- Design fault on MacAllister MSHP2800D-2 Shredder from Screwfix or B & Q etceasily corrected for £1. Ware to get spare parts. Design fault corrected with a £1 - 90mm M10 Couch Bolt !. Taken in 4k
Note you do this at your own risk
Don't forget to get a 90mm full length M10 threaded bolt or coach bolt, the reason for 2 nuts on is I don’t know exactly how much of the cutting plate will be left when it gets to the nuts touching the locking nut, so at that point I will take the end plate off the machine and have a look if there is enough left to take one nut off and carry on using it or to change the cutting plate
So once you have got your 90mm bolt screw the 2 nuts and the locking nut on and the machine is running, keep turning the bolt clockwise until you feel it scraping on the cutting block you should now see long thin strands of aluminium in the box, at that point still keep hold of the bolt and tern the locking nut clock wise to lock the bolt in position. Later that day and you have sent a lot threw it or the next time you use it you may have to tern the locking nut anti clock wise and the nut clock wise to take some more shavings off followed by terming the locking nut clock wise to lock it in position. Good look.
BOLT STICKING yes just had that experience 31 Mar 21 It would only move slightly in but not far enough for the cutting plate to catch the cutter and would not screw out, so I un plugged it and tipped it on its back tuck the front plate off with the allen key supplied (note the allen screws are fixed to the front plate) I took the cutting block out (remember it cuts anti clockwise) it wont work the other way, took out the cutting plate & cleaned it out, noticed the bolt would now screw in but not out, (as I didn't touch any thing by the nut that holds the bolt in, next time if I want to wont screw it further just jams I am going to tip the shredder on to its front then on to its back lightly taping with a hammer near the bolt to se if it loosens what was stopping it from terming.
GETTING THE BOLT OUT !!, The reason the bolt will not come out is all the time it is running the cutting plate is banging against the bolt, this is similar but not as bad as when you rivet a bolt
by cutting into the end of the bolt with a saw 1 cut vertical and 1 cut horizontal then hammering the end to stop the nut coming of the bolt, so you are getting this hammering action onto a soft bolt, If it was hardened steal I don’t think this would happen but normal bolts are mild steal, so what's the solution to get the bolt out, you have 4 options Keep turning the bolt whilst (1) filing or (2) grinding the end edge at 45 degrees, Or a (3) grinder cut last 4mm of bolt thread at the end off, then try and unscrewing it with a spanner and WD40 keep turning in both directions for woods and back woods a bit at a time (the nut will be working as a tap) (4) try just spanner only not recommended by me as the nut will then be a lot slacker. Not tried any of the above yet or whether a small grinder will fit in as I have still a lot to take off on my cutting plate, but all should work.
NOTE
If my bolt is the correct length to use up all the cutting plate, I will not be taking the bolt out, just unscrewing it back to take a new cutting plate.

24 Jun 2020 Just received Pressure plate fits perfectly, exact same size only difference is the tale bit sticking down at the bottom middle on the original is not on replacement, I don’t think that did anything may have bean put on to get round copyright law!!
Screwfix support says on 10 December 2018 "These has the same blades as the TITAN TTB683SHR 2500W 200KG/HR GARDEN SHREDDER 230V (6887P)."
For best video picture playback quality use Google Chrome or Firefox. Set video quality in cog bottom right of video to 2160p 4k. If you find video stops or jumps that’s due to your broadband speed or computer is not fast enough try 1440p HD or lower.
Nice to see someone who understands how these shredders actually work instead of blaming the machine for their own inability to understand the mechanics. Power to your elbow Derek.

Thank you for your reply with the info about the newly ordered pressure plate. Without having that info I may have sent it back thinking Solent had sent the wrong one. I will be purchasing the coach bolt tomorrow and have an old broom handle for the plastic “ truncheon”.

