The thing about American criminals and people of this kind is that this is eventually going to be in his favor. For one he's right. He's free he doesn't need to lie any more. The fact that he pleaded guilty to a campaign finance violation (misdemeanor) does not mean that he actually committed the crime. He threw in that plea in exchange for a reduced sentence. Clients sign a Representation agreement for the attorney to handle the case, explaining due process, charges, etc. But a lawyer can quit, for the reasons stated or if the client refuses to pay attorney fees.

Lets assume "Trump Knew" the payments were wrong as Cohen suggests in desperation. Thats not at issue. Did Cohen know the payments were wrong and continue to undertake the task knowing full well by his own admission it was wrong? Trump knowing it was wrong is speculative. No one can admit such evidence of reading a witnesses mind as admissible evidence. It is speculative.
But what Cohen is now saying is that he Cohen knew it was wrong and did it regardless (for money) and that his defence to doing something wrong as an attorney was that "Trump directed him do it". "The Devil made me do it is no defence at law. Not for an attorney at least. The rules are clear.
You withdraw from acting if your client gives you improper or unlawful instructions. Cohen has sewed himself up and should be charged for perjury, contempt, misleading the inquiry and for wilfully doing something wrong. He should be struck off the rolls of attorneys and never allowed to practice.

there is no attorney client privilege when a legal infraction or a legal wrong is committed, a lawyer can be held accountable by the respective state bar or the judiciary if he is seen as an agent of illegal means, i.e. if he or she aided and/or abetted illegal activities, performed by his client.
E.g.: If a client forces the attorney to commit perjury or misrepresent facts known to be falsehoods in a court of law, the attorney can waive away the privilege bestowed upon the client by law.
E.g. 2: Confidentiality is instituted for the purposes of full disclosures and safety of clients from malicious prosecution. But if the info or act presented by a client is harmful to society or individuals therein at large, the confidentiality clause maybe breached. Just like if you were to confess to a psychiatrist your intent to murder individuals or a particular individual, they can inform the authority of such an intent and have you committed barring standard proceedings.

In a case where the attorney is found guilty (or pleads guilty) to crimes committed in service of a client, the attorney client privilege can be pierced by prosecutors. Otherwise you could easily abuse attorney client privilege to prevent prosecutors from holding people accountable for crimes.
Attorney client privilege is a very important part of almost all Western legal systems, but it also has to be implemented right because it’s potential for abuse is strikingly obvious

Trump was paying him generously to do his dirty work, plus he was using his connection to Trump to illegally line his own pocket with millions by promising access to Trump, which he never delivered on. I think he was holding out for word of a pardon, but once he heard Trump distancing himself from him, that's when he began to worry. That's what caused him to turn. He even lied by pretending that he saw the real Trump when Trump capitulated to Putin in Helsinki. Sure.
