Watched this yesterday. As a mostly defensive player trying to learn to be more offensive, this clicked for me. Played today, recognizing when I was offense - and thought and played like: here is my opportunity, even my obligation, to be offensive! Quite helpful.
this is really good. Ive notice some of the people I play with, they attack from defense, rather than drop, buy time, re-establish kitchen and neutral position. By attacking from defense, your partner is likely in poor court position and if your attack doesnt prevail, you will likely lose the point fast.
Hi John, Love these keys and also like your Ready, React, Execute and most importantly Improve. The only suggestion I have is i have asked many students as to why they hit that particular shot. 🤔Often there’s not a good answer. So using your model i would teach 1. Ready 2. React 3. Read-like a quarterback. Where are they, where’s the ball and quality, and where are we. 4. Execute- based on read 5. Improve Thanks, TQ
Every decision? Well it didn't help me decide what outfit I was going to impress Grandma with during rec play tonight, but it was still very good info and explanations. Thanks for sharing, I guess....🤣
This is harder than it looks. The first time I viewed this, I hadn't committed to playing a 3rd shot drop; my confidence in my accuracy was non-existent against stronger players in good position. Since then I've improved my drop until even a rushed, low, outside backhand from the baseline lands in the kitchen half the time. Now that I'm playing my drop routinely, I'm getting into these situations routinely, and the danger signs for slipping back into a defensive posture are becoming visceral. As a result, this video lodged much deeper in my psyche this time around.
I’m still new, but disagreed on the half volley view. Maybe it’s more true on pro level and above. But half volley speeds up a dink if placed correctly-more appropriately worded as disrupts timing to certain level players. Every advantage helps and being predictive isn’t always one of them.
I agree! I’d rather half volley and send it back low and deep than take a step back to let it bounce. I guess it always depends on your opponent and level? Maybe half volleys just dont work at higher level play?
Hey John, You're doing a great job, I've been watching you for quite few months and I like your videos. I'm wondering if I can be your video editor? I can edit the longs as well as make shorts out of them. Waiting for your kind response ❤
thank you. I have to review your most recent video once more. if you do a future video with point breakdown, could you talk a little about different options for when the exchange goes to neutral? I find myself hitting the balls that land in the kitchen with no pace or little pace really challenging and I mainly hit them into the net. my thought is, I should try really hard to not hit it offensively but then am overcompensating and hitting the ball way too soft. should I treat that ball as if I'm on defense and try to hit that towards the middle of the court (mid line) and shallow in the kitchen? I feel like that is what I see men doing on dinking exchanges a lot (hitting very shallow balls that are not attackable)
So can someone explain why in a 'firefight' like at the end of the video, you stand your ground at the kitchen line and fight back, but other times you back up to be in defense mode and give yourself more time to react? Seems like contradictory advice.
Very situational, but angles are important. The further you back up, the more angles the opposition has. The converse would be, the closer you are, the less angle options. Hope that helps.
Didn't get a good feel for what "offense would be like.. Hitting at the feet.. Hitting to Backhand side.. Push at Paddle side shoulder.. Dink to middle... Etc., etc...
One example I got was that offense starts when you speed up the point successfully and they have to move back. And dead dinks provide opportunity to do so. And what you list are good strategies too if the chance arises.
Hi John! I recently stumbled upon your ProXR paddle. It seems to check a lot of boxes for me. I mainly play singles. To avoid elbow pain, I need a head-light paddle. For 2-hand BH, I need a long handle. And I play with lots of topspin, so I need spin potential. But I see that you recently left ProXR and went to Selkirk (none of the Selkirk paddles work for me). So... even though you left ProXR, do you still like and recommend your signature ProXR paddle? And why did you design it the way you designed it? Thanks! Tom

This is it!! The best. All you need to know! But remembering when in the heat of play is the skill required ! Great job, John!!
Yes! Thank you!
JOHN, this video is the best advice instructional video shared on RUclips yet!! Thanks million!

That was a good match. Probably one of the best of the tournament.

Thank you so much! its is very much appreciated
I didn't know you could fit a pickleball court into a storage unit.
How could we use pickleball as a tool to break out of our bubbles and empower community & economic development?
Well said!

Can you talk Spinshot into doing a Memorial Day sale? 😅🙏
Ok so taking a step back of the kitchen line is less defensive than a half volley?
Is this in a warehouse, I need this setup for my business!
The coupon code for the spin shot machine is not working at the moment. 🤷♂️🧐🤷♂️
nice video
What is your take in the dink master?

Looked at these myself out of novelty, ultimately the design just doesn’t work not high level play since you give up so much leverage

Excellent my friend! What a gift you have. GOD, Guns & Gumbo
It looks like there's a dead guy off court at 5:19, bottom of screen.
Pickleball is rediculas
Why does everyone complicate such a simple game.. 😂
Because it isn’t simple when against players with as good or better volleys than you
Simple to learn, hard to master. For me being at like a 3.5 or close - sometimes preventing unforced errors is a plus for me. sounds simple enough.
Great stuff
