  • Few Irish figures in history have captured the public imagination like Red Hugh O'Donnell. The Irish Chieftain battled English rule during the Nine Years War and invoked the help of the Spanish. After their defeat at Kinsale in 1601, Red Hugh fled to Spain and died there waiting for an audience with King Philip III. In 2020 the search for Red Hugh's remains attracted worldwide interest to Valladolid which was, for a short time, the capital of Spain during the Spanish Golden Era.
