  • This is an exotic SB 302 build that uses a variety of parts match only to the cylinder they are intended for.
    It is being built for both output and show. after being completed it will be sold to the highest bidder with the proceeds going to Saint Jude's children's hospital.
    though intended for a good cause the tech to be learned is none-the-less to sort of stuff that virtually all hot rodder's will go for.

    Mr. Vizard, your content has completely changed the way I will be building my next TURBO engine. With the rough engine size in mind, I will be buying Heads first, upgrading to larger Exhaust valves, getting flow numbers BEFORE buying/ordering a camshaft, then continuing to build the rest. I love your content and have learned alot.

    I haven't seen a block with the lifter galley painted in over 30 years. Old timers did that after hot tanking their blocks so oil flowed better, dirt didn't cling to the cast iron, or some story like that.
    Harley used to paint the insides of their motor cases because the aluminum castings were so porous, they would sweat oil thru. Red electrical motor paint IIRC.

    My veiw... torque plates do not simulate a running engines heat signatures, heated chamber distortion, and are half thought attempt at fixing something inadvertently designed to distort...but leaves out the operational variance. The bore takes a diff shape bottom, middle and top when up to running temp..then consider heat spikes. In general..things wear in... the bore will take shape with wear and whatever distortion is introduced. Cooling and reheating after start up, now think about that in why they say take a leak down test HOT. Thats what the torque plate leaves to be desired. Why not try..yes, of course...but let's paint the entire picture as to not misrepresent the diff between what we are attempting and the end result. As always, I very much enjoy your tech,stories..and appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and opinions with the masses.

    • @bcbloc02
      @bcbloc02 2 года назад +2

      Agreed. Would have to have a dyno comparison between an engine honed with no torque plate and one done with to see what the power difference was and more importantly for a street type build the test would need to be done on both identical setups after 500hours of runtime so things have had a chance to settle and break in as much as they are going to.

    • @DaveMcLain
      @DaveMcLain 2 года назад +1

      Leakdown tests are generally meaningless. After all you never run the engine at zero rpm. Bolting on the bell housing, motor mounts and especially the intake manifold on one of these engines all add some distortion to the block. Still using a torque plate gives better results than not using one for finishing the cylinder bores.

    • @DaveMcLain
      @DaveMcLain 2 года назад +1

      @@1WILDsMoPARtech I think that there are many many factors involved some of which can be accounted for and some that can't. Hot honing sounds interesting but it also sounds like it might make it tough to gauge. Then what does it do with an aluminum head vs one made from cast iron. The running engine vibrates and flexes the block around as the load changes from one firing impulse to the next. Having everything machined as nicely as possible has to help but there's probably a point where you can machine it more accurately and it just starts to not make any real difference. Maybe a lot of the reason why newer piston designs which are easier on the cylinder walls and ring sets that are more flexible help power is just because they can still manage to work reasonably well when everything is being thrown out of whack.

    • @marvingvx1
      @marvingvx1  2 года назад +1

      Dave, You are right on the money here. While doing a championship deal in the UK developing and driving a Cosworth Sierra we tried hot honing and it showed no gain in power. We also measured block distortion under full power conditions. The distortion could have been measured with a wooden rule!

    Do you finish hone the cylinders for the rings you'll use like Total Seal reccomends? In other words, if the rings are molly or cast iron, do you shoot for the proper oil retention in the cylinder, proper peaks and valleys for those rings?

    • @KimiWallrus
      @KimiWallrus 2 года назад

      According to Total Seal and many engine builders on the total seal podcast, the cross hatch and break in is everything. Cylinders don't break in over hours of running in a good engine and or does the cross hatch and rings wear hardly, according to a lot of smart people.

    • @MrTheHillfolk
      @MrTheHillfolk 2 года назад +1

      @@KimiWallrus total seal told me alot of this back in 03 when I had em do a set of top gapless for a VW TDI-m build.
      They requested a ring sample ,and afterwards asked me to scare em up a set of oem rings as they liked the quality.
      So for 30$ a hole back then I had top gapless rings and they worked great.
      They should darn near seat up in all the turning over that happens while building it
      (that's a joke)
      Or within about 5mins of runtime you better have loaded em enough to seat them, otherwise they probably won't.
      That thing barely made a leak down tester tickle the needle after 10k and a 20k mileage test.

    • @DaveMcLain
      @DaveMcLain 2 года назад +2

      Yes. I'll hone the cylinders and finish them by plateau honing. This allows the bore to be smooth yet still keep the deeper scratches(RvK) to help retain oil. I check this using a profilometer and sometimes adjust the honing process to get the desired finish.

    I am old school for 'There is no replacement for displacement.' I must have HDADDOCD and get stuck on the SBC 400. The 350 is nice, but the 400 can go to 468, but I get the feeling that 427/434 CID is more logical. Most shops in the area try to talk me out of the 400 block and stay with the 350. This is mostly because of the local oval track displacement limits. I was in the zone with an 850+ HP SBC 400 outlaw dirt track drifting at 90 MPH and faster. Nothing like the thrill of coming out of a corner sideways and pulling the front tires!!
    I was in a bad car crash and had 7 surgeries delayed for 9 years, and soon after a bad heart attack with hypoxia that wiped out most of my memory, though some has been returning. Do you have any dyno data for a 427/434 SBC for street capabilities with an automatic?? Yeah, I like a manual, but a machinery operator for decades, I think my left leg is 2 inches larger than the right from operating a clutch and pedal steering for decades. I am curious to know if the newer 8 or 10 speed auto's have any advantage over the 4 speed auto or even the 2 speed Powerslide (old school term - the new term is drifting), I mean Powerglide??

      @@marvingvx1 I don't have the data any more - ex had destroyed a bunch of my documents - but I am curious to know the flow of heads with 220 cc runners could flow enough for the 468 SBC or if the 245 cc would be needed. I haven't crunched the numbers yet, but will the SBC heads flow enough through the bowl for the 468 to achieve 6000 to 7000 RPM? At 7000 RPM that would be 947.9167 (948) CFM. Probably when I crunched the numbers decades ago intake runners were only 180 to 220 cc. That is why I was considering to stay with 427/434 CI range. The 468 would be a torque monster! I like sleepers. I told everyone that my 406 was a 305.

      Reminds me of a guy that had a 429 Cobra Jet engine that asked me " Do you want to see my motor?" Enthusiastically I said yes. At the time I was a high school student. He popped the hood and said, "there's a motor" pointing at the wiper motor, then pointing at a blower motor. Around 1977

    Does anyone even bother with the 5.0 anymore? Why would you go through all this trouble when you can have a real engine like the 4.8,5.3,6.0,6.2 cheap. can we move on from the 90's please?

      Maybe because they need a smaller and lighter engine for their application.

      They are still very much in demand as is the know-how on mods for them.
