It was about the third competition he attended. In March 2007, towards the end of the one-year fellowship and intense bel canto/opera training in Graz, Austria, he decided to try some singing competitions to benchmark himself. He first attended a competition in Germany and then another in Austria (two days apart). At the second competition, he met this gentleman who was the manager of an opera theater in Italy. This gentleman was deeply impressed by an Italian aria that Mr. Shi sang at the competition, so he sent him an application form for a competition in Italy, which actually was also an audition for an opera. Every year the theme changes and that year it happened to be Così fan tutte. At that time Shi Yijie hadn't learned this opera yet. He looked at the score it was so thick... he thought about it, then entrusted this decision to a two-euro coin. He flipped it and the coin said to go for a shot. So in the next two or three weeks he barely slept and spent all the time learning and memorizing the score. He was not fully confident after the preparation in rush, but he still flew to Italy for this competition. After three rounds of audition for tenor, he finally won the competition as well as the contract of Così fan tutte; and that marks the official start of his professional tenor career :)
@@sherryyyf Well done! The Italian theatre manager was so impressed with Mr. Shi's Italian pronunciation, he started to talk to him in Italian directly, but he only knew 3 words (I', guessing grazie, ciao & ti amo). I find this small detail amusing. LOL
Shi is so humble and he was asked repeated why and how so successful, his answer is luck and his encounters of many kind teachers, coaches and operahouse managers at Europe. His biggest help or advise is from italian opera manager who's part time work be enjoying doing judges on youth competition, he was so impressed by Shi at his italian language singing as well as his humble hardworking ethics. Encouraged him to further go more competition, then he did, that is to win the contract. ( earlier he talked about he did not know or confident of himself at what level his voice and everything was, in spite of 2 times winning the gold, he was still not sure what level he was) Shi did go further details into the third competition on mozart's opera, final round to have only 4 people, he was the only non italian, he did not feel any pressure rather he just gave his all, did not expect anything at all, then deep into the mid night, he was the finalist again... this not only won the contract but assure him of himself... While, he did not talk on this interview, that why he went to Japan to study music, maybe not everyone's ideal, or why in Shanghai or Beijing, the elitest places for singing... obvious, he went through a ton earlier in life, did not destroy rather strengthen his will, and he did open and grab what ever opportunities he could get. Early in the interview, he mentioned study 12 opera in one year in austria, close door, this may not be that special among many chinese students, but it is the factor showing he did not rely on any talent or luck only. Greatest lyric tenor from China, but not from chinese academic training,! More to come,

I saw and heard him in Donizetti ‘ la favorite in Toulouse. He was amazing
In compare with other tenors from China, i think he is far better than all tenors from China or even Asia.
World are waiting for a great opera singer!

Would love to see a translation of this interview! Or at least a summery. What did Mr. Shi Yijie say about Un aura amorosa? :)
