Funny how everyone is astonished at the 6 hour length of this final opera of the set, but when you experience it you want the entire Ring to begin again the following day. The Ring (first seen in Seattle 2009) was not only the greatest opera/theater experience I ever had, but was one of the top 25 experiences of my life!
To all Ring Cycle fans the DVD/BluRay recording of the 2011/2012 Metopera Leparge production becomes available Fall 2012. Having just spent the last two weekends watching this at our local cinema and now feeling quite exhausted especially after today's Gotterdamerung, I am definitely looking to the autumn release on DeutscheGramophon and available from the MetOpera shop but will for sure be on Amazon. Happy listening
Saw "Wagner's Dream" and the four Ring Cycle operas in Robert Lepage's new production over the last two weeks -- LOVE the machine and LOVE this new production which seems to me to better match the glorious singing and Wagner's glorious music. Wish that someone would upload the entire Siegfried's death scene as sung by Jay Hunter Morris in Gotterdamerung. It was so beautiful, heart wrenching and poignant. I love the forge song but love this scene much more. PLEASE!
YES! Plus it isn't even 6 hours...it's 4.5 plus intermissions. It's such a stunning legacy of everything Wagner as a genius worked for, there is no filler!
Aside from the fact that the new Met Ring is stunningly staged, sung, and acted, with musicianship of the highest order, the new DVD or BlueRay Ring video set has production values that make it desirable: a 16x9 format fits my TV, video resolution will be excellent even if DVD instead of BlueRay, the sound *should* be great. I only hope the sound engineers have eliminated the occasional nuisance noises from the Machine and stage noises. I just ordered the BlueRay set from Amazon.
I was glad to see this in the theatre, with a great cast and concept, but most of all for the decision to actually have Grane the horse personified onstage rather than having the singers address an imaginary presence. It worked for me.
@BlackAcesBlackEights Many sporting events are nearly as long, plus you have poker games, time spent in online gaming, time spent on Facebook etc. Opera is good for the mind and soul!
6 hours? who cares... It could be 8 hours and just be that much more beauty. (Most operas (even the ones I really like!) I get sleepy the first hour or so because the 'good' stuff is often held up til the last half. There is not a dull minute, as far as I'm concerned, in the this entire 6 hours. Wagner is absolutely riveting from minute one til the proverbial fat lady sings).
Btw, saw it at the met today. It isn't 6 hours. It's 5:45... Including TWO over- half hour intermissions. Actual opera time? 4 and a half hours. 6 hours = lie.
Lepage is not an opera producer. He is at his best at Cirque du soleil or the likes. This whole extravaganza of technology had nothing to do with the Ring. Just watched the Chéreau-Boulez production which makes this one pathetic. Of course, in true US fashion, it was very costly so it had to be good.
You don’t know what your talking about. You more than likely didn’t attend to any of it. We were at the premiers to all four operas. They were magnificent.
We were at the premier of this amazing Ring. Opening nights to all four. Beautiful experience.

6 Hours? It's 4 and 1/2 hours. Plus two intermissions. You will only surpass 6 hours if you do it Bayreuth style and do 1 hour intermissions. ;)

Saw the HD Simulcast yesterday. Laughed out loud when Siegfried gave the Rhinemaidens a goofy grin and waved at them. JHM is so cute.

Can't wait to see it in HD!

Thanks to Brian Slater for the info!!!! I've only seen this particular segment of the opera but i ADORED it. Wow!!!!
Thank's Mr Lepage !!
The only problem with Wagner's Ring is that it's too *short.*
Now I want to see it again!
Why if it's too long does the audience walk away from the theater wishing it was longer?
I was glad to see this in the theatre, with a great cast and concept, but most of all for the decision to actually have Grane the horse personified onstage rather than having the singers address an imaginary presence. It worked for me.
I agree! The horse is so important!!!! Without it the ending just sort of falls flat for me sometimes.
Truly spectacular!

Doubt it, KaleidoscopeAct. Technological feats aside, the Met's new Ring is very much of a traditional production. So Wagner can rest easy.
@borisgrishenkorublev well Rheingold felt longer because there were no bathroom breaks!

@xrylon don't expect trailers to highlight the worst scenes. LOL

They show Grane! I lolled!
first. :)
Die Erkenntnis, daß es immer noch schlechter geht, ist schon erstaunlich!
Was wäre das Internet ohne seine Berufsnörgler?

Worst Ring ever.
Never ever! Not to me.
Wrong! We were there at the premiers of all four operas. They were amazing.
