I couldn't wait to hear that perfect riff in acoustic, and then he does it with an harmonica!! PURE BRILLIANCE! I'm still shaking thanks for posting this
It is a bottleneck. A cylinder of porcelain or metal. It is used when sliding up and down the fret board. Instead of altering the pitch of the strings in the normal manner (by pressing the string against frets), a slide is placed upon the string to vary its vibrating length, and pitch. This slide can then be moved along the string without lifting, creating continuous transitions in pitch. Hope that helps.
Love the standard original - love this too despite the guitar piece being so positively prominent in the original. Well done Elbow - all power to ya ;0)
@kingsnumberone According to a friend of mine, as the song is in Dminor you'll want to get a harmonica in F... I'm trying to learn the song on harmonica too so I'll let you know how it goes!
@apbloom1 is there anywhere online i could learn harmonica? i've got a miniature one...and i know nothing about it lol, any help would be just grand, thanks :)
Has it got to the point where people have to be told what slide guitar is? seriously has real music died out that much? Lets just be thankful that bands like Elbow are keeping it alive and stop having a narrow minded approach to music. Putting it into genre and saying its not real blues because they're from England lmao It's music, everything has been done once by now and Elbow are more pub rock if you want to talk in those terms. Its good music I think we can all tell the difference? maybe not.
ok, what is this style called? It seems like some form of blues, but it's not quite delta blues, it's definitely not chicago or texas blues, and it's not quite the same as most blues rock. Is there a word for this style, with the repetitive chanting, lack of 12 bar form, the droning, and that gritty resonator guitar sound or whatever? I want to hear more like this but every type of blues I look up is either driving 12 bars or slow soulful 12, can't find this chanting
In C Harp, I guess it's 4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d 4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d 4b 4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d 4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d 4b 4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d 6b 4d 4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d 4b then long 4d
Im not condemning them for not having my taste, I'm condemning them for talking about a subject they clearly have no knowledge on and generally making uneducated comments. But each to their own yes

Commenting 9 years later just to say "fuck this guy."
They should have used a really nasty, gritty blues mic to the harmonica to get closer to the dirty and fat effect on the guitar.
This song is for drinking!
@dialkia1 Yeah, but its still is epic
well fuck me he can play harmonica on top of everything else hes talented at
i take my hat off to you Guy
House M.D

i didn't think this would work acoustic... how wrong i was.
In C Harp, I guess it's
4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d
4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d 4b
4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d
4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d 4b
4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d 6b 4d
4d(bend) 4b 3d 3b 4d 4b then long 4d
@TheDefiantBadger then you haven't listened to true, deep southern, blues music and probably need to update your musical dictionary.
If anyone wants the tabs send me message with your email address attached and i can send it.
