I was just talking to a friend about this problem with the pulse earlier today. We would both hear it the way you *don't* want us to hear it. I think it comes from a lifetime of either counting rhythms in sync with the pulse and vice versa, or generally counting odd time signatures in groups of two and three rather than over a steady pulse.
another great movie and amazing track in the end !!!!!! Thank you so much. !!! Maybe in the near future you can make a movie about creating our self composition? or maybe IM wrong with this? :)
Yngwie 2000 is one of my favourite IA-songs ever! It's been playing in the back of my head for so many years. I really appreciate hearing the story behind the song! Tell us more stories behind your songs!
Maybe its because of my complete lack of traditional education concerning music, but before counting the pulse with triplets it felt very comfortable alternating between down, and subsequently, upbeats in the rhythm. Too much primus, probably. These videos are a terrific boon to a rhythmic buffoon like myself. Thank you for your continued charity, Mr. Eklundh!
Sorry that I've not heard of you before but I just have to say that song at the end is fabulous. Edit: I checked out Freak Guitar and for what it's worth you have a new fan. Great work!
Yes! New video by Mattias, counted the triplet example correct in my head, recognized Jen Majura in the "Freak Audio Lab" and even got a song as a reward. The day starts great. :D
I love how twisted this 3+3+2 sounds to my mind when implemented like that :O I guess it's easier for me to think of it as a pattern of 8 over a pattern of 12 so every three 8-patterns align with every two 12-patterns... which actually makes it some weird fractal-like 3 against 2... :D
Part of the problem why many young guitarists lack a sense of pulse is because few of them spend any time practicing rhythm, and instead concentrate 100% of their time on fancy soloing techniques. Switching to acoustic guitar and playing rhythm for a year or so can do wonders to one's sense of pulse. Also listening to a wide variety of music really helps (latin, funk, jazz-swing, bossa nova, etc.).
24 is a wonderful number. Trying to hear it both ways and switch feels between both is a great brain exercise. EXTENSION TASK! This same thing but 3+2+3
whenever i watch Mattias, I wonder if I should cry because of his profeciency or laugh at his jokes ... Luckily, they are not are mutually exclusive. Cheers.
For even more fun, you can ask people to clap the time, stomp the triplet pattern, then sing 5 or 7 on top. Eventually, both 3 and 5 will land on 1, as all patterns do.
I never asked myself the question about that song, is the tempo / pulse always the same all along ? I don't think so, even though it flows naturally as I know it by heart. Dammit I never analyze signatures in songs, I just listen and try to play them because they sound awesome. I think it's more important for me to feel the "groove" by heart, make it flow in my blood, rather than cutting it into compartments. It's something I have to do when I work with other musicians, but otherwise I never do it for myself (besides fun curiosity sometimes). I remember friends freaked out because of Evil Shower being super intricated, with weird rhythmic stuff in it. It was completely out of my understanding, I just liked the funny melodies and was more intrigued about the guitar sounds I couldn't replicate (cause dildo and open tunings throughout the album).
Speaking of dildo solos, you're credited with the solo (specifically for the dildo) on the Soilwork song Machine Gun Majesty from their 2000 (recorded 1999) album The Chainheart Machine, and whilst I really love the dildo section for the EVH vibe, it's all the solo leading up to that bit that I've been dying to know how you played for the last *TWENTY* years!!
I cant get over the JVC tower speakers in the background! Does Matts actually use them? You could buy sooo many of them for the price of one Caparison, but you'd have to visit every Goodwill in the US...
I do use them! Even got two pairs! I have plenty of high end speakers... that I don't like it all. When I get the sound right through the "living-room"-JVC-speakers mixing my brains out, I know I am right. Lo-fi works!
On the actual physical CD (and in the included booklet) he is credited as Mattias "IA" Eklundh, so someone probably just wrote that wrong somewhere on the internet. :)
Everyone has been listening to Periphery for the last ten years and wants to do polyrhythmic nonsense all the time, we want it to be more complicated than it is because it makes us feel smug, hah!
I have no idea what's happening and that's why I love Mattias.
3-3-2 it's such a common rhythm in Argentina, and I love it! you can hear it all over tango music :) cool video!
aah con razón, me pareció raro que lo había identificado bien cuando mostró el bombo solo al principio jaja
This guy is simply Great...!
Really GENIUS...!
i will watch these videos 3 times in a row. Three is the key!
Meshuggah and Steve Vai in a blender = Mattias
This is pretty accurate.
He kindof surpassed Vai with a few lapses though
Woow Hammer geil dein Yngwie tribute bonus track! Ha! Good to have royalties.

