I read a chess book about opening attacks from the library once (pre-internet) They featured a classic game from about 100 yrs ago where mate in 8 was announced. The king was walked across the board and castle was even used for one of the checks. It was the first time I saw how beautiful chess came be.

For me it was too difficult. Didn't get any, but I had the right idea on most of them. I can't visualize that many moves ahead in complicated positions like these. The shorter mates in 2 or 3 at the end of each puzzle were doable for me. I'm about a 1500 on a good day, and 73 YO. Maybe this wasn't a good day though.....I think my limit is about mate in 6, and I'm sure I miss lots of those in my games.

I don’t think I could ever be sure enough to announce a “mate in X” in a game. Being wrong would be too mortifyingly embarrassing haha.
Great fun though, I had a couple right, I was on the right lines with the calculations, but would often miss a potential move 4 or 5 moves in, where it would then deviate from my thinking. I find keeping track of where pieces will be in my mind so difficult.

17:58 If you change up the move order, this is a valid gambit response for white to the Frankenstein-Dracula Variation. If 4… Nxc3, then white is playing a reversed Stafford Gambit up a tempo.
As for the puzzles I missed 1 and 6, got the last two moves wrong on 2 and 4 (positions got fuzzy in my head), and nailed 3 and 5.

I missed calculated the 4th one with all the knight moves. I had all the right ideas for the 5th one but couldn't string it together. I was just wondering, wouldn’t the second one be a mate in 2 if pawn takes e6 because no matter if the bishop or rook takes back, which is forced, the queen could go onto h5 because the knight is pinned?

  • @cameronrogers333

First one could have been mate in 7 rather than 9. The last 4 moves where it’s paused, instead of moving pawn h3, white could move king f2. Black king then couldn’t move. Then pawn h3 is checkmate.

The game of presentation (where you said "Exemple: I say it's checkmate in 3") is wrong as the knight and the bishop could block, making it checkmate in 5.
Let's go now with the guesses!
1st one: Mate in 5 moves.
    Got Wrong.
    Bonus Question: h3+ Kg3 Nf5+ Kxg2 Bd5 (... 0-0-0)...?
    I don't have it.
    Oh. Wrong knight move.
2nd one: Mate in 10 moves.
    Got it!
    Bonus Question: g3 Nf6 Rh3#
    Got it!
3rd position: Random guess: 9 moves.
    Bruh.
    Bonus Question: Kd7 ...
    I don't see checkmate in 3, I only see checkmate in 2.
Oh, now I see why "3".
    Final answer: Bd5 Qxd4 Ra5+ Kg6...
    That's not mate in 3.
Oh. I was so close on one of my first thoughs.
    4th position: 7 moves.
    Got it!
And I gave up the bonuses questions.
    5th position: 6 moves.
    Wrong.
    Last position: 8 moves.
    Got it!

    I got 4 correct.
The second one I did see the King returning to g6 after Rf5+, but I kinda disregarded it as "doesn't matter" for some reason.
The third one I was gonna say 7, and while you said "the correct solution", I noticed my mistake, paused and calculated further for the correct 9.
The fourth one I gave the right move-count, but calculated incorrectly. I said Nxh2+ instead of Ne5+ on move 5.
The last one I got confused in the line Ke7 Qf7+, because I kinda saw too many options. I had no idea what to do and didn't even guess a number...

This was fun! I got some of them purely on instinct (like the mate in 8 on one of them)
I could give more effort in calculating it out, but I guess those muscles aren't as developed yet, still get unsure of how to proceed etc.
Another commenter said they would enjoy the shorter checkmates but with more interaction and responses from the opponent, i like that idea
It is good to do hard stuff like this to really stretch those muscles though and see what you can do!

I solved number 2: mate in 10, this morning. Took me about an hour. You don't gave all the side-lines. You should! Funny enough, the only little detail I missed was that Black can play 1... g6. I thought 1 ... Nxg5 was the only legal move.
This is not the first time that I calculate a long line, but miss something trivial in the first few moves. In this case it's just mate the next move, but in my own games, I have lost several times after calculating a long line (well, not 10 moves, but 7 or 8 moves) correctly except for a small trivial detail - not at the end of the variations as you would think, but in the beginning.
