Buying a house in Sweden! ⠇Week 1

- Опубликовано: 12 фев 2024
- Welcome to this channel I created to document my lastest and greatest adventure: leaving my lifelong home of Southern California for a very different environment in rural Sweden! I bought a house right off the bat, and in this video I'll give you the first tour.
A little tip, sorry if it's too obvious. But don't shut the radiator in the smaller house off just yet. Our weather is very unpredictable this time of year and there's a risk of frozen, burst pipes. Also, about wet rooms: It's actually illegal not to have them. And forget insurance if you don't. I absolutely love cleaning the bathroom. I just hose mine down with the showerhead, scrub and rinse.
With him turned it off it's a good advice becouse he seem to not know it
Absolutely. Never keep rooms/houses/whatever that have water pipes below freezing temperature.
Also, if the place gets below 15/16 degrees celsius the house will be damaged by the cold. Even if you leave for a vacation etc, the house needs to be above that temperature.
@@charliekoohler4774Well you can also use a dehumidifier, then it’s ok to let the temperature go below 10 C.
Good advice for someone from a warm place like California. Might not know the risk of turning off the heat, so please pay attention to this tip. Keep a minimum of 15°C I'd recommend.
Congrats! I’m a dual citizen of Buffalo NY USA and Sweden!!! Lived there 1997-2009 in Borlänge and moved to Buffalo again with my Swede and our son in 09! Moving back to Sweden in the future.
Välkommen till Sverige!! You look soooo happy and excited!!
If you want a swedish book tip, read The Emigrants by Vilhelm Moberg. It’s a novel series about swedes emigrating to U.S in the 1800s. It’s a beautiful portrayal of swedish spirit, and you might be able to recognize yourself in their situation, although your doing it the opposite way and for other reasons 😊
Cool, thanks for the recommendation!
Swedish houses are built to insulate from the weather and due to the cold and wet climate combined with the insulation our houses are at risk for mold. This has lead to hard regulations on water and heating inside. There are alot of built in fail safes to prevent water damage and mold since that is extremely hazardous to health. This includes among other things, the "sealed" wet rooms.
I have mold allergies, so I'm very happy about it :)
Hi Devin! I am Jonas and live in Sweden, RUclips recommended your channel and that house of yours is awesome, i clicked on everything when i heard your voice and your optimism, keep up the good work.
You are so welcome to Sweden and Scandinavia, brother. I hope you will enjoy our grounds and enviroments. Nice to have another nice soul here.
Looks nice :) A small advice, don´t turn the radiators off completely, the house gets mold if itś under 13 degree celcius
Welcome to Sweden! It´s so heart warming to hear your reactions to everything here. Go, go, go!
Welcome to Sweden! Kalmar is nice especially at the summer. Tip: Visit Karlskrona super nice naval city.
As to answer your grass question: the grass stays green for of a few reasons. The snow acts as an insulator so the ground doesn't freeze and the sun doesn't bleach the grass. The grass also starts growing as soon as the snow starts melting. Grass has evolved to always keep the blades full of chlorophyll so it's ready to produce energy the moment the snow starts melting.
Cool, thanks for the science lesson :D
In the Tinker Bell movie "Secret of the Wings" they figure out that they can save the plants by covering them with frost😁
Welcome to Sweden. Based on the boiler room you have water based heated flooring in the main units. It's not unlikely that they've chosen to extend that to the garage as well, cause the garage is definitely designed to be heated. You also have an error code/warning on your boiler. Since the system seems operational it's likely just an error code that needs to be cleared, then the status light should revert to green. 🙂
I had the exact same reaction.
I have the same air to water heat pump in my house. The error could be something as easy as changing the air filter or opening an inlet valve for about one second to increase the water pressure in the system.
Hej! Congratulations! You're gonna love the transition in daylight hours for the next month and a half--it starts changing so fast
Thanks, I hear springtime in Sweden is the best!
Welcome to Sweden! Just wait to the summer kicks in and you can pick strawberrys and stuff =) Really nice home for a cheap buck!
I actually did stumble upon that video seeing your face. I’ve been watching your videos yeeears ago, crazy!
Enjoy Sweden, I’ve spend a year there studying. Great country.
Congrats! Looking forward to seeing all of the home parts prints and the evolution of your new maker space ❤
Hi Devin! Congrats and welcome to EU!!! If the garage get colder in winter, just think about a pallet oven! Is a good and better solution to such space! Take care!