Der Matze, so witzig und vor allem ein wahrer Berufener👾. Großartiger Künstler und Mensch. Now translate that 😅
I really enjoy you.
This is the true representation of this digital age: I don't understand a single thing he says about rhythm, but I'm still watching and enjoying it.
super, mattias. big encouragement from a long time fan in Ontario, Canada!
Thank you so much for this invaluable information! Please keep posting!
Cheers from Costa Rica sir.
Mattias! You are a great inspiration. Some weeks ago I talk about your work on a radio in Argentina. Sorry about the bad english. I LOVE YOU.

I'm primarily into guitar based music, but with exposure to Indian music , I could hear the pulse he was referring to.

My friend you are on a different level. I watch your videos and say uuuugghhhhh like 87 times every 5 minutes. Amazing player
Comment for yt's algorithm visibility. Matthias, love your musical universe.
You make a “tresillo” song sound metal! So cool! This rhythm is African but very popular in the Caribbean ...
Maybe its because of my complete lack of traditional education concerning music, but before counting the pulse with triplets it felt very comfortable alternating between down, and subsequently, upbeats in the rhythm. Too much primus, probably.

Amazing as usual! Thanks for the tutorial
Hejsan svejsan Mattias(på Skånska) Nerver heard the song Yngwie 2000 before, really liked it!!
24 is a wonderful number.
Trying to hear it both ways and switch feels between both is a great brain exercise. EXTENSION TASK! This same thing but 3+2+3
And then 2+3+3… and then 332x3, 323x3, 233x3. FUN
The 3-3-2 is also commom in eastern european music, I believe - Karanfilce Devojce immediately came to mind. 3-2-2 also common.
God damn Mattias, I wish you were my guitar teacher. I have learned more in these 9 minutes than in the past 9 years 🤣😂
that moment when you learn more about drumming from a guitar related video rather than a drum video.
also: "FRIIIEEK OADIO LÄPP"
This is great - never stop Tubing!
I don't play this style at all but you always make it interesting
Dude's a genious.. I do this all the time about timing

Here in Brazil we have something called "swingueira", which some times uses this 3-3-2 time signature.
Reverse RUclips? You do not want to see what I'm doing, trust me
You have a beautiful singing voice lol.

Move-album turning 20 years in couple of years, any plans to do touring a bit for it? (y)
Holy fuck, that track was magical

Sorry, my feet moves with my hands ... I can't separate the timing on both sides.
But will continue to practice!
Try to play catch with yourself but with your weak hand.
It'll make your brain work that side at least that has kind of worked for me.
@@mrdrprof99 Thank you for the advice. Will sure try it out!
Ooph!
not guitar related, but which software are you using to do the split screen?

Doctor whoish. But i do respect your work
Clocks by Coldplay has the 3-3-2 rhythm
Were you credited as Mattias 'JA' Eklundh on Yngwie 2000? Google seems to think so
On the actual physical CD (and in the included booklet) he is credited as Mattias "IA" Eklundh, so someone probably just wrote that wrong somewhere on the internet. :)
I swear this is the most complicated thing you've ever written, shit
Yngwee 2000? More like Vai 2000, amirite? :D
Sic

Please make a video of many instances of yourself clapping polyrhythmically like some weird pagan ritual
Pretty sure you're my dad.

Very interesting vid. I clapped like european disco music tho. Sorry ;)
Wishy I was in school so I could count to 3, fortunately hindu people invented their own method for me, great :)
An interpretation of something so subjective as art, to be considered as wrong? Laughable.
Ha.
