- There's a pattern that's been formed amongst those classic, iconic luxury bags we know and love and that pattern doesn't really have to do with the bags at all... it has to do with the iconic women who have worn and loved them. This video is inspired by @Geminisknowitbetter on TikTok and I delve into 6 examples of classic designer bags and how they cemented themselves in fashion history and if this can be done in 2023...or are we too far gone?...ENJOY!

As an anthropologist, I think you’re right on the money! We humans are motivated by stories, and owning such a bag allows us to become part of a larger story that includes these iconic women (whether consciously or not).
To add on, I think that once Coco Chanel herself became an icon, the lore of her carrying love letters in the pocket of her 2.55 became the story that still adds to the allure of the Classic Flap and Reissue today.
I use my *preluxs* as a work bag and have had no issues at all. It’s a comfortable bag, fits a good amount and hadn’t lost its shape. With that being said, I also take care of all my bags and don’t carry a water bottle, pens, keys or anything that can damage the interior.

My first knowledge of Fendi was in the late 80’s when LL “Around the way girl” wanted a girl with bamboo earrings, at least two pairs, a Fendi bag and a bad attitude. Girl!!!! I bought my first Fendi for something like $150 which was expensive back then. I’ve been a Fendi Ho ever since 🤣🤣🤣🤣

You’re right, of course, the iconic bags are cemented as iconic because the wearer is/was an iconic woman. I’m not sure we will have that person anymore. There are tons of very popular celebrities, but are there any icons? I think the pool is sort of diluted by celebrity over saturation, social media, etc. It will be fun to watch and see if anything emerges and holds its status over the decades. There is this young British woman, now living in NYC, stylish, funny and charming who certainly seems on the cusp… ❤

You know a lot about luxury accessories and bags. It is obvious that you have conducted due diligence and the comparison information with the United States is very rich... I live in New York, thank you very much. I like*preluxs* .
I think the fact that it by the fact that the women wore the bag all the time indicates that they actually loved the bag and it was not something they were paid to use so we believe it to be more genuine. A lot of the original icons seem to be fans of the bag/brand prior to association and bought it on their own. With today's celebrity marketing, i don't see it being replicated.
Closest would probably be Mary Kate and her City bag.
Agree celebrities wear lots of different bags these days than just one bag
It could also mean that we weren't into such hyper consumer culture, not to mention celebrities get more PR now adays, so they have a lot of choices
I'm a y2k girlie so in my mind "iconic celebrity bags" are Paris Hilton and the Dior Saddle, the Olsen twins and Balenciaga Motorcycle/Givenchy Nightingale... probably inaccurate but that's what pops into my head

Totally agree - luxury fashion is becoming more and more like fast fashion in the sense that there's constantly so much new stuff coming out that not many people (let alone celebrities/iconic women) would need or want to keep carrying the same bag. Social media also plays a big part - let's face it, we as the audience always want to see the latest items rather than the same thing over and over again. Hence, celebrities and influencers would often feature new releases/trend pieces as opposed to a potentially "classic" or "iconic" item.
Leave it to Cassie to parse the distinction between classic and iconic in her video, love and appreciate her.

Such a well thought out video as always Cassie! Learned so many new things. You’re so right about how before all these rigid social media contracts celebrities back then wore the same bag all the time - over and over, but now there are celebrities that are specific bag ambassadors (ie zendaya and capucines). which makes you question if they truly use the bag or it’s just for the moment. So you don’t have the person tied to the bag Bc it’s constantly changing.

The Gucci Diana is another classic, and seeing how similar the design is to the Lady Dior, it makes sense that Princess Diana loved both.

Yes, it makes complete sense. Today there are way too many influences. Those iconic women of the past wore the same bag over and over again. There are a few fashion influencers who wear certain bags repeatedly citing the cost per wear. Even then, they have rotations of various luxury bags.
It doesn't matter where they are made. It depends on artisans and quality inspection. My family and I have bought 2 *rrcopys* bags in the past 3 years and I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

Princess Diana could have carried a tesco bag with a hole in the bottom and made it chic. What an iconic, beautiful soul she was… but her sense of style was definitely something one can’t overlook. The revenge dress? Her casual wear? Legend.
I was thinking of Balenciaga a moment before you mentioned it. I think another key thing is that women of the past who made these bags iconic were also HIGHLY classy women, who also dressed in a very classy way. Today we are hard pressed to find someone with that same aesthetic. Something about the eras and dressing of the past is timeless and classic, which matches the vibe of the bag. Exactly why these ladies probably fell in love with these bags to begin with, and of course their practicality. Just my opinion though.