I appreciate the suggestion, I'll look into that :)
Lovely home!! Congrats🎉 I have been researching Sweden and Norway for a few years now and really want to move there, badly! I was born and raised in S. Long Beach (hey neighbor!) I follow many RUclipsrs that live in Sweden/Norway, and you're the first S. CA transplant I've come across. I look forward to following along on your adventure and getting a Californian's perspective on the culture and lifestyle in Sweden. Enjoy your new home, ❤ Diane
Awesome! I'll surely be comparing my new and old life a lot, and answering any questions I can :)
That's a pretty unique house, I don't think I've ever seen a semi detached/double unit house like that here in Sweden before. 😀
It must be really nice to have your sister living so close to you, I can imagine it gives a sense of safety and belonging that would be difficult to attain in a new country otherwise.
Btw, that black auger thing in the shed looks like a tool that's used to air the compost. Usually, you need to turn a compost so you get oxygen into the center (otherwise you will get growth of anaerobic bacteria that smells horrible), but with an auger like that, you just screw it down into the compost and pull it up to create air pockets all throughout the compost heap. 😊👍
Thanks for the tip! I hear composting isn't allowed in some areas so I'll have to look into it a bit more, but it would be nice for the garden :)
Gonna have to ditch the sq.ft. and adapt the m² now! Congrats on the house!
But I like using the bigger number! 😜
@@skapaallt mm² ;)
SOLD! @@TurboSunShine
Wow🤩 what a nice house you bought, Congratulations Devin🌻 I hope you feel at home in the new place soon. But it's wildly exciting to explore a new country and explore other people's culture. It's nice that you have your sister close, it makes everything more safe and cozy for you. She knows the country well after so many years. I look forward to seeing your interior design of the house, now I myself am someone who loves colors and cozy pictures and things, There must be soul and a reflection of who you are. Many homes seem like a housing catalog that everyone else has and everything is the same. Love to see people's personality shine through a home.
Hope you have got good neighbors and a community that sticks together and does something together. I wish you the best going forward and I hope you are feeling better after this nasty bout of illness.
Take care and good luck with everything. Many hugs Maria from Denmark🦋🍀🌷❤😊
Thank you Maria! I often battle with myself about going very colorful and wild with my decorations or keeping it clean and 'elevated'... But I will certainly find a way to bring my personality forward :)
Välkommen till Kalmar! Jag hoppas du kommer trivas i ditt nya fina hus 🥰🇸🇪
Välkommen till Sverige! Blir kul att följa dig och dina projekt framöver
Divinity!!! I’m so proud of you and hope I can visit! The house is incredible and so perfect for you. So so excited to follow along and see what you do with the space. ❤❤
Thanks Brilliance!! (Just came up with that one lol) You're always welcome 🤗
At least you got lights with your house, the previous owner took all the damn lights down in mine... :D Welcome and hope you enjoyed zooming through my village on the train ;)
Welcome to Sweden hope you settle in. Come next winter I would invest in a heat pump (luftvärmepump) instead of the radiators. Depending on whether or not you have 3 glass windows and ceiling height of 2,4m it could save up to 50% of your heating costs. Even though Sweden is a net exporter of electricity the prices fluctuate a lot depending on the situation on continental Europe. Best of of luck to you!!
The main units have a heat pump, just not the attefallhus 👍
Omg Make Anything! Välkommen to Sweden! i used to watch all your videos on 3D printing back in the day. Hope you enjoy it here! the winter months are ROUGH
Congrats on your new home 🎉
Your sister must be thrilled to have you living so close to her now 😊
Welcome to Sweden. It will be a joy to join the journey. I'm on.
I hope you're love our beautiful country 🇸🇪 💜 🇸🇪
Welcome to Sweden 👍

Super cool that you have your sister with you over there!! Beautiful property!!! Congrats again Devin.😊
Thanks Krizia! It's been really exciting :)
Hi Devin, how come you moved to Sweden? What are your plans? Have a good start and I'm excited for future videos...
As a Swede i from Småland, thinking this will be the channel for me, Welcome to Småland Sweden
Welcome! Still don't get why you moved here, except for coming closer to your sister? Would love to hear the full story, life in cali vs the one you are searching for in sweden etc. A bit deeper.
Welcome to Sweden :) Beautiful house!
Hej Devin! Welcome to Sweden, Kalmar. I was born in Kalmar. Now Ilive outside Stockholm. I will for sure follow you. 😀❤
Kalmar has a lot history to explore.
Välkommen till Sverige! Congrats to your new home! 🍾🥂 ...Will be looking forward to see your upcoming videos! Take Care!
I guess one of the first items when the spring comes will be a robot lawnmower.. Soo good.. One of the best purchases. 🙂A big welcome!
Welcome to Sweden! The house looks very nice!
