The actual story is a bit more complicated than that. The Eli Lilly drug rep actually realized about three years before the guy was caught that the pharmacist might be up to something after noting a large difference between the wholesale and retail amounts that the pharmacist was selling, and the rep turned that information over to Eli Lilly who did an investigation, but then closed the case. Then, three years later nurses at that oncologist office were concerned by the fact that some of their patients did not show some of the debilitating chemotherapy side effects that they are used to seeing in cancer patients and brought that concern over to the drug rep and their doctor. She then had the drugs tested herself and then contacted the FBI (who initially did not believe her as this kind of scheme would be crazy for anyone to carry out). Eli Lilly ended up paying almost $50 million (equivalent to about $80 million today) in damages as a result of this case.

To think, a pillar in his church, working in health care, and killing his neighbors - thousands of them -- slowly. Smiling in their faces, I can only imagine.
As a daughter, care taker of 2 elderly parents & as a human being I want to give you my sincerest condolences. There is absolutely nothing I can say that would make you feel one ounce better. As the wife of a of retail pharmacist, from a family of retail pharmacists & the niece of an oncology pharmacist (there is a difference) I want you to know how much this sickens me. Please, please, please don’t think this is the norm in the profession, but like any other profession, sadly, there are good & bad. My husband literally grew up in a pharmacy, his family had 2 family pharmacies in a rural community until 2000. To this day I have seen him call his wholesalers, competing pharmacies to see if they have a medication OR if they can get a medication. At 58 years old he still employs the values he was taught growing up… if you don’t provide the people with their medication-who will and what could the consequences be for that person. In 1970, his father drove over an hour, in the middle of the night, to the state line to meet a state policeman to obtain formula for a very sick infant that couldn’t be bought, at that time, in our state. For him this was a norm…to do whatever had to be done to help the patient. Little did he know that infant would grow up to be his daughter in law. Lol. I have seen my husband take people in the consolation room to fill out paperwork for patients who didn’t have the skills to do so themselves. I’ve seen him go to doctor’s offices to show the staff how to fill out forms for a patient, so their insurance would pay for a certain medication, on his day off. I’ve also seen him pay for a patient’s medication because they didn’t have the money. Most of these things are the perks of a rural community. So, to hear a of a pharmacist diluting medication, especially at an oncology clinic is absolutely disgusting. This man shouldn’t get out early… he should be placed under the prison. My only hope is he was let out into General Population but somehow I’m sure he was locked away where no one could get to him. Please, never be afraid to advocate for yourself or a loved one if you feel there is something a miss. Again, from the bottom of my heart I am so incredibly sorry you had to go through this, it’s is disgusting. 😔💔❤️🩹❤️
@@VitoAnthonyD.-ow7oo- It’s pretty depressing when I read your comment and I see that there is a lack of “capacity“, I will phrase it that way to be more polite. He was sentenced over 20 years ago. And he was sentenced for a non-violent crime. It is what it is. And the last guy who is an office who signed this law should have made a little bit more discretion where the judge could veto a release in situations like this. Because plea deals like this happen all the time in order to ensure the jury does not default to not guilty in a situation where they can afford lawyers with a silver tongue. So this should’ve been foreseen and should’ve had some kind of escape valve.
Justice once again was shorted by the release of a man that was personally and intentionally responsible for killing possibly thousands of people leaving him with the title of the highest serial killer of all time and gets to walk away. Shame on the heinous court decision to allow him to walk out with his freedom and stating he was eligible due to his "non violent " ways in prison and "non violent charges" on his conviction. May I remind the state of Kansas that he killed hundreds if not thousands of people through abuse and intentional misuse of his profession that people entrusted him with all for the reason of living outside his means and total financial greed. If this isn't isn't a blatant miscarriage of injustice, I don't know what is.
This type of thing happens more than we know. My Dad had cancer, and when my Mom went to pick his pain medicine up. They told her it was already picked up. Someone at the pharmacy was stealing.
Also when picking up pain medicine, the customer should immediately count the tablets to verify they got the correct total. Do the count standing in front of the pharmacist. Carry a ziplock bag to lay on the counter so you have a clean surface. This protects you as once you leave the counter, the pharmacist won't take any complaints seriously.
@@happycook6737 A friend of mine started counting her pills after she noticed that her pain meds ran out over a week sooner that they were supposed to. The pharmacy (Walgreen's) accused her of doing sleight of hand at the counter when she counted out her pills and 10 were missing.
My old pharmacy used to mix up my scripts with other people's, including my own sister. Or they'd dispense the wrong thing. I once found someone else's paper script in with mine. I took it back to the pharmacy, and just as I was handing it over, the lady it belonged to, came in looking for it. Shouting your medical info across the pharmacy is another one.
@@deathbycheese850Stuff like that needs to be reported to state and Federal authorities immediately. It sounds like the store was using normal cashiers to work in the pharmacy instead of licensed pharmacists and trained technicians.
That’s a very reductive way at explaining the situation. It’s not about money, as in Mexico. It’s about having enough money to buy the best lawyers who will play games with the jury’s heads which could lead to a not guilty verdict. It’s called making the best out of a bad situation. And had the first step back had a little bit more discretion, he would still be in prison. And he most likely would pass away in prison, because it’s hard to live to an old age in prison just because of environmental issues.
I’m a pharmacist I went into this partly because my mother had cancer and it was a goal of mine to understand and help people. My opinion is, he is a serial killer and should go to jail for life without parole at a minimum and that’s also my opinion as a daughter of a mother who died of a terminal cancer.

