Another interesting(but tragic) fact that goes with Grell is that in the Black Butler manga, it’s said that grim reapers are human souls that committed suicide, and are forced to witness the lives of the living until they learn to value their own lost life.(Or something like that.) Considering the time period the series takes place in, one can only imagine the hell she was put through as a transgender before she ended her life and became a reaper. On the upside, she now seems very happy at times.

Grelle being Trans was something I wondered for a while as she constantly refers to herself as a lady but nobody else in the series gives her the basic decency of referring to her properly so she's always put off as a very flaming individual. If Yana says she uses she pronouns and is female, then not only does it make sense for the character but that's how we should refer to her. (Also, "they" isn't hard to use people do it all the time lol wow).

I think Grell fell in love with Madame Red in a 'partner-in-crime' sorta way, but after or a little bit before he/she killed her he/she realized he loved her in a romantic way. But weather it be before or after, he felt betrayed that Madame couldn't do that one small thing, after how far they've come, and he killed her. Afterward though, he regretted killing the woman he realized he loved, and that's why he never has a permanent change of cloths. Well of course no one in the series used the correct pronouns for her in canon, the time the series takes place in is a time when they didn't exactly accept trans people, when people were more close-minded than now. This is why we should use her correct pronouns, we should know better by now
Fun fact: Grell means uncomfortably bright/obnoxious in German, usually referring to light (for instance "grelle Farben" would be obnoxious colors, "grelles Licht" would be too bright light) Considering how Grell herself acts, I'd consider "grell" to also be a very suitable adjective to describe her personality. So I doubt it's a coincidence ;)

It says they sympathized with each other due to both having the burden of not being able to bear children... I dont think it ever says that in the anime but it kind of hints towards it with certain aspects of Grell's dialogue in that specific arc/episode.

I tend to use both male and female pronouns when referring to Grell. I tend to describe them more feminine but then occasionally use male pronouns like "He is my queen" or something like that
I tend to say 'he' when referring to 'Butler Grell' and 'she' when referring to _Grell_. If I'm around someone I know doesn't get it, or sways one way over the other a tad TOO MUCH I'll be as ambiguous as possible.

The reason people say madam red should be included on the list of people who GRELL loved is because the reason GRELL agreed to help Angelina is because she loved her. It is strange, yes, because GRELL is a transgender female and prefers to be a female, and is seen loving men because of it, but there technically is no evidence pointing to GRELL being straight. Grell really is one of those characters that has to grow on you. I remember hating him after his introduction and just shrugging him off as yet another over the top and annoying side character but after rereading and watching the series I now consider him one of my favourite characters in the whole series. I sometimes call her La Bête Rouge. It's based on La Bête Noir which translates to "the black beast". However, black is not suitable for Grell so I simply altered it a bit. Edit: I find it funny that Grell is in fourth on the popularity poll. Four is pronounced Shi in Japanese. Death is also pronounced Shi in Japanese. This is why four is considered to be an unlucky number in Japan.

Another thing: even if other people misgendering someone were an excuse to do it yourself (it's not), Grelle is virtually always addressed with gender-neutral pronouns/suffixes in the original Japanese. Since English doesn't have a common equivalent, the translators defaulted to 'he' for some ungodly reason. 'But the other characters use masculine pronouns!' doesn't hold water. They technically don't. It's a translation fluke. I also thought Grelle was a man at first and used masculine pronouns for years. Then I learnt better and I switched. It takes a second to get used to but it's really not difficult. You can go 'PWEASE NO FLAME uwu' all you want, but so long as you're intentionally and knowingly misgendering a character you yourself believe is a trans woman, people are going to call you out on it. As they should.
also, since Grell is a woman you use she/her not they/them (which isn't a hard thing to do), what someone identifies as is not up for your own interpretation, cuz since you can't even do that with a fictional character, just warning you for when you get a reality check