The house is BEAUTIFUL, it's like my dream home layout too
You must buy darkening curtains cause the summers are bright at night. Your sister will guide you 😊to a good store.
Welcome to Sweden, hope you enjoy it. Thought the price where abit high at first but the double unit could make you live almost rent free, depending on area pricing. Looks good though. Im intrigued so you get my Sub, hope to see some 3d printing and crafting.
As I wrote on your "main" channel - So happy to have you here in Scandinavia. Hope that they great you well in my "nabo" country. ;)
Välkommen till Sverige! Fantastiskt fint hus 🙂👍
Congratulations on your new property! I also bought a place in Sweden two years ago, and it is always lots to do and new things to learn. I´m looking forward to seeing your progress in Kalmar!
I can’t wait to follow in your footsteps! These Swedish house listings on social media have me in a chokehold 😂. Hoping to go back to school in Sweden ASAP!
Welcome to Sweden, Småland, Kalmar län! Greetings from a city/town neighbor (Oskarshamn) I hope you will enjoy your new house and your life in Sweden. Good luck with your 3d endeavors and feel free to ask any questions!
Allt norr om Lund är Norrland. Men han behöver inte veta sådana teknikaliteter just nu.
A Warm Welcome to Sweden and Good luck! 🍀 🌟
Congrats on the place. And on the great video. Can't wait to see more.
Wow! Welcome to Sweden! Great adventure to just move! I just did the same but only from Stockholm to Malmö. Good Luck with everything!
Welcome to sweden.
In july on Öland on Lundegård camping we have a danceweek with traditionell swedish dans fox and bugg and some westcoast swing. Can be a fun thing to see that tradition of dancing and met people from all of sweden that goes there. Week 27
Fun :)
Welcome to our beautiful country 😊😊
Welcome to Sweden! Very nice house. It's interesting to hear about other's experiences of my country, now also yours.
Welcome to Sweden bud! Hope you´re doing really well now! Awesome video to watch! That´s a gorgeous home you got! Congrats!
Oh wow! Welcome to sweden! ☺️🇸🇪
Hi. I know Kalmar well. Also an American/ English born living about 2 hours from you in a town called Hultsfred, Kalmar County.
Love to see it and I'm very excited to see what you do with the place (as well as seeing the beautiful surrounding)!
Welcome to Sweden! Kalmar is a nice town. I think. Always pay a visit every summer when we're going to Öland.
Me also visit Öland every summer but allmost never able to go to Kalmar. Little far without car when stay on Lundegård thats still a but up from the bridge.
@@AnniCarlsson ah... jag har aldrig campat på Lundegård faktiskt!
Congrats on the new house and the big move! Very exciting. I've had my eye on Sweden for a few years. Seem like a beautiful place to live.
I met you once at an event at Matter Hackers years ago. Sorry that I probably won't run into you at any other OC 3D printing events, but happy for you and your new adventures!
Nice, I hope you will enjoy. Even if the climate is probably not what you're use to. And remember we Swedes are reserved to the point that we could perceived arrogant. But it's our nature I guess to not mind others buissness. You have to continue to try to bond with people and finaly it will pay of. I hope you will suceed.
I live in a small swedish town Fristad.
Wow. Quite a lot for the money, especially compared to Cali. It’s beautiful. Congrats and good luck on your next chapter!
Congrats to your new beautiful house Devin ❤
First impression was that $300K for the house was a bit much but when you revealed that you have a part you can rent out I actually think it was a pretty good deal. Good having you in the country! Hope the winter didn't do too much of a number on you. Summers are beautiful!
Nice! Congrats on your new house and new adventure
Your property is amazing! I think I'm about to issue myself an invitation. lol I've always dreamed of living abroad and have researched sooooo many destinations over the years. Now, you have me wondering about Sweden and it sounds like a great place for expats. I am so excited for you; I think the stars are aligned in your favor. I hope you will take us along to Gettlinge Gravefield at some point. As someone who lives in a colder climate without a garage, I hope you don't miss having a space for your car. Thank you so much for taking us along on this adventure!
Thanks! Hopefully I can document lots of adventures. I actually walked though Gettlinge Gravfält when I was visiting last summer but I wouldn't mind going again 😁
@@skapaalltWell, hopefully you can capture the residual Viking energies! A videography challenge for you!
Lovely, oh so lovely🇬🇧
Dude! This is so cool! Congrats Devin!
just sumbeld on to this video, but i am alredy so exited to see you jureny!! (i am from sweden)
Wow Congratulations on your new home I did just stumble on this thanks to RUclips Recommended.
glad to see you seem to be doing great bro.
Congrats!
