Ive said it before and i’ll say it again. “Minecraft Spinoff” as a concept does not work. Minecraft, by its very nature, cannot work exist as a series of games. Its best left as a standalone product. Im genuinely shocked dungeons did as well as it did.

Dungeons did so well because the Dungeon Crawler gameplay loop is really engaging and fun. Additionally, Dungeons offered a more laid-back, casual take on the Dungeon Crawler style when compared to other top selling Dungeon Crawlers, allowing it to be picked up and enjoyed by most people.

I think there is more merit to a spinoff working. It'd just need to actually commit fully to whatever genre it is. As pointed out in the video, Legends is a weird mix of a beat em up and a tactics game. And from personal experience, Dungeons is kind of what I'd infer a watered down diablo to be. I think, at the very least, I'd want to see a spinoff that tries to go for a more "mature" level of skill in the gameplay. Either way, would definetly say that Legends does not live up to being THE minecraft strategy game.

    • @orange_turtle3412

@@22XERO22 I think dungeons worked because its more so a completely unique game with the minecraft IP slapped on, rather than a minecraft game. They could have just created a dungeon crawler with an original IP and the game would be relatively unchanged.
Legends, on the other hand, feels like it was created for the sake of making another minecraft game. Dungeons was dungeon crawler game first, minecraft game second. Legends is minecraft game first, whatever genre its supposed to be second.
And minecraft story mode (rightfully) failed because “minecraft” and “story mode” are essentially polar opposites that cannot coexist.

Eh, Minecraft Dungeons also has its substantial sum of issues, so Legends being a failure wasn't unexpected by the metric of big spin-offs that part of Mojang worked on. What's more surprising is the fact that the Dungeons team went into that project with basically zero experience in making a diablo style dungeon crawler, whereas the Legends team was in part a studio that specializes in RTS games, which one would have thought might balance things out. Then again, Blackbird Interactive were themselves also split between like 3+ projects at the time, so there's that.

I also think that they have honestly run out of ideas for new games as well, as the lifespan of each games starts to slowly shrink and shrink, and Legends was definitely a big drop. They should honestly listen to the community more about making Minecraft a better game instead of making spinoffs of other games, because I think everyone here agrees that we need all of the mobs in the mob votes to be added into Minecraft.

I will die on this hill that Minecraft Dungeons will forever cement itself as the greatest MC spinoff to date. it was fun, quality, has an amazing set of visuals and sound design, the music was amazing and the gameplay loop was addictive. Of course it had issues, the equipment based gameplay hindered it and that all the new content was locked behind a paywall, but it was still fun enough for me to get every DLC.
*However* they refused to update it and let it die, I will never forgive Mojang for that. They legitimately had a second money printer in the palm of their hands, the game seriously was a fun dungeon crawler for fans of MC and could get people interested (specifically younger gens) in other dungeon crawlers.
They just had to add these things:
    - Add a skill tree
    - Provide less FOMO content
    - Give us some Multiplayer aspect (like the crucible from destiny where to you dungeon crawl stuff and fight each other)
    - Give us a custom dungeon builder
    - Provide actual endgame content for us
    - Produce good modding tools for the game
Just those 6 things, the entirety of 2 studios just had to give us those 6 things and the game would've been self sustaining for years, and yet they didn't. They instead added a shitty tower with a battle pass, ended support and advertised the 'whole new MC experience' they gave up on us for.
And all of this, the betrayal of thousands, maybe millions of players for what? A broken, mediocre, half-hearted experience. I honestly have never felt so back-stabbed from a company I loved so much. I still play normal MC but I won't be playing any more spinoffs until they either commit to a update cycle that at least lasts 4-5 years for a game or at minimum gives us ample content that isn't rushed or feels heartless.
    Just disappointing.

It's weird how immensely flawed Minecraft Legends is as an RTS, considering BBI, who collaborated with Mojang on this project, specialize in that genre.
The only playable faction is the Overworld; the units don't have upgrade paths, you just replace them situationally; the singleplayer being one large open world with no true failure condition means you can just grind up resources and overwhelm obstacles like that, which in some places feels like the intended strategy, mind-numbing and tedious; unit interactions come out to just a clash of numbers rather than strategy with few, if any, counterplay inherent to their design, leaving only evasion in the form of micro managed movement; and the terrain has a shockingly small impact on player strategy in most cases due to how easy traversal everywhere is and pve stealth just does not exist.
And the action part of this action rts is similarly barebones, only providing a single, simple melee attack and fairly standard traversal means, the only element that can be functionally customized, which are all that set the player apart from just being a grounded, unit locked version of a standard rts camera.
And Minecraft Legends did have potential to be way better in all those aspects, especially with the theme of uniting the overworld against the hordes of the nether. Those could have been like three whole factions on each side and the overworld ones could have easily given the player more varied quests than defend and/or attack, showing the personality of each faction more. For the player, different weapons wouldn't have been a crazy suggestion either, like a heavily trimmed down version of the Minecraft Dungeons selection with only one equippable at a time. And if we want to give the players creativity, the different structures are made of blocks so letting players rebuild them for their own cosmetic touch, with some restrictions to still keep the structures recognizable, would've been doable too.
As with everything Minecraft as of late: A lot of potential left on the table for no discernable reason.