What a fantastic fix! I noticed the problem pretty early on - running out of adjustment - and tried to glue something to the adjustment bar but of course it didn’t work. Even bought another shredder to see if there was something wrong with mine. There wasn’t so I took it back. Anyway am now out to workshop to find a bolt and some nuts and have already ordered my replacement adjustment bar for when the time comes. I hate it when things aren’t fit for purpose. Thank you so much. I can now look forward to many hours of happy shredding!
I’ve sent mine back buying a Bosch my old einhell was much better I find the macalister bit difficult to store and I think the motor runs too fast and it is geared down high speed low torque the Bosch is brushless motor low speed high torque much quieter… saying the the Mac is okay I’ve nowt else to spend my money on

@@UnseenSpirit I had a einhell was great however I forgot to cover for the winter I bought the Mcallister and after watching the video I returned it . I think it would be okay I went for the Bosch ax 25 a awesome machine the Bosch is three times the price. The macallister was okay I misunderstood and I was using the screw up wrong for the aluminium block . They are all good but only the quiet type with the sacrificial aluminium block. I’m a bit of a power tool snob. It’s on offer at screwfix £130 ish no problem returning

Wish I has seen this first Derek. I returned mine I bought yesterday Nov /14 /2021 Still the same fault. They have not acted on your findings it seems. Here is a copy of the review I left. I don't know if they will allow it.
I was looking forward to using this machine advertised as a Shredder.
But there is a fundamental difference between a shredder and a chipper.
A shredder will shred green plant waste and leafy plant waste.
A Chipper will take care of branches and stems from trees and such.
The more robust kind of waste from pruning trees and shrubs.
That will Cut them into reasonably small pieces. To be used as a mulch.
They are fundamentally two different kinds of blade set up
This machine has a circular cylinder blade set up with a number of blades on it.
The gap between the blades relates to the size of the chippings.
It is the blade that pulls the item to be chipped into the machine.
This process works fine on rigid material such as branches and twig size material to a certain size.
The problem with softer greener waste such as leafy material is two fold.
It will send that waste through and into the bin without cutting.
Or it will wrap itself around the blade.

Spare parts are still in issue with regards to the pressure plate.
Derek has a link on his video with regards to a replacement.
Now don’t get me wrong it is not a bad machine if one needs a Chipper.
The instructions state that if you need smaller chippings you can run the first cut material through a second time.
But if you require a shredder for softer leafy material this is not the one for you
So I had to return the one I got to the shop.
As it is not a Shredder it is a Chipper.
Yes there's a difference.
So overall rating I gave it 4 stars because as a chipper it would be a Good one.
For value I gave it 5 stars because as a chipper it is an excellent price.
Features 5 stars because it has some excellent ones as a Chipper.
Performance only two because as a Shredder as advertised it is not
Reliability only 2 because it still has the same design faults that Derek A Wilson pointed out

Just seen this and was about to order a new plate and adjuster from Solent.. My MacAllister is about 2 years old and had run out of adjustment, I have all the parts I need in my stash of bolts and will use a 180mm coachbolt with locknuts and the blue locking ring, the last 80mm of bolt will be bent at a right angle to make a sort of handle.
My previous Gardenline shredder did 10 years hard work but eventually the pressure plate wore right out and the adjuster bolt made contact with the blades, sadly spares not available now but the MacAllister is just as good if a little noisier.

For the money, it looks a decent machine. I read on the Screwfix website about this plate, and was a bit concerned about how long it would last, but after seeing your video I went ahead and purchased one.
Shame Screwfix don't have seem to have any stock, so I bit the bullet and managed to find one at B&Q for £130.

Great idea Derek: I had simply left off the locking collar to gain extra length on the pushing screw, but your bodge looks more robust!
I think this is a fantastic machine for the money and I am on my third (replaced under warranty after I had managed to break it...)
How did you manage to brake 2 of them? What went wrong with them?
without locking nut on and original thread bolt with the vibration will unscrew itself making the machine useless. It will work screwed in to its maximum in but to do that you will have waster about 10mm of scraps
Hi Derek,
On the first machine I had, the thread went on the lower left hand bolt securing the faceplate/blade guard, which operates a spring-loaded safety cut-out: I was able to fix that myself with a longer and slightly bent bolt, but I saw no downside in getting a new machine under warranty as I had been using it hard for about 6 months and with two replacement counter blades.
The second incident was rather more dramatic: a particularly large and hard piece o wood caused the machine to jam and fractured the metal chamber containing the cutting blade: I then had more difficulty in getting the next machine under warranty because of covid restrictions, and even began to wishh that I had kept the trusty original...
So far I am treating the new one little more kindly, but of course there is still the two year warranty!
Interestingly, as I only remove the locking collar when the no further adjustment is possible because of the shortness of the adjusting bolt. it then holds sufficiently firmly not to need the locking collar.
By the way , I enjoyed your helpful video and have forwarded the link to a friend in Spain who is interested in getting a garden shredder: however, without B&Q or Screwfix, I am not sure whether he will be able to find one of these.