By the way. Our coins do have a reference on them, the 1, 2, and 5 have symbols meaning sun, wind, and water as a homage to the Swedish Singer Ted Gärdestad and his "Sol, vind och vatten".
Have a great day!
That's pretty cool! 🌞
Welcome to Sweden! The house looks great!
Welcome to Sweden 👋! I hope you'll like it here!
Hi Devin!
If you turn off the heat compleatly in attefals house, the wather can freeze och the pipe can break.
Just lower the temp.
Yes, I've heard to keep it at 13 degrees, thanks! 👍
Welcome! Kalmar was a good choice, with öland so close at hand it is pretty awesome.
Fint hus! Grattis! 🙂
Det verkar välskött!
Oh what a nice surprise! I lived on Bornholm for a year (Danish island South of Sweden), now back in the Netherlands. Hope you get to learning the language fast as that seems to be the least nice thing about Nordic countries (they frown upon English for some reason). :) Jealous of the place though, way more quiet than where I live in the Netherlands.
Welcome to Sweden, greetings from Orsa
Congrats Devin. I'm so excited for your new adventures.
Security tip: Better don't show images of your keys as you did around 21:00. Keys are shockingly easy to copy with just a photo of them.
You know, I thought of this but brushed it off... then I realized how much I'm swinging those keys around so thank you for the tip. I've blurred them out now
I love the video. You bought a great, great property. I can't wait to see more videos.
Welcome to Sweden man! Lived here all my life and love it, but it is going to take some getting used to coming from California, but I am sure you will manage just fine. I just have to say Make Anything is my favourite RUclips Chanel with the perfect mix of entertainment and learning. It even inspired my first purchase of a 3d printer and I am working on some creations soon to be released: Cool that you decided to come to this little corner of the world. Keep doing what you do man, I think it does a lot of good. Probably more than you know :)
Thanks Fat Guy! I appreciate the kind words, and I'm enjoying Sweden 🙌
Welcome to Sweden and Kalmar
Very nice Devin!! Wish you all the luck! :)
Nice property.
Just a question: who put the couch in front of the window? In Sweden as you will learn, the most important thing in the house is the windows and keeping them clear. That is because of the lack of light in the winter. Look arund snd you will see there is not even curtains in many houses…
Ahh, I was wondering why all the houses have exposed windows :P
Welcome and good luck. I also live i Kalmar by the way.
Cool video 😊 greetings from Skåne
An idea is to rent out that smaller house in the summertime. You can get a few extra kronor in your pocket.
Beautiful and you got a lot for the money!🎉
Whaaaaa this is insane! Congratulations dude !
Looks like some fantastic property with great possibilities for passive income.
Welcome to Sweden! 😃
Welcome to Kalmar, Sweden! And congrats on getting such a nice house/property! I just stumbled across your channel here on YT and felt my jaw drop when you said you now live in Kalmar. Since I live in Kalmar as well I was trying to see if I could recognize the area you’re in but I have no clue even though I’ve lived here most of my life. Again, welcome! 😊 Kindly, Annicka
Very nice home! I wish you much luck. You can find furniture second hand.
Cheap houses here. On the countryside. Easy living. Just take a tour in east side of Småland..
Welcome to Sweden!
Welcome. I hope you will enjoy life here in Sweden and make a lot of friends. Life here will be different. But you will learn to love it 🙂
Welcome and good luck
Welcome to Sweden. I was like, huh, did he pay 300K for that little room? And then you showed us the other buildings that you got for the price, 2 units, 1 guest house? + garage, not bad at all.
I moved to Sweden as well in 2010 (paid a LOT less for mine) but that's the reason I moved here, it was simply cheaper than Norway and Denmark (where the prices are INSANE).
The thing you'll notice with California VS Sweden is that you no longer will have 300+ sunny days ,you will have basically 200+ dark, rainy, grey days and if you're lucky 3 months of summer.
I like how the only thing you brought with you was basically your Sound card and the Nvidia FE edition of your graphics card. Gave me a chuckle there. I remember your situation, what I brought with me was one foldable chair, an inflatable mattress and a movie projector. And there I was, the first day in my first house - sitting on a foldable chair in an empty echo of a house, watching "The Burbs" on a white wall. Oh the memories.
Good luck with your house, fun days to come. At least your yard looks cleaner than mine, mine was basically a forest in the middle of a small city...
The GPU is keeping my house warm though! 🤣
Funny enough, my projector just barely missed the cut because of it's weight, but I may have someone bring it soon... the weather does suit movie nights. The summer heat in California was sometimes too much for me, so at least for now I don't mind the cold and grey.
@@skapaallt So watcha gonna do with the other part of the house? Rent it out and let the renters pay the mortgages? Sounds like a solid plan to me.
