Not having a running aquarium is a great time to get some pre owned items that are for sale including the best reason or reasons I have been looking for miscellaneous etc. is when it's free...usually I am not suggesting that the 1 piece at a time is the way to go but it is a great way to save & patience and effort are useful
This was the perfect video for me. I am home recovering from my third vocal chord surgery, and the calm and peaceful vibe could not have been better for me.
Important to be able to sit and enjoy an aquarium. I think the one downside to really getting into the hobby is the challenge of keeping be able to enjoy your own tank without constantly wishing for when such a plant is more mature or such a carpet more complete or such an algae issue resolved. Think that is a big part of the appeal of videos of other people's tanks where you tend not to see the issues. Tips on how to relax with your own Scape greatly appreciated. Always loving Tai's "messy" style 😃
I now forever have string algae issues but I have come to enjoy their usefulness as they clean the water very well alongside my live plants. I can simply pull them out as they all stick to each other. They don't absolutely take over the tank, but they do come out quite a bit

It's similar to my home aquarium aquascape, and I have been surprised and delighted to discover various species of fry from time to time. So satisfying to know the fish are healthy and happy and obviously living as natural a life to nature as possible in an aquarium. You have nice tank and i think you could keep it(1500), just downscale to: one filter with heater, no co² or diy, sell the t5 fixture, find barebones ABS cover/Hood to keep temperature and add DIY 12V DC led lamp(taking fraction of t5 Energy). Its easy to make led lamp with 16cm wide aluminium rails, cheap chinese transistor 12v dc power suply, manual dc dimmer, smd 5630 stiff led strips: red mixed with blue(3:1), 6500k, 8500k ( in proportion of 1 line mixed color to 2 white lines). Or simplier with cold white 12v dc led bulbs (g5.3 connector) there are ones with narrow angle beam lenses for cheap( 1€/4W). I wish you well, and hope i could help. Adam
I am not sure why the size of the tank ref. cost and maintenance is an issue. A large temperate tank, should be, properly set-up is easier to run and will consume less CO2 and obviously energy. Suspect the T5 lights are very advantageous to the set-up, the substrate, in my experience, makes much less a difference than many manufacturers suggest. A large temperate tank properly filtered, not over-lit or stocked and planted carefully in terms of plant selection, I would have thought, would require a glass clean once a fortnight and some minor maintenance once a month, running a tank at around normal room temperature using the central heating should save on energy, T5 lights are quite efficient, run for 6 hours a day...shouldn't break the bank. Only suggestions, I like longstanding tanks to really prove the viability of the technical equipment and to address the fish, plant, substrate sustainability issues. Lovely, lovely tank.
I noticed something like 216W T5s (4 * 54 W) in the video, that's about half a Megawatt a year or 165 Euro with my provider unless prices shoot up again. As the maintenance goes, tanks with CO_2 are maintenance heavy: check the bubble counter fish won't be poisoned in the afternoon, trim the plants twice a week, dose more ferts than without CO_2 and so on. Of course there are all kinds of reasons for CO_2 injections from moss growing faster than SAE eat it to some plants growing at all.
@@PaulZyCZ Remember lumens per watt T5/T8/LED is not that much more efficient, quite marginal gains really, it is more life expectancy of bulbs that LED wins on. Agree completely with CO2, trimming can be a pain, lower light, modest CO2 injection and lower temperatures can make life easier, but in a properly insulated house an extra 50 watts of light or and extra 3 degrees of heating in a tank is nothing compared to a tumble drier or oven.

