  • The chest-rattling 6pm horn sounding aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. We were staying aboard as part of a cross-country road trip (and of course the QM was a natural fit for us). Even though we were ready for the intensity of the blast, having heard it several times a day for two days, we couldn't keep our hands from shaking when the horn sounded. An amazing experience!

    “In The wind, warm night the horn is startingly Pure and magical. Then from the North River another horn solo begins - the Queen Mary announcing her intentions. She is not on key; she is a half tone off. The trumpeter in the bandstand never flinches. The horns quarrel savagely, but no one minds having the imitation of travel injected into the pledge of love. “I leave,” sobs Mary. “ and I will pledge with mine,” sighs the trumpeter.” - E.B.White, “Here is New York”

    Yes her 3 original whistles were steam powered. Of the 2 you see in this video only 1 works and it has been converted to sound by air. The 3rd whistle which would have been mounted on the 2nd funnel (the mount can been seen a the :34 mark is aboard Queen Mary 2 and it too fires on air now. There is a great picture on the Queen Mary facebook page where you can see the steam pipes that fed the whistles.

    @ThePhantomFanatic It's amazing. We were so ready for it, and I *still* couldn't keep my hands from shaking when it went off. Fully involuntary; that's how much power the sound carried. One can only imagine what it would have sounded like with steam, and with both horns firing!

  • @BrandonHann
    @BrandonHann 11 лет назад +1

    What's even crazier is that the Queen Mary originally had three steam-driven whistles (the third was located on the second smoke stack and is now aboard the Queen Mary 2). I'm pretty sure it would have been much louder in her sailing days! Today, the remaining two whistles are air-driven which makes for a slightly different sound.

    @Rocky54167 They are steam horns, technically Tyfon steam sirens. Due to the fact the boilers were removed when she was converted into a floating hotel/restaurant/museum, there's no steam source left, hence why they use air now

    My pleasure. Yes, the boilers and her forward engine room were removed and scrapped when she was converted, although there is a plan in the works to restore a couple of her boiler rooms to their original condition, with the appearance that the ship is under way and under steam once again. It's called the Yarrow Project, so named after the company that made the QMs boilers, one of which will a complete replica, potentially operational, to be placed among the rest, which will be facsimiles/dummies

    Supposedly, yes. There's even a room that isn't let out any more because of all the disturbances that have occurred. However, not all purported spirits on the QM are so unfriendly, one person described a ghost of a woman, who was quite friendly to the current guests, having told them that she had enjoyed many happy voyages on the ship.
    Another ghost, that of a Cunard Line officer, purportedly hangs about the bridge, apparently still making his rounds of the ship he sailed when he was alive.

    Be glad she's still around at all, for most ocean liners don't get to end their lives as comfortably as the QM has. QM is the only liner of her period to survive, all the rest have either been broken up or sunk.
    I know your frustration though, I'd love to visit the National Railway Museum in York, or visit the many preserved steam railways in Britain, but alas, the UK is beyond my travel budget at the moment, as is the QM.

  • @Shipwright1918
    @Shipwright1918 12 лет назад

    Well, besides the fact that these are Tyfons, I do know that only one of the two Tyfons on the funnel is sounded anymore, the lower tone of the two-note "chime". I have an old recording of the QM sounding her Tyfons, and if you compare the sound to that the ship makes today, the absence of the higher siren is distinctly noticeable.
    In service, these Tyfons were reputed to be capable of being heard at 10 miles away, although they were configured so as not to disturb the passengers when sounded

      In the movie 🎬 the hindenburg the rigid airship is seen flying over new york harbor and the queen Mary 👸 is also seen sailing up new york harbor heading straight towards it's berth at the Cunard pier 59 the same pier were the Cunard liner carpathia had dropped off 712 survivor's from the sunken wreck of the titanic but instead of the carpathia dropping the survivor's of f at the Cunard pier 59 like everyone thought the carpathia would do the carpathia sailed straight up new york harbor to the pier of the white star line's and not only dropped the survivor's off at the white star line's pier but the carpathia also unloaded the titanic's lifeboats at the white star line's pier as well and as of today thier are no longer any titanic survivor's alive the last titanic survivor melvina dean died a couple of years ago at the age of only 104 years old she was only 8 months old when she was placed in a gunny/potato sack and tossed into a lifeboat that was being lowered down the starboard side of the titanic, melvina dean was cremated and her ashes were scattered across the wreck site of the r.m.s. titanic, now who ever would believe that the maiden voyage of the r.m.s. titanic from southampton, england to new york u.s.a. would turn out to be the titanic's very last voyage?..... .

      Entity no, she serves as a hotel. Tbh, I think making her seem "haunted" was a marketing plot to attract customers. All of the staff currently onboard think it's nonsense, and the ship suddenly became "haunted" right as she exited Cunard service.

    whats annoying is that this wonderful vessel is in America. Thats not bad, but it was built in Britain. I just don't feel comfortable seeing a British legend in America. But what can I do? Nothing. I suppose the big American museums don't want anybody else to have one-of-a-kind's, even the place they came from. :(

      still_guns Let’s just be happy that the ship is preserved rather than scrapped.

      still_guns It'd be nice if Queen Mary was docked in Britain. I honestly think that if the RMS Olympic was still around, she'd probably take Queen Mary's current spot.

    And why is it annoying? She's got a safe anchorage, she's looked after like the grand old lady she is, and she has many devoted fans and visitors who think the world of her. And the City of Long Beach, which owns the QM, has no intention of letting anything bad happen to her, either, so she's in good hands.
    And you lot have some one-of-a-kind ships too, such as Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia, and the legendary HMS Victory, to say nothing of the SS Great Britain, HMS Warrior, the Cutty Sark, etc.
