Wawl. I never thought I'd see the day when someone would react to early Floyd, especially astronomy domine. Now set the controls for the heart of the sun. Your taste in music is impeccable young lady. 😎
I've heard Astronomy Domine (pedantic point - the words are pronounced to rhyme) from this era numerous times before, but this is the first time I've seen film footage of the performance. Mad props to Gilmour for not just learning the song verbatim, but putting his own spin on it.
Can you imagine, it was 52 years ago and I was 14 years old. This was my first taste of Classic Rock ! Yes it's a masterpiece and will stay forever! Pink Floyd was ahead of their time! The seventies was the best era! Thanks Becky for reacting to Pink Floyd.
I love that you have reviewed this wonderful track. I only hope that you also have listened to the original with Syd Barrett as the front man -- after all, he wrote this music.
Well I did not know there was a video of this song performed in 1970. I would say that the quality of sound on this video recording is better than the live recording of the same song on the Umma Gumma live album. I actually saw them perform this song at the Liverpool Empire theatre in the UK in 1970. The set was basically as per the Umma Gumma live album with some other songs thrown in. I do remember clearly the encore. Some of the audience were shouting for Saucerfull and some for Set the Controls. I think they had already decided it was going to be Set the controls, fantastic finish to a fantastic concert.
I was a kid back in the early seventies when I heard this for the first time. Twelve years old I was. Amazed at the sounds that came from my nine years older friend's cassette recorder. Fell in love with the music right there and then. Saw a butterfly floating about, mid-through the song. Probably your unborn spirit. It sat on my shoulder and stayed there til the song ended and then flew off. And now you're here. My buttefly come to life. Hugs and warm greetings from Belgium, butterfly.
I had just turned nine when this album was released, my sixteen-year-old brother bought the Umma Gumma album il late 69. That live track has always been my favorite rendition ✌️
These guys came from another planet. Seriously. You should react to the last PF concert in Live 8 2005. Last time the World saw them together. Great job, as always ❤
No problem Rebeka, your face lit up and your eyes were full of expression at the end of the track, that told its own story, Pink Floyd and masterpiece are often in the same sentence, great choice, I haven't seen that performance in years... 😊
It blows my mind that someone could review this tune today and nearly match my own reactions hearing for the first time 54 years ago. You might consider adding hallucinogens to capture all the magic of this masterpiece.
Hi, well Rebeka Luize what can i say but wow! Your first taste of very early Floyd at their spacey/trippy best and you loved it! Now you need to go into 'Interstellar Overdrive' & take a trip to 'Cirrus Minor'! Oh and keep on rockin' beautiful.
This has Always been my favorite song from the first album.. when i saw them in 1994, This was the song they started the concert with!! Needless to say The show was EPIC.....
I saw them perform this live back then, where have the last 50+ years gone? Great to see you are exploring their early albums, nowadays most people think Pink Floyd started with Dark Side of the Moon. I am so glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you very much for reaction to this particular PF song written by Syd Barret. You said that they leave so much room for just playing the instruments on this one. You can also try another gem from Barret-era Floyd - "Interstellar Overdrive". They don't sing at all on it. They just playing their instruments on a highest level of schizophrenic insanity possible. And it is even more hypnotizing then Astronomy Domine.
Hi Rebeka, great to see and hear you on Pink Floyd, one of my all time favourites since I was 12/13,am now 66,when I was about this age a few mates and I went to the colston hall in Bristol,we didn't have any money so we stood outside and could hear everything, about half way through some bloke showed us a way to sneak in through the stage door, this was about the time of this show,so fond memories, now the main reason I'm writing, please even pretty please do me the honour and check out in a lot of people's opinions one of the very very best female singers if not the best of all time, the Gorgeous talent that is Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac,the one I thourghaly recommend is Edge Of Seventeen live from the White Wing Dove show back in the 80's I think,I'm a fan of yours now,but if you do this for me I'll be a fan for ever and a day,I can pretty much guarantee you will get to love this show given the chance, hope I haven't bored you and followers to much, take care, keep up the good work, and always remember, "Stick to the roads, stay off the moors, beware of the moon
Got this on album of theirs I bought a couple of years ago (when it came out) "UmmaGumma, vinyl of course. About the same time I bought Ssssh from Ten Years After.
Rebeka, I bought The first 3 albums Pink Floyd made. This song wore my record player out I loved it so much. It was mind bending either stoned or not. This was why I loved PF back then and to this day. This song also reminded of Jimi Hendrix's song 1983 (A merman I should Turn To Be) on the Electric Ladyland Album. Man I miss those days. I'm Actually surprised you played, reacted, and also love this song . We are on the same plane in many ways I believe. Beautiful reaction, thank you very much Rebeka !!!! P.S. Always love your son choices too. Peace !!
I was always a bit on the fence re the Pink Floyd Id been hearing (The Wall) in college. One day I ran across the Relics cassette at the campus store, bought it and put it in my Walkman. ZOMG!! What extraordinary sounds! Upon hearing the opening of Interstellar Overdrive, I instantly became a Pink Floyd fan. Same goes for when I discovered the original Fleetwood Mac … never was a big FM fan til I heard English Rose. So glad you did this, Rebeka, and glad you enjoyed it so! Pre-Dark Side Pink Floyd was def a different animal, to be sure! I def recommend Interstellar Overdrive … its an instrumental, but a real trip! Also the Live At Pompeii versions of Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, and Saucerful Of Secrets, and Nile Song, Lucifer Sam, The Gold Its In The…, Wot’s…Uh The Deal, Careful With That Axe Eugene
