Great video! Hunter Bishops struggles sting the most for me because he is local and had those parallels to Bonds. Actually your video on him was how I discovered your channel back in 2019.
Great video Erik. Hopefully Bishop figures it out and can stay healthy. Also hoping Heliot Ramos gets a real shot to play everyday next season. It sadly may not be with SF... Bart will be a serviceable catcher, just not a star like we were hoping for. Bailey is for real though.
I cant get over the dude saying "senzel doesnt deserve to make another dime playing baseball" like i get it if you dont want him on your team, but why are you acting like the dude slept with your wife or something lol
I wonder what would've happened with Bart if Posey didn't take 2020 off. Considering Posey played in 2021 that would have given Bart a solid 2 extra years to hone his craft at Triple-A before he ever got called up to the majors. Another player who might've been good for this list is the pitcher that the Marlins got in the JJ Bleday trade. AJ Puk. He was the #6 pick in the Nick Senzel draft. At the time he was considered a bargain for the A's at #6 because most people had Puk going #1 overall. As a 6'7" tall power pitching left handed starting pitcher a lot of people called Puk the next Randy Johnson and even went as far to say that the only difference was Puk was stronger ans more muscular than the Big Unit. Puk couldn't stay healthy though and after he was traded to the Marlins this season eventually settled into a bullpen role. Very disappointing for a projected #1 overall pick hailed as the next Randy Johnson. I think Puk might have actually spent time as the Marlins closer some this season though so I guess he's not a total bust. Another honorable mention is the #3 overall pick taken right after Nick Senzel and a few spots ahead of AJ Puk in that same draft. The Braves drafted Ian Anderson #3 overall and it lookes like it was paying off at first. He had at least one good season and even pitched well in the playoffs. I believe that might have been 2021 when the Braves won the World Series. His future looked very bright. But then in 2022 Ian Anderson pitched horribly and spent the year bouncing back and forth between the majors and the minors. Then before this past season even started he had to undergo Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2023 season and is expectes to miss a big chunk of next season as well. Just like Nick Senzel amd Joey Bart that's not exactly what you would want or expect from a top 3 overall first round draft pick. Great video Erik Hummmmmmmm Baby!
Overall the 2016 draft has been full of busts in the first round. Moniak, Senzel, Anderson, Puk have all made the majors, but can’t keep starting jobs or take that next step. Hopefully more guys develop and have fruitful careers
After hearing Scherzer talk about how the whole league system is rigged towards the owners, (owners who don't spend btw), it's honestly SHOCKING how this isn't factored in when people talk about how the league FAILS to market itself. Owners collude and drive ticket prices up while shooing away fans with ridiculous rule and schedule changes.
Are you saying that players are failing due to bad organizations? Im not totally sure where ticket prices and rule changes factor in exactly. But ya badly run organizations can ruin players.
July 9, 2024 update: the only one of these who is having a solid 2024 MLB season is Jarred Kelenic. Moniak bust status reinstated- he’s hitting .196 with four home runs.
If I was on the Angels rn, I'd run to Japan or Korea for a few years to reestablish myself and take in some amazing culture and food while making a few million. The Angels need a new and better owner. Its a shame how they've been mismanaged.
As a Phillies fan, I was thinking Moniak should be on the list but I know a lot of people believed he proved him self in 2023. And here he was #1 on your list. Dude was on fire in June and July but definitely cooled off in august and barley played in September. We shall see, but he definitely will have a ton of opportunity, especially if the angels do trade trout.
He cooled off because he was playing hurt, but he finished hot. Played great defense. Ran the bases well. He's for real. Philly is a lot of pressure. He came back home and it's a lot more low key. Close to his parents and friends. I think his play wasn't a fluke.
Bart isn't a bust...yet. Problem is, he needs to play to prove he's not a bust. The only way he plays is if Patrick Bailey gets hurt/becomes a bust himself or Bart gets traded and excels elsewhere. Bart may be in the " needs a change of scenery " club Too soon to call Kelenic a bust, but, this is his make or break year. More proof that, in baseball, scouting/player evaluation-development is as much art as it is science Excellent as usual Erik