Nice one, I'd run out of adjustment but didn't have a bolt but had some threaded bar and a dome head nut. Works just the same and I cut it down so I can't accidentally wear it down too much and catch the blade with the bolt. It's given me an extra 10mm of wear

I'm on my 3rd machine in less than a month. First one was great proper little chomper but then the thread on the counter plate blade stripped and jammed so couldnt undo it
I took it back to SF and the staff member was fantastic. Offered me a refund or a replacement no trouble at all orbeit I was s little concerned the same thing may happen again as the bolt just isn't strong enough. I took the replacement as I still had work to do.
I took the replacement and literally 20 minutes into working the adjuster knob stopped turning and jammed... I was so frustrated as the machine really does a great job at shredding.
I took the machine back two days later and again explained what had happened. The staff on this occasion couldn't have been any different. The assistant looked at me as if I'd done it deliberately and question how it had happened. She hadn't git s clue how the thing worked but clearly thought I'd done it deliberately.
I asked if I could have one from another batch as possibly this batch had a simple fault of a dodgy bolt. But I was informed she had no idea how the batch system worked. I really didnt want another only to bring it hack again in s week or so with the same issue but still has 6 conifers to take down. Eventually she brought a replace6to the counter and opened it up before I even agreed to take it. She then insisted on checking the counter blade knob showing me it worked before I took it...
I'm only hoping now the same thing dont happen again and gave even purchased a replacement m10 bolt from another supplier as I just done feel the bolt supplied I'd upto the job...

What makes the cutting plate bolt jams (wont turn by hand) is when you are shredding wood bits of it get jammed in the side edges of the cutting plate (jamming it up after a while) so it is now two tight to tern by hand.
As per video you should have changed the bolt for a M10 bolt as the one supplied is two short, so once you get to this stage use a spanner to get that extra leverage to tern the bolt clockwise to reset the cutting plate. The other alternative is to take the front plate off take the cutting plate out and clean round it and put back together every time it happens.

Really informative to see precisely how the mechanism used by these silent shredders operates.
I've been looking at garden shredders to replace a Bosch 2200 impact shredder whose motor failed.
We've gone through so many impact shredders over the years, so am looking for a more durable design.
Spotted the Ozito 2600W Silent for ~£100, which looks to be a very similar design to this MacAllister (which is now £150).

Yes there is a note on one of my replies some were not ha to do it myself yet, take the end cover off + cog and plate off screw bolt in as far as you can & cut the bolt end off, if you cant get in to cut cut the outer part of bolt off at the threaded point and screw in off by screwing it into the inner compartment (the plate banging against it as riveted the bolt end) then take bolt out

Didn't find the fault you are recording mine seems to be fine with the bolt supplied so maybe they upgraded it

Mine filled up with detritus in the motorbay and destroyed the brushes which looks as if it's damaged copper rotor :( Will only know when spares arrive

I got a machine like this passed onto me as part of an inheritance. 4 yrs old and never used but out of its box and very dusty.
I plugged it in and the blades move painfully slow. To the point the blades jam even on a dry twig. From listening to your machine in your video the sound comparison of the revolving blades is incredible. Mine makes a very low rumble where as yours is ready to take off.
I can't find any help anywhere and was wondering is it to do with the blades being unused or what I'm not sure. Total newb to all this machine stuff too so forgive my ignorance if I left anything essential out. Do not have the manual either.

Most helpful information. The link to solenttools was very useful. Just ordered the pressure plate from them. Is this pressure plate supposed to wear out with use? Mine looks like the blades have been trimming it thin until it was too thin and had to break.
Yes the pressure plate is only aluminium so it helps keep the cutting cog from going blunt, every time you reset in pressure plate screw in for the cutter to catch the plate gets thinner, when you send a few thick piece of wood threw that also wares the plate away creating a gap between the cutter and the plate, so you have to tern the screw in so that it will shred small pieces.