some notes i want to clarify that ticked me off in the video,
steam charts for minecraft legends are very likely the lowest source of legend's playerbase, as steam is usually reserved for more hardcore gamers while most casual minecraft fans either use the minecraft launcher as its the only way to launch java edition, xbox because of gamepass (albeit gamepass syncs with the launcher so its technically the same) and the other consoles off of pc played by a large children audience
while i do think that a comparison can be made between the decline in popularity and playerbase, using steam as THE playerbase is a tad bit misguided but makes for a good visual for a short video framed in the style of a documentary, which i think looks pretty good btw :)
secondly, saying that spinoffs take the place of others as they die is a correlation that doesnt actually take into consideration outside factors
story mode was produced by telltale, and after the poor sales of season 2 of story mode the entire company bankrupted, with some rights given to netflix to maintain for a bit before vanishing off the platform which surprisingly leaves it with little if any methods to get all of the content legally since telltale's servers are all down so you cant purchase the dlcs unless you bought a console ultimate edition
minecraft earth was developed by blackbird interactive similarly to legends, but the servers were shut down when covid hit and when it finally loosened up the interest in the game was gone and the team then worked on legends
it wasnt because dungeons replaced them, they died on their own time
speaking of dungeons, it was developed by double eleven unrelated from anything else and was discontinued after it reached its final conclusion with content updates and dlcs, and while it could be argued it could go on for longer, it ended without compromise
legends is still ongoing with small hotfixes every now and again with some bonus side adventures you can download every other month (i havent played legends for a while fyi, i just couldnt get into it. fitting, right?)
sorry for the rant i just really wanted to clarify some of the development of minecraft spinoffs because its really interesting to see where minecraft, given the funding to do whatever they really want, try to attempt with the brand

A huge problem Mojang has is that they think they sell their products only to kids that are bad at playing videogames that require some sort of skill. That is why Legends and Dungeons were so easy and boring to play because they had no real challenge. But in reality, kids can be more skilled than some adults if we just take a look at Fortnite or the boy that just beat Tetris after no one could finish it after 30 years!

Tbh Minecraft legends just feels like a game that’s kinda meant to be played once get enjoyment from and never play it again till like maybe a few weeks or months later. All these challenges and somewhat of a lackluster major update “Ik it’s hard but I feel like more could’ve been done”. Don’t really work as much.

Certainly doesn't help that the spinoffs are pretty much standalone from the main game. Like there's zero tie in with the main game that could help generate hype, they could add a mob or something from the spinoff game into the main game to help advertise the spinoff, rather then how they do do it, in that you can tell the spinoff is related to minecraft since it pulls alot from minecraft, but there's nothing in minecraft which shows that it's related to the spinoff. If they had added something like the red stone golem into minecraft at the same time that dungeons released, it would help generate traffic for dungeons by giving the main game players a taste of what dungeons had to offer in terms of combat. For legends they could've added in the yellow Allay, and have it gather resources like in legends.

They did something similar for Story Mode during the era of Legacy Console with a skinpack that featured characters from the game with custom models. That is the only thing besides Glow Squid that is in the main game that originally came from a spin-off. The new Relic disc features the melody of the Minecraft Legends theme, but that is not the same as putting the Yellow Allay or Plank Golem into the main game.@@zackbauer4562

I feel like repetitiveness would work if it was in the context of a tutorial mode/level instead of the full gameplay, and I think if they did that, it might fix most issues besides the game being too easy. Also, I think MC Earth was discontinued because of covid to be honest. And, like someone else said, MC Story Mode was discontinued because it's parent company (Telltale games) shut down.

I think the biggest issue Minecraft Spinoff games face is the fact that there's really no need or reason to have them. Minecraft is a wildly successful game and it is that way not because of expansive lore, amazing graphics or complex gameplay - Minecraft is successful because it's a sandbox world where there are no objectives. Yes, Minecraft does have bosses in the forms of the Wither and Ender Dragon but, those bosses are entirely optional and offer nothing other than a few trophy items for the player's accomplishment. Trying to turn a sandbox game with the most bare bone lore, gameplay complexity, etc. into something like Dungeons or Legends just isn't going to work.
You see people coming back to so many franchises like God of War, DOOM and more so, why can they have so many games and Minecraft can't? Again, it's because all those other games are fun but also have the benefit of having lots of lore and a character with an actual personality that people enjoy watching and playing as. Minecraft is a blank canvas, that's why it's been such a success but, it is also because of that that it is unable to branch out successfully into other genera, spinoffs or sequels.

