    One of my favorite concerts was Toto Live in Paris. Steve played this to such good effect, I never get tired of watching it. You certainly did it justice Jon, excellent as always 👍🎸

    Jon, So it is true, playing a Signature guitar DOES make you sound like the Artist the guitar was designed for - I always believed it was all in the Artists hands, not the instrument...........................but in all seriousness, you floored me with that superb perfomance, the very soul of Lukather passing through your body into your fingers. Thank you for sharing this here

    When I first started working as a guitar salesman at the most prestigious greek store, back in 2000, they had this exact same guitar as a demo instrument !! Well, me being a lifetime fan of Luke, was absolutely delighted to have this gorgeous creation of mr Mike McGuire in my hands ❤

    Amazing. I have put Steve Lukathers signature pickups in my Eart HSS Goldtop. No FLoyd, just std trem.
    Sound very similar to your presentation.
    I have had EMG's before but didnt like them. These are great

    The Ibanez Steve Lukather model 1984-1986 is my favorite signature type guitar. I love the color!

    Lovely review. I’ve got one of the John McGuire (Mike’s son) Valley Pro’s in the Lukather spec. One small correction, the body of the one you’re reviewing is a solid quilted maple body which makes it an even more exclusive beast!

    I had the privilege of living around LA and visiting Valley Arts music when I was young. I purchased a Japanese strat there ,but never made the plunge after I tried out some EMG’s that can sound very sterile.
    Of course you can make every guitar sound sweet

    I remember that Guitar! Every Top 40 Guitarist in my Country wanted one because of Luke. There was even a Valley Arts Guitar Shop in the Heart of Cologne/Germany, but didn't survive its greatest competitor Musicstore Cologne.

    Oh wow, that brings back memories. Still remember when these came out, also the Carlton one. Been a Lukather fan since the 70s :) I believe warmoth supplied the parts for those.

    The new Charvel Pro Mod Series sign. model of Marco Sfogli is pretty similar/ heavily inspired by these guitars.
    Would be cool to see a demo/comparison with this beauty here.

    In the 90's I wanted one, but they were way too expensive for me at that time, I bought a Fender Japan Fotoflame Floyd Strat and added an EMG Steve Lukather Pickup kit (85/SLV/SLV), still get it, well maintened, incredibely good guitar

    hey Jon,
    thanks for doing the demo. I too am a huge Luke fan, and to this very day, even though I am loyal to EB MM, I truly believe Luke’s best tones came from the VA guitars. I’ve not had the privilege of playing one, but watching you, seeing your emotions… hmmm… Yes I am very jealous (hahaha).
    One day i would love to own one - I would love the “robot” model. Again many thanks. 16:17

    Just goes to show how wrong all the keyboard warriors on the forums are about EMGs. This thing sounds awesome, especially in the hands of a really excellent player such as yourself. I'm waiting on an EMG 85/SLV/SLV set for my Fender Japan ST62-FR at the moment. Can't wait.

    I tried two versions of this. One, just like in the video, and another with Tom Anderson wide pole pickups with the addition of a tone control. I liked them both but preferred the passive Anderson pups. I tested them through a Boogie Mark III Simulclass and a Coliseum head at Valley Arts shop in Los Angeles about 1989 or so.

    There was not a Lukather series guitar made till 1988-89. This 1985 guitar was not an official series guitar. I worked there during that time and made the first prototype for Luke and he tried it out in front of me. There's an add from Guitar Player Magazine with Luke and my old boss Mike advertising the NEW Lukather series guitar.

      Yep the official Luke was an ash body and had white EMGs.

    Yes beautiful guitar. Love Emg pickups. Very nice buddy ❤️🙏💯👋👋. Years ago i had some Emg pickups put in a fender strat. Wish i still had that guitar. Oh well. I will eventually do it again. 😊😊

    I once saw two of these hanging in the guitar shop of Tommy's Special guitars in Germany. Very expensive but great guitars.

    The official Lukather VA was a Swamp Ash body with white EMG SA SA 85 pickups.
    Larry Carlton actually had the first Quilt top fireburst.

    Even back in 1985 those guitars were very expensive. Only top notch guitar players had them. I wanted one but was too poor.

      I have the same guitar with a stop tailpiece. Mine is a 1990 with the interlock neck joint. Took a year to get because mine was being built when they had the fire at the shop. It’s a wonderful piece of art but sadly doesn’t get played much anymore. Too many guitars. Have thought about selling the Valley Arts but just can’t bring myself to part with it.

    You mention the body wood is swamp ash, are you sure because it looks like maple. Maple was a body wood used on VA at the time. I always liked that guitar since the 80s.

    I own a custom pro from 91. very similar to the lukather. but is made of maple. very nice guitar. somehow like a work of art and sounds great. by the way great video and very tastefully played. as always

    Hi Jon. great guitarist. I try to do a little Toto, and I have a Musicman Sterling John Petrucci, I put on a Di Marzio transition to be closer to his guitars. I didn't know he played with emgs. you give me ideas I have a guitar equipped with emg I will try, thank you 🥸👍

    your emg 85 is not original , the mechanics strings too , and also the Floyd . but is very looks like a star licks Luke model . bravo man ! beautiful guitar

    So, me is another Lukather fan. Very handsome guitar. These EMG’s sound incredibly awesome as well as Jon’s playing which is very dynamic and spot on to show the guitars capabilities. The backing track is really off the hook. Any idea where I can find it?