Though I can't understand why you were forcing the material into the shredder as it self feeds most of the stuff feed into it and you are only stressing the motor by forcing it in.
If you notice I am not forcing the branches in, the slot on the shredder is oblong with a wider point at one end, you have a to hold it if it is a long piece like I was demonstrating or the machine will tip over the feed is making my hand go down with out any force you’ve got to keep turning the branch so that all off branches line up with the oblong opening or it will jam up, plus there might be a bit of the branch before jumping around in the compartment, then you are pushing that down to allow the branch to start. Note there is a automatic over load and reset on the machine

Yes it is a design fault I have told Screwfix head office part of B&Q Kingfisher plc who import this products about this problem them, but they have not replied. I have put on screwfix website in all the Q&A - answer section for MacAllister MSHP2800D-2 a link to this video plus a reply to the questions.

Yes Use the allen key supplied with it to take the front plate 4 allen screws and the front plate off, take the cutting block and the pressure plate out, screw the bolt further in and at the same time use a weir brush on the thread to get the small chippings and sap stuck in the threads off once you have got the threads clean all the way round the bolt should come out by hand.

Great video. Why does the pressure plate wear so much? Could it be a concern that the pressure plate could become in danger of being smashed into bits if you wind the screw in so far that it becomes really thin?
The cutting rotary blade is maid out of hardened metal and the tips are sharpened similar to a saw the pressure plate is maid out of aluminium and is designed to eventually were out, if the pressure plate was maid out of metal the cutting blade would be blunt in minuets, so you have got 2 things wearing the pressure plate away, thick branches going threw rubbing against it and the other is having to very slightly adjust the pressure plate screw until you feel the cutting blade taking a slight shimming of aluminium of the plate.
I only adjust mine at the start of using it if I have put some big branches the last time I used it or looking in the chippings container it has not cut them properly.
The cutting blade on mine is slightly oval shaped so I only feel it cut the plate in one position on the rotation of the cutter but that’s ok
To get it to braking point were the bottom bit drops into the basket will take a long time and before that it may make a lot of noise flapping about, see details billow video were to get a new cutting plate, but to get it to that stage you need to get a longer bolt as soon as possible mentioned in video, reason every time the rotary blade is cutting something against the plate with plate the plate is flapping it is held at the top, it is hammering against the soft steal adjusting bolt, that is like riveting/hammering the thread/head of the bolt so to get the bolt out by filing or cutting the bolt out, see my details billow video

I used a 90mm bolt because I already had one, 80mm should be ok as I put a nut on mine to make it shorter, until I have kept turning it and scraped down my cutting plate down to nothing I will not now what the exact bolt will be.
Does anyone know the dimensions of the six bolts that attach the main unit onto the base please. I've just bought a used one and these are missing 🙁

Thank you for the video it was most informative. Having just purchased an earlier MSHP2800D in an as new condition by appearances I had been having a bit of trouble. Your video showed that the pressure plate was missing the hooky end, opposite the black connecting bar, and I have just ordered a new one from Solent. Have you put out any follow-up videos since June 2020.
No not put any more videos under "How to" since this one, I presume you have got 90mm M10 bolt or coach bolt on your shredder, your new one will not have the hook bit on the bottom but it will fit the machine
The hook on the pressure plate I cannot see it rely doing anything, might help in reverse to get bits off, it could be there just to get round some other makes patent.
The next one I will be putting out is how to set up a Car Paint Film/Coating thickness Gauge about 6 people have had a go at demonstrating it on RUclips, but haven't read the instructions on how to set it up to be accurate, it took me a while to work it out. So all 6 have said its cheap so not very accurate
Disco my shredder has started chewing up the motor with a burning smell I'm thinking it needs that coach bolt cause the plates aren't close enough any more ?
That's what the video is all about the bolt supplied with it is two short for the cutting plate

If you are talking about the blue reaming locking nut on the bolt no don’t no were to get one, just use a ordinary M10 not and a spanner tern spanner clock wise to lock and the other way to release or a M10 wing nut and a longer bolt.