Grell doesn't seem to be bothered by people calling them male, though? If they wanted to be called she/her they should speak up... My significant other is trans and doesn't mind any pronouns (she, he, or they) and they're kind enough to state that when people meet them, and if they DO want a certain pronoun one day they'll say so. From what I gathered from Grell and Madame Red is that their relationship was more or less a platonic love.( I hope that's the right word here, if not then someone please correct me here) Grell (at the time) respected Madame Red in her resolve in taking matters into her own hands as she mercilessly killed all the women that had chosen to throw away something that they both so longed for, but couldn't attain. I say that last part because in the Black Butler wiki regarding Grell s' character profile, it was stated ( I don't know by who so don't call me on this please ) that one of the things that her and Madame Red had in common was their desire -and lack of ability- to bear children, so given that Grell also wished so much to be a women, she could understand the frustration that Madame Red felt toward the women she killed.Thus their partnership was born. ( again this is my opinion and also what I gathered from the wiki site, if someone finds something that I missed and am wrong then I apologize and correct where I'm wrong please ) The falling out between them was simply because when Madame Red hesitated in her resolve to kill Ciel, Grell saw this as weakness and she doesn't abide that at all. She stated that she didn't deserve or 'had what it takes' to wear red, as red represents passion and desire. In her eyes she lost both when she faltered, so she killed her without regret. As also stated in the OVA The Tale of Will the Reaper, Grell was said to have high practical skills and a low morality score. ( makes a lot of sense, huh?) So if that helps with the placement of Madame Red on the Relationship board, then yay!! I helped!! :) If not, then all I did was state my opinion and have lost nothing!! :) I loved the video!!

Yes, Grell is female, but throughout the anime and manga, she is commonly and repeatedly referred to by male or masculine pronouns. And it does not seem like she ever corrects any of the characters when they use male pronouns, and she has not been seen asking people to refer to her by female or feminine pronouns. Because of that, and because many people are unaware of her position as a woman, male pronouns are commonly used for her. If you are going to blame anyone for the constant mistakes, than the original manga creator likely should for having the characters refer to Grell as a male, along with never truly addressing it in the manga from what I've seen.
For the drrr one yana toboso and Akiyo satagori did a cross over on the first volume of drrr. When you open the page it has a folded page (which when I first found it I thought it was a rip until later) and it is Shizuo and izaya (yana toboso drew Shizuo and akiyo drew izaya) at the end it also has a message from yang toboso saying: "Congratulations on getting Durarara!! X1 out! I am Yama toboso, one time collaborator with satagori -sensei on the fold-out illustration of this book. Yana Toboso, The creator of Black Butler, had confessions manga panels and Grell Sutcliff’s one and true desire was to have a “SEX CHANGE”!!!! I tend to use both male and female pronouns when referring to Grell. I tend to describe them more feminine but then occasionally use male pronouns like "He is my queen" or something like that

Grell really is one of those characters that has to grow on you. I sometimes call her La Bête Rouge. It's based on La Bête Noir which translates to "the black beast". However, black is not suitable for Grell so I simply altered it a bit.
Edit: I find it funny that Grell is in fourth on the popularity poll. Four is pronounced Shi in Japanese. Death is also pronounced Shi in Japanese. This is why four is considered to be an unlucky number in Japan.

Me being obsessed with Grell, ofc I loved this video! she's stunning, my waifu and tbh I don't mind people calling Grell him or they as some don't know her gender and others see her as male.
Another thing: even if other people misgendering someone were an excuse to do it yourself (it's not), Grelle is virtually always addressed with gender-neutral pronouns/suffixes in the original Japanese. Since English doesn't have a common equivalent, the translators defaulted to 'he' for some ungodly reason. 'But the other characters use masculine pronouns!' doesn't hold water. They technically don't. It's a translation fluke.
I also thought Grelle was a man at first and used masculine pronouns for years. Then I learnt better and I switched. It takes a second to get used to but it's really not difficult. You can go 'PWEASE NO FLAME uwu' all you want, but so long as you're intentionally and knowingly misgendering a character you yourself believe is a trans woman, people are going to call you out on it. As they should.

My significant other is trans and doesn't mind any pronouns (she, he, or they) and they're kind enough to state that when people meet them, and if they DO want a certain pronoun one day they'll say so.

