The last transmission by the FO is more accurately translated as "And Stockholm SK751, we're crashing into the ground now" which is just chilling to think about. Imagine sitting in a plane that's going down and having to say that.....

  • @STOPLIKEBEGGARS101

They were lucky to have off duty-pilot Holmberg onboard! He was sitting in the first seat row and the cockpit door was open so he could see inside and realized they didn't know what to do.They had no checklist for this type of event on this plane, but he had made one himself based on the previous plane model and used that to instruct the pilots.

I concur. They must've been so heavy with fuel, unless they'd only fueled up enough to get to Kopenhagen but I doubt it. What an exceptionally good outcome and I salute Captain Rasmussen's clear headed responses. I'm a little confused as to why the Captain or F/O didn't immediately hit the APU.

@@katehobbs2008 It's possible I didn't even register what I was reading when I first looked at the title. You are correct, though, that those should have been clues to me that a happy ending was in store. What could have caused me to be unprepared is that I thought "...we are in a field..." meant the final words of the pilot before fatally crashing into the field; and "miracle" could have referred to the good fortune that the plane didn't crash into a populated area. The translation ”we are in a field now” is a bit misleading, I think. From what I remember, the F/O’s words were ”vi havererar i marken nu”, which translated to ”we are crashing into the ground now”. So, it was spoken moments before contact. Which makes it all the more amazing that he could say it in such a matter-of-fact way. There’s a good Swedish radio documentary on the incident, which goes into detail on the actions of all three pilots, unfortunately I don’t think it’s available in english.

The true hero in this was Captain Stefan Rasmussen! I followed it closely at the time and also read Rasmussens book after the crash. His argues with SAS about the systems onboard and the deicing procedures made them angry and they tried to give Cpt Holmberg the glory. During the 4 minutes and 10 seconds flight some 20-30 decisions and actions were taken and it was Captain Stefan Rasmussen who actually kept the glideslope at the perfect angle that saved them all! He actually bite one tooth to pieces from shere concentration... His experience from all kinds of aircraft including gliders might have helped. It might be the only time in aviation history that anybody landed an airliner with complete enginefailure on solid ground where everybody survived.

It destroyed the captains life, he never got over it, he said that he could never again trust a plane because it almost killed all his passengers, he is a really nice man and i feel very sorry for him.

Yeah and Boeing added that throttle thing without them knowing it, what cause the crash in the first place.

But it didn't destroy his life. And he didn't even end up in a wheelchair. Whether or not he ever got over it, he is quite blessed.

The airport was renamed in 2001 to "Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport", At the time of the incident it was known as Warsaw-Okecie Airport and Okecie International Airport.
The clip suggests it was known by the Chopin name in 1991, it wasn't.

The last words weren't "we are in a field now". In Swedish, they were "vi havererar i marken nu" which literally means "we're crashing into the ground nu". Bit of a different meaning, wouldn't you agree?

MD-80 series can take lot of mishandling.
I worked in air company that had 82s and 83s in early 2010s.
The planes kept flying despite terrible maintenance and violations.
McDonnell Douglas surely knows how to make airplanes.

if it hadnt snowed that day, the only thing firefighters wouldve pulled out of the plane (or what remained of it) would have been charred remains. its crazy how the smallest detail could be the difference between life and death.