Did you have any trouble removing the original threaded bolt? I have been unable to undo mine. It will only retract up to a point and then it just tightens up. Any thoughts?
I had no problems with mine it turned freely anticlockwise. Could be you have got some chippings on the thread inside try turning the locking nut anti-clockwise until it tuches the plastic bolt cover then turn the both clockwise until it wont turn no more then try turning it anticlockwise to see if it will come out. If that doesn't work get the allen key supplied with it and take the aluminium panel of the front and the scraping plate out to see what the problem is with the bolt

For what it’s worth I think over enthusiastic tightening of the original bolt might have warped it a little at the end, making it impossible to remove by hand. I popped off the plastic adjustment cap causing as little damage as possible which revealed a head I could get a spanner on. Just got to source an M10 in lockdown! Thanks again.
@@hardlands I have exactly the same problem. The adjuster jammed pretty solidly fairly soon after I got it. Looking at the bolt on the inside it looks to have been distorted and the tread damaged presumably by too much pressure from the plate. The gap is now about 1 to 2mm so shredding is not all that good and leaves do choke it up frequently. I’ve just about mastered getting the leaves back out but I had a major jam with a piece about 15 mm diameter and the machine cut out. Resetting didn’t work and I spent an hour or so chiselling out the jammed wood. I think the failure to restart was muck in the safety switch in the cuttings box. It’s going again now but I need to find some way to get that bolt out and replace it. I put an adjustable spanner on it an managed to move it a couple of turns but now it won’t move at all. The locking ring moves freely though. Presumably if I lever off the plastic knob as you have done I will be able to turn it with a spanner but I might have to screw it in first and then somehow saw off the distorted part before I am able to screw it out.

I did't seem to pick up what's happening here. What difference does the new bolt make? Does the machine shred better as a result? Shred smaller? Thanks.

@@derekawilson2118 Hi. I just watched the beginning again. I get that you say a longer bolt is needed and it seems that it needs to be longer to push the pressure plate nearer to the cutters?? So it shreds smaller? I can't actually hear you say why the longer bolt makes the difference. Does it affect the cutting?
How did i take out original bolt? Cut ot with saw or.?
No Just slackened the locking nut by turning it anti clockwise then turning the same way took out the bolt

Read the manual. Turn the outer knob counterclockwise, then the inner one, and there is no need for a couch bolt.
Watch the video from the start. Soon you will find the bolt is fully turned in after not so many scraps you will look at the cutting plate and see hardly anything has been taken off, the bolt is two short to ware the cutting plate down fully, that the reason you need a longer bolt.
Not a design fault, just planned obsolescence and poor quality. Derek, I thought your fix was good enough for me to overcome my instinct against buying MacAllister Chinese junk, but I should have stuck with my instinct. You have found a problem with the product and come up with an admirable fix, but the inscrupulous Chinese are already ahead of you. :-( Bought one of these today, intending to apply your "fix", but the threads on the adjustment bolt have been crimped at the end, so it can't be removed and replaced with the 10mm coach bolt! Not only that, but the bolt must be shorter, since its reached the end of travel, has stopped cutting fine twigs and has only worn 0.5mm off the plate! Having spent less than 2hrs "shredding" with this piece of junk, I'll be out with the Dremel tomorrrow to cut off the "redesigned" even shorter bolt so I can apply your fix! Hopefully that will make it work properly.
Are you sure they haven't sold you a used(now 2nd hand) cleaned up by purchaser that was returned within 28 days of sale for money back or job dun or both, as the bolt gets shorter and crimped when it is used ?
@@derekawilson2118 Well I can't be certain, but it looked brand new when I assembled it so they couldn't have actually shred anything with it if it was a return. Anyway, the Dremel didn't work, but the multi-tool and a new metal blade cut the crimped end off the bolt to allow it to come out. So now I have installed your fix, with my own minor improvement: a 75mm wheel from B&Q wedged onto the square end of the coach bolt to provide easier adjustment. Adopt, adapt, improve. ;-)
I had the same problem, but approached it slightly differently. I removed the adjuster, then removed the inner ring and reinserted the adjuster which allowed for an additional few mm of adjustment.
Eventually the pressure plate will wear so thin that it breaks - replacement blades can be bought from here for about £20:solenttools.co.uk/product/solent-tools-pressure-plate-compatible-with-macallister-mshp2800d-2-shredder/