I used to think that owning a luxury bag was an unattainable dream, until *gtdupe* told me that this dream is actually very close. The sense of fashion comes not only from the brand, but also from personal matching and attitude.

The history of each bag such as chanel classic flap, speedy, and Kelly is what draw me into loving and watching theses bags. So to me they will always stand the test of time, even if they’re style has been overdone.
I think it's so interesting that all the iconic bags were created so long before the internet and social media- like while influencers try to make bags iconic now, all these women did so without the internet and their legacies have endured so long after they're gone- minus the sex and the city characters of course- but they're characters not real people which i think is also really interesting.

In the weeks since the episode aired, searches for “Burberry tote bag” have jumped 310%.
Searches for “Burberry handbag” are up 180%, while “Burberry tote” increased 25%.
I love this and i like when i see bags really getting used. Nowadays we have too many in our collection that we only use a couple of them once.

I read that Audrey Hepburn asked Louis Vuitton to make a smaller Keepall for her to use along with a purse when she traveled. They created the Speedy 30. If you look at the photograph it does not look like a 25.

Absolutely spot on! We’re so diluted by too many bag releases, influencers & reality stars. Nothing currently stands out as a classic “it” bag. I own a Lady Dior, Chanel Diana, Gucci Diana, Gucci Jackie & a Birkin. Also an LV Alma (the only bag Coco Chanel carried that wasn’t her own label). Love my classics!!!! Interesting to note that there isn’t a “Megan” (Markle) bag… she doesn’t have the same mojo.
Megan has carried a range of very nice bags which match her outfits. I haven’t seen much personality or repetition in her bags. I feel all her outfits are selected by her stylist and are quite safe (they sometimes carry political messages too, eg she recently wore a bucket bag by Cesta Collective that’s “handcrafted by female artisans in Rwanda”)
There isn’t a Catherine bag either

I think in order to have an iconic bag, there's also a need to let time do the work.
Brands are forcing things today. Even an iconic bag can have it down moments.
When we think about the Lady Dior. Designed under Gianfranco Ferre, had a little success in the late 90's but was replaced by the saddle in the 00's to comeback in full force in the late 00's. Dior always kept the production even when it wasn't trendy.
One thing that makes it difficult to have an iconic bag today is the fact that celebrities don't dress themselves. They all have stylists. So, whatever they wear might not be representative of their aesthetic.
All the women you mentioned except maybe Carrie Bradshaw (for obvious reasons), wore their own clothes, dressed for themselves and the bags became iconic because they just happened to be there when the paparazzi chased them.
Love how you broke this down! I do think that because of endorsements, campaigns, etc that it will be very hard to find a person with that ONE bag that they always carry. Social media also has this weird stigma about outfit repeating (which I think is going away). I was having a discussion with my husband how some walk-in closets can be deemed as "too small" for some people when just a few years ago, we had to buy armoires for our clothes. Our wardrobes has exploded in size so therefore, we no longer just have those one or two things that we cherish as we now have 20 of the same things (I'm generalizing here). Good topic!

The only celebrity/bag combo nowadays I see becoming truly one, is Keira Knightley, and the Chanel boy wallet on chain. But even then, she wears a variety of Chanel bags, and although she has forged a synonymous everlasting connection with Chanel. She hasn't really with a specific bag; as she wears a variety of there bags.

Love this type of video from you, Cassie! I think you are absolutely right about the repetition and how that made the bags more popular. There's also an old Hollywood mystique associated with the bags that celebrities today don't embody. That being said I've seen a few videos where Halle Bailey is using the Gucci horsebit bag and I could see her popularizing it. She has a certain femininity and grace that is not often seen anymore in celebrities. (Not That celebrities have to be that way, there's no wrong way to be! I just think she reminds me of that old Hollywood glam).
I think the only celebrity I know who embodies class while not at work is Dita Von Tease. I would love to know what bags she carries!