You have really got to grips with Pink Floyd, music is the core, creativity is embraced, and when there are voices, the lyrics have complex meaning. Well done, Rebeka 👍❤️
As neat as it is to see this video, with David and Richard singing lead, I really wish you had reacted to Syd's original version from the first album. Still love the reaction. Try this one out, everything about this from the TV host with the stick up his butt to Syd's presence and charisma, really tells you all you need to know about why the other guys basically built their future songs around his memory. Syd was so eloquent, a beautiful and peaceful soul. David was not yet a member of the band, but he was childhood friends with Syd, taught him to play the guitar even. And has always honored Syd's legacy. One final note... Syd and Roger really sum up what Pink Floyd was and has always been about in their interview. Just perfect how well they sum it up. ruclips.net/video/8suJXPXXo7M/видео.html
My first Pink Floyd album in 1969 was Ummagumma and the version of this on it made me an instant fan. The footage of Floyd will never bore you no matter when made, they are endlessly fascinating. Any tune that was recorded at this session at KQED is gold, as is anything from the live at Pompeii. You will never run out of Pink Floyd to listen and watch, enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Thank you Rebeka for doing a Pink Floyd reaction - it was awesome! I agree it can be hypnotic. Please, please do "Set The Controls for the Heart of the Sun." Would love to hear what you think of this one! Peace!
This is where my love of Pink Floyd began, hearing Umma Gumma and this track especially. It really shows how fundamental Nick Mason’s drumming is to their sound. ❤️
I'm so used to hearing the original version with Syd Barrett, that I forgot they also did it with David Gilmour. Anyway, your reactions were great! You felt the music the same way that I always do when listening to this, as well as many other Pink Floyd songs.
Very similar to the version on the live portion of UmmaGumma, recorded in the summer- i believe june- 1969. The last vestiges of this Floyd was the Pompeii sessions in October '71. After that, things were never quite the same...
This song is from their first album, when Syd Barrett was the lead singer. He wrote this song as well. He was no longer in the band by 1970, when this live version was recorded. This a pretty good version too and you get to see the band.
A korai Pink Floyd lenyűgöző,változatos tele ötletekkel.Egy kifogyhatatlan kincsesbánya! Ajánlom az 'Echoes', ( Pompeii,1971) felülmúlhatatlan... jó az ízlésed, Rebeka!
That was a weird choice Budlevska xD. If you want some suggestions for more early Floyd, I would suggest Fat Old Sun, Childhoods End, Cymbaline, Saucerful of Secrets(from Pompeii), or Echoes (from Pompeii).
Kind of ironic that the lyrics make references to icy waters underground. Some of Jupiter’s and Saturn’s moons have icy waters underground that were discovered decades later after this was written.
Rebeka, as you liked this you may also like Saucer full of Secrets if you have not come across it already Its a bit longer (about 12 minutes) and has no lyrics as such but will transport you to another place.
It’s sad that without Syd the band didn’t have any strong vocalists. You can feel that void in this performance even though this song is a masterpiece.
This was Floyd in the early years ,taken for granted for a longtime and the mega popular stuff only got the praise but it has came back full circle and it is getting noticed .. .In A Gadda Da Vida by Iron Butterfly is a long psychedelic song that is very interesting .. Title is ORIGNAL FULL VERSION .
This song was written by Syd Barrett by the way, all credit to him. I feel like Floyd should have stopped playing Syd’s songs after they left him, or at least say before the performance that this song was written by Syd, because I’ve seen reactions and people think how amazing Waters and Gilmour are for creating such a masterpiece when in reality this was all Syd Barrett’s song.
I have always considered Ummagumma their masterpiece. This was considered "Acid Rock" or occasionally "Space Rock" back then. I hitchhiked across the US, as so many did then. Dark Side put Floyd on the big stage, but Ummagumma was never surpassed. You are the only one to review this, as far as I know.
Why does the preview window say live in Montreaux? This was from the live in studio at KQED public tv in San Francisco. It's a great performance overall. You should go and watch the rest of the set. It's a very intimate, close and personal look at what their live set was like early days.
Great reaction that was my 1st hearing that song and your right what a trip. Great reaction and appreciation from you as always. Check out "Mother" live or album version if you get the chance. I'll be looking out for it. Love the channel ❤
I love seeing youngsters discovering the power. Recommended, off the beaten path: "Sons Of Champlin" - Album: 'Loosen Up Naturally' 1969 - Songs: '1982-A', then 'Get High'; after that pick any song on the album. "The Sons of Champlin are an American rock band, from Marin County in the San Francisco-Bay area, formed in 1965. They are one of the 1960s San Francisco bands, along with Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead and Moby Grape." If you are interested in another case of underappreciated 'san francisco sound' greatness, I think you would appreciate the band/album "It's a Beautiful Day" (1969) and the songs 'Hot Summer Day' (soft), 'Wasted Union Blues' (hard)...(they had a hit with "White Bird" but you can wait on that until or if you decide you want to hear more)
Rad chick goin places others either fear or are clueless about. Just found this channel because of the Doors, obviously Floyd is awesome too. I think you should give Bad Religion a shot, plenty to choose from but “Dearly Beloved” is a good intro, not the acoustic version though.
Considering this song is older than led zeppelin (the band ) you are completely wrong. Floyd were light years ahead of zep and I consider zep my second favourite band.