From what I gathered from Grell and Madame Red is that their relationship was more or less a platonic love.( I hope that's the right word here, if not then someone please correct me here) Grell (at the time) respected Madame Red in her resolve in taking matters into her own hands as she mercilessly killed all the women that had chosen to throw away something that they both so longed for, but couldn't attain. I say that last part because in the Black Butler wiki regarding Grell s' character profile, it was stated ( I don't know by who so don't call me on this please ) that one of the things that her and Madame Red had in common was their desire -and lack of ability- to bear children, so given that Grell also wished so much to be a women, she could understand the frustration that Madame Red felt toward the women she killed.Thus their partnership was born. ( again this is my opinion and also what I gathered from the wiki site, if someone finds something that I missed and am wrong then I apologize and correct where I'm wrong please )
The falling out between them was simply because when Madame Red hesitated in her resolve to kill Ciel, Grell saw this as weakness and she doesn't abide that at all. She stated that she didn't deserve or 'had what it takes' to wear red, as red represents passion and desire. In her eyes she lost both when she faltered, so she killed her without regret. As also stated in the OVA The Tale of Will the Reaper, Grell was said to have high practical skills and a low morality score. ( makes a lot of sense, huh?)

Then Ciel says something along the lines of, "No, you don't mean." Then he is cut off by his aunt/Madam Red stepping out of the building saying, "You don't really need to ask do you?" In a snarky tone, so basically it's summed up to say that Grell actually had a crush on Madam Red. P.S I love your videos ;D

Yes, Grell is female, but throughout the anime and manga, she is commonly and repeatedly referred to by male or masculine pronouns. And it does not seem like she ever corrects any of the characters when they use male pronouns, and she has not been seen asking people to refer to her by female or feminine pronouns. Because of that, and because many people are unaware of her position as a woman, male pronouns are commonly used for her. If you are going to blame anyone for the constant mistakes, than the original manga creator likely should for having the characters refer to Grell as a male, along with never truly addressing it in the manga from what I've seen.

Yes, Grell Sutcliff is a fictional character, but the fact that she is trans in such a big piece of media is a huge deal for the trans community!! It’s our representation! Grell is an absolute queen and she should be treated as such!!
Grell is always misgendered by everyone because Black Butler is set in 1888 where trans people weren’t a thing publicly or they would be killed like they are today for being who they are! I’m sure that if Black Butler was set in modern day there would be characters in the show that wouldn’t misgender her such as William T. Spears, Ronald Knox, Othello, Eric Slingby, Alan Humphries, Elizabeth Midford, Madam Red, etc.

Grell killed herself because she couldn’t get sex change surgery. The whole reason she is a Reaper is because she couldn’t bare the fact that people will never see her for her true self, a woman.
Also to say that “Grell never defends his gender when people say He/Him” is actually false. In the Kuroshitsuji Musical; The Most Beautiful Death In The World, The very first thing that Grell says is ‘No, No, She not He!’ She defends her gender because William misgendered her like everyone does. After about 118 years of being misgendered I truly think Grell gave up! Grell was so misfortunate to live in the time period that she does but if she was in this time period she would have people that would recognize that she is trans and respect that and call her “She/Her”!!
I truly do believe that Grell is such a deeper character then she seems and it does hurt her a lot when people misgender her!!
Seeing these (Mostly canon) facts about Grell’s gender and still going on to misgender her and call her a man is just straight disrespectful and transphobic. Fictional character or not, you should never misgender someone.

Honestly the transgender (transgender is the more pc word and not transsexual. Many find transsexual offensive.) fact is really cool!!! Like many of the people I know are trans and same so !!!!!!!!!! Black Butler is one of my favorite animes too !!!

yes other characters use male pronouns because when black butler was set transgender people were not respected at all, grell has referred to herself as female countless times in both manga and anime, and only her opinion matters because it's her life and body, grell is female get over it
I believe the reason people consider Madam red to be one of Grell's 'crushes' was because during the Jack the Ripper arc, on the moment Grell revealed himself/herself they said "It was out of love for a woman." or something across those lines. Seconds afterwards Madam Red appeared as well, implying that the 'woman' Grell meant was her.
