Got it a couple weeks ago, the more you use it the better it gets.....absolutely love it, even after playing sports its easy to restyle into place. Just remember to layer it in.
Honestly, I really like this product with a pre-styler, it's everything you said it is. However, with clean dry hair (without any oil in it), it is a pain to apply, it has a lot of tug and it is not smooth at all.
Hm, I haven’t experienced that myself. Though to be fair I have to always use some type of smoothing pre styler no matter what, cause otherwise my hair is just too dry and unruly lol
In the video you mentioned you used as a pre styler a 25 what? I am curious to know what you use for a pre styler since we have the same hair type BROTHERS!! lol do you recommend any specific products to help manage thick hairs?
Because I am living in France I thought it would be expensive to get it but it's only 24 $ so I'm gonna buy it and see how much time I'm gonna wait to get it. Nice review, I like how you did it.
Is this better then dauntless matte paste or crafted matte paste? Like with hold because I wanna go for a messy look with textured and is this drier than both of them?
Matt, I'd be very interested in doing a comparison between this "northern light Matte paste" and the "Arcadian Matte paste". Apparently, the Arcadian Matte paste is the bomb.. Kinda curious to see what you think about it .
I’ve been waiting for your review on this one, got this stuff about a month ago and have used it every day since! Unbelievable texture, smell and hold! It literally feels like nothing is in your hair. Love this stuff! Great review as always 🙌
Hi Matt, I have fine, slightly thinner hair.. I want extreme hold with matte finish and not too dry. Except Crafted Matte Paste, Is SR Northern Lights a good Choice for me or anything else? Thanks.
@@TDMStyle Honoured!! You have replied. And thx for your Valuable suggestions. Unfortunately, In our country these are not available, Only Forte, Blumaan, Shear, By Villain, Hanz de Fuko and Flagship. Big fan of "smell" part in your review♥️
The problem with a glass jar is it can break. That's what happened to my jar and then the product dried out. I enjoyed using the product while I had it. It definitely felt heavy in my hair for a matte paste. I'd be curious as to how you feel about this product now since in your videos you seem to fall quicklyin love with a product but cool off as time goes on.
True about the glass, I guess I've just been lucky though and have not had one break on me yet. I do think Northern Lights is a bit heavier than other matte pastes out there but I still really enjoy it for more natural/flowy looks.
If I want a Shear Revival product that has a hold of Northern Light with a tad shinier than natural shine/semi wet look without hardening, which product should I buy? Crystal Lake, Easy Tiger, or Gray Ghost?
I think Gray Ghost fits those criteria, but I haven’t used Crystal Lake or Easy Tiger, so I can’t personally comment on those. From what I’ve seen of Easy Tiger, that one seems to be shinier than the others.
Damn that new cut and color mixed in with that matte paste just looks fire. Gana have to pick that up cause I got same hair as you. Good review as always Matt
They're all quite different, but what it boils down to for me is that Fatboy putty is drier, TSB is heavier and thicker. Honestly for me I like Northern Lights the most out of the lot.
@@TDMStyle Thanks man, I'm finishing up the salon guy pregame which seems to last forever as I barely need any to style with haha that's one of my favorites for now, but I've heard about these guys so I'll try this next. As always, you're awesome 👍🏻🙂
Tbh I’m always testing new things so I don’t have just one that I always use. Even on days that I’m not testing, I alternate between several depending on what type of style I’m after for that day.
Basically I spend a little more time on that section and make sure to use the round brush to apply tension in the direction I want it to lay. It’s a pain lol
@@TDMStyle thanks, I'm ordering a bottle of it. I just got Northern Lights for the first time and can't decide how I feel about it. My hair is naturally pretty thick, so maybe the waxy pastes aren't really ideal for my hair type and I should opt for the heavy clays? I feel like the pastes can just make my hair appear really dry and puffy. But maybe this prestyler will help counter that...
Extremely different. Crafted matte paste is a liquidy consistency with extremely strong hold, and this is more of a traditional pastey/clay-like consistency with less hold and a little more weight.
@@TDMStyleThank you for advice, will try that. Also on their website it says apply to dry hair, but on my jar to damp. How can that be? Got mine from newmen.co.uk
Hey Matt I've been looking for a light clenser i could use every day. I was using Shevoos Oil Clenser but its so expensive for so little product. And Morris Motley clenser is just plain expensive. Do you have any alternative you could recommend?
I haven't tried many oil cleansers yet - I know there are others out there but I'm not sure on their pricing or effectiveness. Honestly though with either Shehvoo or MM one, they're expensive but you use such a tiny amount at a time (and not every time you wash your hair either, basically I only use one every 3rd wash or so), so they last a long time.
Did you also get the SR Loyal Sea Clay? Looking for a product that nourishes your hair or a leave in conditioner on days off to detox from all products used ;)
I just got the Arcadian matte paste yesterday.. I haven't used the northern light matte paste yet, but the Arcadian matte paste is truly amazing! Another fantastic product is the Stickmore Styling Cream! That one has a phenomenal hold!
Odouds Matte paste and Arcadian Matte paste have a much much better Hold. Northern Lights was one of the worst products I have ever tried, on thick hair it was a weak ass hold. and if you use to many scoops to get more hold it weighs your hair down and gets greasy quick......, goes to show how subjective products are on diff hair types.
Thanks! I've definitely learned a lot through my youtube journey and have been just getting better at overall hair practices, as well as using better quality products in terms of shampoo, conditioner, leave-in sprays, etc.
This versus Monarch ? Based on what you've described, it kinda sounds like Monarch in terms of application, finishing, hold, shineness ( Monarch also has a natural shine too) Hmm.... Usually I'll Monarch-ed as prestyle but fucking hate it as a poststyle, just makes my hair look a bit shine and not much hold. Great video tho ! !
Yeah I felt the same about Monarch - for me it was very little hold, too shiny and resulted in weirdly high strand separation instead of a clay-type texture. But I haven't used it in a really long time, so I'd be interested to break it out and test it against some other matte pastes. Maybe a new series of Hair Compare videos this year??
I hate that it coates the hair and make it looks very unnatural, some other youtubes have mentioned this as well. It's kind of like a layer of hairspray. It feels very sticky in a dirty way. I had a good first impression with this but now sadly I cannot use this.
I never really thought of Fruity Pebbles but I can def see it haha. Once it's in my hair though I don't really smell it anymore except for a whiff here and there, so I would imagine other people won't really smell it unless they get real close.
I have fine hair and this product is absolutely amazing. It seriously works with all hair types!

My go-to prestyler is 25 Spray from TheSalonGuy - definitely makes my thick hair more manageable. Smooths, softens, adds volume. Amazing stuff!
Hey, how would you compare this to morrocan oil texture clay?
For me Northern Lights was outright better, but I wanna try the Moroccanoil clay again and see.
One of the reason I bought this coz this review.. thanks man

NL is good but not extreme hold. I’d recommend either TSG Pre-Game or Templeton Tonics Odin.