Wawl. I never thought I'd see the day when someone would react to early Floyd, especially astronomy domine.

Early Floyd all the way--- Rebeka knows her sh!t.

I'm going to listen to relics right now. 😎
Check out "The Crying song."
From "Astronomy domine" you get an idea where they might have come up with "Dark Side!" Simply cosmic!
I was there at that show and I have never been the same since. The cost of the ticket was 5 dollars!
I've heard Astronomy Domine (pedantic point - the words are pronounced to rhyme) from this era numerous times before, but this is the first time I've seen film footage of the performance.
Mad props to Gilmour for not just learning the song verbatim, but putting his own spin on it.

Absolutely a masterpiece!
Syd
There is a BBC Live Unedited version of this from 1967 with the original frontman Syd Barrett. His voice is beautifully suited to this song. RIP Syd.
OBVIOUSLY Chair Dancer does not like Pink Floyd!!!!!! Thank You for reacting to this. most people wouldn't.
Lime and limpid green a sound surrounds the icy waters underground...
The infinity of space, fully experienced, can make one very wise or very mad...
I love that you have reviewed this wonderful track. I only hope that you also have listened to the original with Syd Barrett as the front man -- after all, he wrote this music.

It is so good to see someone react to the early Floyd material. It is also very pleasing to see their music being loved.
The song is written by Syd Barrett. From their first album Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
this show was recorded at KQED - was a check sound and preparation to a serie of gigs - , a tv channel from California . it wasnt on Montreaux.
These guys came from another planet. Seriously.
You should react to the last PF concert in Live 8 2005. Last time the World saw them together.

The list of Pink Floyd songs that I like almost seems endless. Astronomy Domine is definitely one of my favorites.

Loved it ! Great reaction:)

Just FYI - Domine rhymes with astronomy.
The black and white video with Syd is better in my opinion. A bit clearer too
this is SID BARRETTS BEST SONG FOR SURE
British beat, 1967, Syd Barrett, psychedelic.
Have you watched the movie Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii?
The mix of slow to fast and drum build up and overall style is built on what led zepplin created. So many bands copied their style.
Considering this song is older than led zeppelin (the band ) you are completely wrong. Floyd were light years ahead of zep and I consider zep my second favourite band.
