 is always stay somewhere with doorman h24 or dont ever invite anyone over because they will have 100% chance of getting in your apt! but you can have your phone and walk just not on it in certain places so you have to get to know neighbourhoods asap and have to pay attention to surrondings if you see the same person/group and etc. The thing with Laureless that people that live there dont really mentions is that theres really a zone or 2 thats "safe" the rest is 50/50 like Poblado its Castropol, Las Palmas, Alejandra, Tresor and etc then the rest you cant really walk but I am bit more free able to walk from provenza to my place and even walked from Poblado to Belen near the airport by accident but because I pass for a negrito colombiano I wasn't bother.
    I know its hard to do but if someone tries to rob you stop fighting back because some will kill you for it since whatever you have can put them well for a couple months or year. You got lucky that for you they didnt have that intent but dont play that game.
    Why you would go to el centro!? like during the day time in control zones is fine since you just need to worry for pickpockets but other than that no no, even though theres a nice discotheca there but its 50/50 whenever you go so not worth it lol.
    I dont know why no americans really talk about this but the reason why certain people get robbed and etc compare to others(americans) is because if you cant pass for a Colombia and especially you americans, caucasians and asians, you will be targeted so it may not be a normal habit for you but you have to be on your guard not to where someone thinks your guarding something valuable but yeah and scan your surroundings. Its something that someone should of told you before but you cant really walk at night like that and like you just said cabify or uber everywhere at night even if its 5-10mns away because its not expensive there anyways.
    1 thing I also noticed living in Medellin is that you americans dont really stick together...and after meeting some I see why but they always have their clique or dont want to hangout with other americans lol but we europeans hear someone speaking our language or meet other europeans and we dont really care what their origins are and we will bring them into the group, tell them the do and do nots and etc. Which is why majority of victims are North American(Americans and Canadians except Mexicans). Not saying you should only stick with Americans but I dont the lack of Americans I see on youtube and Medellin doing that is crazy because listen to your video and it could of all been avoided if you had someone that warned you vs finding out.
    But I hope that your stay in Medellin turns positive because it is really a beautiful city! You can submerge into the culture but you have to be aware.

      @SAFFIESsendsIT  6 месяцев назад

I see a lot of people in party mode in medellin so thats why I was hoping some people can learn from my mistakes haha and yes I stand out big time as a gringo with my super white skin and green ass eyes .. I''m used to getting a lot of looks but in my experience I just say hola and 99.9% of people say hola back and thats the end of it .. unfortunately there is some people that will see people like me and attack them like they are an atm haha thanks for commenting !!!! much appreciated :)

Getting robbed that close to you means they have eyes on where you live. I was there in Cali/Bogota for a month. Moving to 4M+ per month would probably solve that. Spanish is required in Colombia. And checking who looking at and who behind. I see this all time, peope not paying actions. Laureles is been getting hot lately over there. No taxis at night, completely shady some are, only takes Ubers and don't be out pass 2am walking around. If you don't don't in your home state, don't outside the us either.

    I'm a colombian, I'm just going to say. "no dar papaya" that's it, it's not rocket science and you dont need to be an expert to know that if you are in a place where there is a higher percentage of finding bad people you need to be careful at all times, if you guys don't like that a third world country is has it's flaws, the door is open, nobody called you here and promised you the sacred land. Everything in life has pros and cos, use your brain and analyze your situation every single time, but if you guys are so brain dead to not understand that basic common sense is necessary then don't even bother to ruin your "disney life" just for some 304's of Medellín. there is a saying very popular in here "El que busca encuentra" translate it and interpret it as you wish. Best regards but c'mon, how do you think us Colombians live here? think for a bit. I'm tired of always watching some foreigners complaining about stuff when they themselves get into those situations due to being so careless.

      It's not for no reason. It's because you're their ticket out of poverty in a place with classism & racism is RIPE. The best way to avoid problems in 3rd wolrd countries is HELP PEOPLE versus just coming to live and flaunt your wealth. Essentially that's what you're doing with a video about a $500 a month apartment in a place where people only make $300 per month average . Make videos where you help people. The streets of Colombia are watching RUclips all day every day. Get known for the right things and not just being, what many would label 'a new age colonizer' or selfish opportunist. Latin America is DEFINITELY having a moment of realization about how foreign countries have exploited them and rejected them for entry for years and now all those people wnat to come here now b/c of inflation@@SAFFIESsendsIT

      Its true that there are a lot of safer cities in Colombia that i dont mention so they dont blow up lol. Medellin is like NYC in the 80's but with a major Narco past to boot. NYC in the 80's was still considered an amazing city according to history but it wasnt nearly as safe as it is today. Someone walking around drunk at 2AM in NYC during the 80's was asking for it. Same concept. As a tourist always remember that the minimum wage there is like 300 USD A MONTH.

    You have an easy attitude about being jumped. You could have been killed? They beat you up and brought you to another part of town?

    could have easily been avoided by simply staying in a hotel instead of Airbnb and taking an Uber.

      @gabe5892 thanks for watching !! yes a lot of nice hotels for short stays but I have been here for a few months so Air bnbs are nice and I was hanging at a place I always hang out at 2 blocks away :) Hopefully these crimes stop so more people can experience how cool this city is like I have up until this experience !! Thanks for the comment !!!! much appreciated :)

      @@SAFFIESsendsIT for sure man what those people did to you was wrong period and I hope karma gets to them. I'm strongly against any criminal activity. Economic conditions doesn't justify it in my opinion. I'm just saying visitors shouldn't be scared or expect this to happen to them because it can be easily avoided with very little compromise. Like you just take an Uber to your destination and then back home and your phone/bag won't get jacked it's that simple. The burner phone is a good idea tho if you are going to walk around! One of the characteristics of Laureles is that there's a lot of quiet/hidden streets. The Uber drivers will tell you not to be walking around this area at night. I know two blocks probably seemed like no big deal but it actually was a very wreckless decision. Stay safe man

    Laureles is not a chill spot like you said if you got jumped outside your place
    I always have a question why all you visitors don’t have a knife or some thing on you to protect yourself even if it is illegal just like in the hood here I’d rather be caught with it then with out it
    I’d strap up and register it

    • @SAFFIESsendsIT
      @SAFFIESsendsIT  6 месяцев назад

      @rojovision1 Thanks for watching !! and yes I was thinking of getting a knife but a lot of places will pat you down in Laureles as well so it depends how you want to go about it .. I have friends that have also had knives pulled out on them for their phone / belongings so its a tricky situation in general .. hopefully the crime stops at some point but I dont know !! haha thanks for commenting :)