As the words and 2 cents of another cannot magically destroy who someone is. The only thing that can destroy a person, is said person.
I agree with you and I’d like to add this.. if she ever decides to forgive him so that she can move forward.. it’s for her and not for him. He never needs to know.
No one can be forced to forgive. It's personal to the individual and only they can truly forgive it it's within them. Being forced to say it means nothing.
@@HelenByrd-yf9cf it might mean something to the person who was forced by a loved one to say the words. It can really mess someone up to be pressured into considering their own internal feelings as “abnormal,” or a character flaw.

I just want to say that the pharmacist has no control over what insurance pays for. What you pay at a retail pharmacy is completely up to your insurance. You & your friend can have different insurances and be on the same medication but you probably pay different price. Your insurance may pay for the brand and your friends insurance may only pay for generic. The store & pharmacist has nothing at all to do with that.

“…out of prison…early…”. Broken record. Accountability doesn’t exist, so crime just continues to climb. “Over crowding” damn right. Make it so crowded that we can go back to shopping retail without everything being locked behind glass. Without punishment, there is no path to reduction. More crime will be committed, sending more people to prison, creating more over crowding, allowing early release, lessening accountability for crimes, increasing the crimes committed, sending more to prison, more over crowding, more early release, less accountability, increased crime, higher prison population, early release….
It was the nurses, not the doctor, who caught the grift. Thank you nurses.
He murdered untold numbers of people and walks free. Outrageous!!!! A serial killer and he goes free!!!
This is what people should be peacefully protesting in America………
@@wrenbyrd1093i guess we'll put it "on the list"
How do you qualify as a non-violent offender when you effectively killed hundreds of people?
Because we're living in the stupidest generation in fking history.
Title should say 'Serial killer beats the system." 😮
💯💯💯💯💯
If I was a juror, death penalty within 24 hours. Unacceptable!
Well said. I agree.
Steal a loaf of bread, you get 10 years in Prison.
Steal a billion dollars, you get elected to public office.
Ironically drug dealers get longer sentences.
Not defending drug dealers, but just a thought.
@@happycook6737thanks, I will start doing this from this point forward.
The people in the system who made this decision should be called out for sheer stupidity at taxpayers expense.
The millions of dollars he stole is being used to buy his way out of prison! Life is not fair.
that is wild
In America, justice is only for the rich and then the rich buy the justice they want.
Well he better not have been able to retain or invest any of that money, nor should anyone in his family be able to! Good lord!!!
@@iMatti00 shut up
I’m a pharmacist I went into this partly because my mother had cancer and it was a goal of mine to understand and help people.
My opinion is, he is a serial killer and should go to jail for life without parole at a minimum and that’s also my opinion as a daughter of a mother who died of a terminal cancer.
Be sad for him if he got cancer and was refused any cancer drugs.
Cancer dope is poison anyways, some of it is made with left overs from abortions.;