My nine year old little brother wanted Minecraft Deluxe for his birthday, since he was on playstation. It would give him a bunch of cool items and stuff, including emotes, avatars, texture packs, etc. So obviously he would pick Deluxe over starter edition. So he asks his mom for Minecraft Deluxe and she sends it to a friend, telling her that he wants minecraft deluxe. Here's the thing: when showing her a photo of the game, she showed Minecraft Legends Deluxe Edition, which is absolutely not worth your money, and only gives you 6 fucking skins. On his birthday, he is so incredibly excited, he cant contain his happiness.
Now imagine the fucking disappointment on his face seeing "minecraft legends, the deluxe collection". For refrence, we do not even have an appreciation for any type of spinoff of Minecraft. We're both like, " maybe its not that bad. ". So we boot it up, and are instantly met with a disappointment of a game. Nothing fun. The entire building is automated, the game has nothing to do with minecraft, and the entire campaign is ass. It takes the entire idea of minecraft and throws it out of the window. The game doesnt even feel like minecraft. It's just minecraft labeled over a random ass open-world RPG game. It's not even worth your money.

It makes me mad. Because I _love_ this game conceptually and visually. Its art style is amazing. The music is relaxing and chill. There was _so much potential,_ but it failed because they fumbled the gameplay (the most important part of the game!). They should have taken notes from other RTS games like Pikmin, and they should have seriously done something to fix the repetitiveness.
The worst part is, the game would have lasted so much longer if they had actually _involved the community._ The Myths, Lost Legends, and the game's Marketplace would have been _perfect_ for community made content! Minecraft _thrives_ off of the community. The fact that every aspect of the game basically frowns upon letting the player create their own thing was a huge red flag. No chat in multiplayer is a huge issue (because you know... its a _strategy game),_ there aren't a lot of unique skins to choose from unless you buy stuff (which is not good, considering the price of the game itself is too high), and the multiplayer literally has 1 game mode.
Its like they _wanted_ it to fail, or were just too afraid to actually _try._ It hasn't even been a year yet and they already gave up supporting it. Which really really sucks. I feel bad for the team that poured their hearts and souls into making this, only to have it flop so badly because of stupid executive decisions.

Growing up in the late nineties in the early 2000s I still have the pleasure of playing Minecraft much later and even though I was older I still very much enjoyed it I would say it's probably the only real big innovation game of the late 2000 / early 2010s for Minecraft dungeons however I think the only reason I got hooked on that one was because I played Diablo 3 a few years before it and felt right at home but I did start to quickly see that the storyline wasn't too heavy but had potential prior to this video I didn't know they stopped supporting dungeons actually I didn't know they they kept continuing at to this point but with Legends I honestly don't know where it stands where their customers they were going for dungeons was for Diablo style players that wouldn't mind a Minecraft simplified theme on it but legends yeah I just don't know where they were heading with that.

I need a REAL storymode for Minecraft. Where all the normal attributes exist in it from OG Minecraft, but alongside structures that can't be mined, and random NPC generation (the villagers), where they can give quests. This means there could be 'rare' NPC spawns, like Kings or Dukes, or a criminal. If you save a town from a raid, the villagers will call you hero when they speak to you for a time. There'd also be a new build mechanism where you can put down a red 3d outline that goes invisible once placed, and can be upgraded. Within this outline, you can build a house and the world will recognize it as the players home. That way npcs close enough can pathfind to it. And grr... I just want there to be an option where building things in minecraft can be met with more game creation.
An npc could give you a quest that's like, "Hey, I need to a shop in this location (proceeds to show thin 3d outlines). Could you help me?"" And the player could build for the village. Or a villager could say, "Hey, I really hate competing with the shop owner across town, could you burn their shop down?" and if you do, you'll earn 'fear points' instead of 'heroic.'

Minecraft Storymode was one of the most successful Minecraft spinoffs ngl, but considering Telltale games (the creator of the spinoff in collab with Mojang) had to shut down, that's why it stopped production. Sure the studio was bought out and revived, but series like TWD telltale series had to be finished, and it's likely story mode would of ended after season 2.

Personally I'm disappointed because Mojang just can't figure out how to make a game that works well for the switch. The game is literally unplayable for me. After the first part of what I think was the tutorial, I got stuck in an area where the allays wouldn't do anything for me, none of the mobs would listen to me, and I was stuck in some sort of box that wouldn't allow me to leave the area. To make things worse, I had just finished playing Tears of the Kingdom which was beautifully put together.
