My ear kept being drawn to one of the layers. The feeling in that layer is hard to describe, but it sparked my imagination. I've been thinking about nanomachines and robotic insect armies ever since.

I thought I was doing something different with this one, but inevitably went back to the tried and true collage approach. I wonder which layer you are referring to, as there are so many. There is a layer of drums which I processed heavily using a phaser as the base. And a ton of melodic recordings as well. There are also some snippets from a conversation I had with a stranger at the last music show I went to. I am in a transitional period of sorts, and looking to refresh my methods of music making, so this piece came out a little scattered and incoherent. Simply put, I feel like it has no flow, but I still like it. I was telling Mr Marten that hopefully my future work will be a bit more accessible and linear. It's interesting how difficult breaking from old habits can be. I am taking lessons from Four Tet and his last album. He seems so open and free, I find it beautiful. Thank you so much for taking a listen and your words of encouragement:)

@@tiadiad I find it so difficult to write about my musical experiences. If we were driving in a car listening to this song I could say, "Oh, this part - that little 'deedle deedle dee' - that's what I love!" The layer I referred to makes a solo appearance at 2:06. (That might actually be the percussion sound you're talking about) But although it really only lives in a section of your piece, it provides the lens through which I see the whole song. Sort of like Tom Petty's "You Got Lucky" is defined for me by a certain style of bending a note on his guitar during the chorus.
I think I may know the kind of transition what you're going through. I don't really like the approach I have been taking in my own music and I keep hearing a style creeping in that I wish I didn't have. I keep asking myself if it's just rehashing the things I've heard in my youth or is this my baseline personality coming through? I have been listening to The Smile a lot lately and appreciating Thom Yorke's way of creating new music. It doesn't really sound a lot like Radiohead's Pablo Honey but there's definitely a genetic relationship. How does he do it?
I'll be listening to your work and taking cues from your evolution.

It sounds very spacey and otherwordly :)

Thank you so much, Mr Marten! I overworked this one I think. Kept adding to it and taking away until this materialized. I will try to let my tracks breathe from now on.