It's a pity Tai is going to break it up. It's a really nice tank. But I understand the reasons. My largest planted tank is 714l low-tech and unless I want to keep it "spotless clean", no leaves floating... trimming the plants once a week or two, glass once a month and so on. True, it's a compromise, some plants won't grow at all, some end up eaten by SAE (despite all the veggies), but if I plugged CO_2? Trim twice a week, dose more ferts, check the bubble counter every morning (and unplug the CO_2 on vacations). It could be something with my set, a faulty Camozzi needle vent, a behavior of half-empty bottle, but there's always a point where dosing goes up. Also larger tank means higher electricity bill, although that could be offset with more efficient light source. Some 60 W quality LED light _should_ provide the same light like those 216 W of T5s and pay up in months with energy costs nowadays. EDIT: Sorry, it's probably more like 120 W of LEDs, maybe more. But it could be doable. I think I had bit of high temperature from inflammed tooth when typing my comment.
largely agree, but yeast and sugar CO2 is green and rarely causes excessive growth but is enough to counter the low CO2 issue of the low tech tank, LED lights are great I use them but honestly don't exaggerate how efficient compared to T5/T8 and CFL. I reckon you still need for a stem/Dutch style tank 1 watt per litre LED or T5 and around 20 ppm of CO2.
@William McDowell Right, that was bit of BS from my side, despite high temperature from aching tooth (went to dentist this morning) I should have double checked that. Aquatlantis claims something like double efficiency compared to T5/T8. I don't know how much of that is marketing and what is the actual efficiency. I haven't been using fluorescent tubes for years, preferring LED strips instead. While they last for years, look slim, most of them aren't efficient for fish tanks. I still use them, 46 W or "4180 lm" of SB3-300 strips plus PSU (didn't measure actual input), so something around 60 W on 160l tank. I grow easy (0.3 W/l) and medium (0.5 W/l) plants in that tank, no CO_2. Again, sometimes it's like "comparing Pears and Apples". As you mentioned in the other post, tubes don't last that long. I recall they also lose intensity over time and cannot be dimmed. Another thing is going low-tech and being smart about planting, whatever light is on top. When I started my 714l planted tank, the plan was no CO_2 injections to limit the consumption, so I picked two 72W LED lights (older model, no RGB tweaks, but dimmable with yellow-tinged light). Deep dirted sand/gravel bed, crypts and val in darker corners, shorter plants close to the front and window (no direct sunlight). Even Althernatera Reinickii 'Rubra' grows relatively well in that tank. I put Rotala Rotundifolia under most light and Marsilea Hirsuta on leftover aquasoil. Still, I cannot grow Hygrophilla Pinnatifida there at all. Also some areas are darker than others, which would disqualify it from any attempt on true Dutch style or iwagumi.
@@PaulZyCZ I think the comparison in all fairness is not just about Lumens per watt, T5s get very hot, but they are big Lumen providers, great punch and good spectrum available. CFL which I used to use a lot are literally 10-20% less Lumens per watt than most LEDs, some specialist aquatic LEDs promise a lot of Lumens, like you have some reservations. I have a 250 litre tank, never been able to grow Rotala Macrandra for a prolonged period with LEDs without approximately matching the T5 wattage I would have used. Indeed I always found standard old fashioned T8s grew all plants with CO2 if the spacing was one tube for every 4 inches of surface width on a tank not deeper than two foot, allowing of course for two or three inches of substrate. Standard 4 foot tank, 4 T8s worked well, 3 T5 worked and for me, with LED bars, 3 would work but I like punch from spots/floodlights. Currently I use a 66 watt Dennerle, plus two 50 watt outdoor cheap floodlights and a 52 cheap aquatic branded light. Take off just one of those lamps and pearling is much reduced. All in all, for Dutch style planting I have found the Tropica 1 watt per litre for tanks of reasonable depth about right almost regardless of type of light from LED, T5/T8, CFL. For crypts only or Java setups, half the lighting will work certainly with yeast CO2 - solenoid and timer control are great in Dutch style tanks to keep the fish alive but lower continuous CO2 from Yeast and Sugar I think actually is better for most plants especially if using the light siesta arrangement. Take the tank the temperature down to 18 degrees and grow only Vallis, Hornwort and Egeria, emergent plants and lilies and things become easier again, though I personally would still want to keep things balanced with around 10 ppm of CO2 with a yeast and sugar system. That would be 'green' tank, a sort of Walstad plus. Almost natural and low in energy consumption both in terms of electricity and human work.