I think Kelenic (like a lot of minor leaguers) hampered their development & progress cause the COVID 2020 year was canceled. But Kelenic tore it up the first 2 months of 2023 but slowed down afterwards. He did though strikeout a ton still. He’s still penciled in for the Mariners in their everyday lineup. He should bat no higher than 6th though.
As a Phillies fan I absolutely HATED the fact that we gave up on Mickey Moniak so quickly! Moniak in just a couple yrs had dealt with injuries, but he looked phenomenal in the ‘22 spring training, hitting .378 with 6 HR’s, along with scoring 11 runs and 11 RBI’s. Than in the Phillies final spring training game Moniak broke his thumb knocking him out of his starting position in CF. All in all I’m really happy to see him doing so well with the Angels, I hope he keeps it up, just not when we play him!..
First name that came to mind for me was Austin beck from Oakland. At least some of these guys made it to the majors, beck hasn’t even really had a good season in the minors if he hasn’t been released yet.
I'm no Kelenic fan but I think there's a different between a bust and quadA. Kelenic likely isn't a bust but probably is quadA. He can't hit an MLB breaking ball, he struggles with certain fastballs, and looks lost at the plate against better than average stuff. None of that really changed in 2023, doubt it ever will. My hope is the Mariners will trade him rather than depend on him to be an everyday guy. I don't see that going very well by seasons end.
Tho too early, I’d like to add Emerson Hancock as a HM. Tho just making his debut this year, he has struggled with injury before 2023 and was passed up by Miller, Woo, and having Tommy Milne make spots starts before him being an option isn’t a good look. And only pitching due to last resort and pitching 3 games while looking mediocre at best isn’t that good. Still have high hopes as an M’s fan but he may be pushed out due to the thriving young arms and Marco and Robbie back in support of the off season rumors of Snell and other pitchers
Even though he was just drafted this summer Blake Mitchell needs to be catching in AA by the end of this season for the Royals or he will end up being a bust.
Great video Erik! I think Kelenic is far from a bust. He struggled his first two seasons but last season (minus the boneheaded kicking of the water cooler) he was on his way to a solid season. I would swap him out with Seth Beer
Had suuuuuch high hopes for Joey Bart, but, as a former catcher myself, I knew from the first game I saw him in, he wasn't the guy. Good-ish hitter, but not MLB caliber. Awkward behind the dish. Average arm, especially for a big guy. Blake Sabol is the goods, though. He ain't Buster, but he ain't a bust.
Excellent review!! Great videos!! Looking now at SF, likely they hesitate on bellinger, due to term, chapman, due to Casey schmitt, and jd, davis. Miss out on Ohtani, he's in win now mode. Soto, Burnes 1 year rentals? No. Take a chance on Lee? Never has SF been linked to Hoskins. No hitters, no series. In SF, I'd go pitching! Yamamoto, snell. That's a good rotation. Cobb may come back, so I'd check in on Bauer. SF home grown players are frauds. Not a star amongst them. Better to go defense.
Jo ”The Future of Baseball" Adell Home Run error. ruclips.net/user/shortsUKLA5GEVAnc?feature=share Alex Anthopoulos traded for Kelenic. I have faith in his eye for talent. They apparently plan to hit him 8th or 9th and just let him play everyday with very little pressure.
To be fair just about every first rounder in 16 has been a bust. Worst draft class maybe in history. You could make the argument that pavin Smith is one of the top 3 most productive players taken in the first round. Not a conformation of smith he's been awful but damn was that class terrible.
Pitchers are like QB's. Most of them bust. Especially high school pitchers. If I were a gm drafting I'd prioritize position players and sign or trade for established pitchers.

OPS my man. OPS. Batting average doesn't tell us much. Thanks for a cool video.

Why would he be on the list .280/14 homers/.802 ops doesn't belong in that category

He’s out of minor league options and Patrick Bailey is not gonna lose the starting job to him. He’ll probably have to prove himself elsewhere.

I feel like it’s already over for Joey Bart, at least in SF. I would be pretty surprised to see him on the giants 40 man come spring training.
As of now he probably will be considering we have only Bailey and Sabol
His trade value has dried up considerably. I get not wanting to get rid of guys, especially a top 2 pick, but this is scary.
I just realized the music cuts out in the middle of the video. Premeire pro error. Oh well.