As the words and 2 cents of another cannot magically destroy who someone is. The only thing that can destroy a person, is said person.
He shouldn't have been allowed to plea. He's a murderer.
So this guy is one of the most prolific mass killers and is being let go?! Kansas needs the name(s) of who made this decision.
This is sick. As a breast cancer survivor, the man is lucky patients family members haven't come after him. Unconscionable, what a socio/psychopath.😥
The future is not written. Someone might visit him soon.
This guy should have met O'Sparky.
I’ve never heard of this case. I live across the country. This monster should rot in prison without any prescriptions he may need.
He should never see the light of day and should have been tried! I HATE PLEA DEALS!
*Never tell a victim that they need to forgive. That’s not true, & forcing forgiveness is ALWAYS unhealthy.*
Forgiveness depends on the repentance of the perpetrator. If he's unrepentant, then how can he be forgiven? Even God doesn't forgive an unrepentant sinner.
This is outrageous‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️How many precious souls died because of his cowardly actions. He murdered thousands upon thousands‼️‼️‼️‼️ Our justice system is, actually, broken‼️‼️‼️‼️

Poisoning 78.000 prescriptions may not be a "violent" offense, but 3 years? I call BS.
I remember seeing this on Dateline... I thought to myself... This guy will never get out of prison.... And here he is..... I'm just wondering what his family thinks of him... If he has a family..
Do you realize that folk have been buying folk for ages. If the average person was really repulsed by what they know and come to know about others, you wouldn’t be hearing about crap like this.
How could killing that many people because of greed be nonviolent? That statement that it was nonviolent, is insane.
Plea bargains must stop.
Plea bargains and early parole both need to stop.
He should never be out of prison ever.
The family should’ve brought a lawsuit against him and taken everything he had!
Everything he had may have been subject to seizure/forfeiture as the proceeds of a crime.

Problem was with the plea deal, not The First Step Act. He should not qualify
Damn lawyers don't care about justice just about winning and about $$.
Problem is the plea deal would have been the best they could get. If they went to trial on murder, they would lose since there is no way to prove his dilution of the drugs were the direct cause of the deaths. So the alternative option is him getting not guilty and not getting 30 years
Anybody who has watched a love one die from cancer will tell you their suffering was violent! The NEEDLESS pain and suffering was violent! Do not allow this man to be released! CALL and WRITE your senators ans representatives plus the DA!
I would assume this happens much more often, because greed is so rampant.
A local walmart routinely shorts my neighbor on his pain meds. Someone is making money doing this.
@alphabravo8703 no...Walmart would have this person count them before he leaves once he brought that accusation. I'm a retired certified pharmacy tech and that is what we done. Sounds like someone trying to get more pain meds than they should get.
An electronic construct just told a pack of lies.
Greed should never be allowed to be a concern in medical care. It should be free for all citizens.
The answer is a "not for profit" scenario. There is no "free." Somebody pays for it. Ask the Canadians how they feel about their "free" healthcare. Do you really want to pay more in taxes? And have to pay for coverage for those who abuse and do not bother to take care of themselves?

This happened at a local pharmacy in the Seattle area. My dad loved this pharmacist, he was so helpful, turned out he was giving people expired pills and diluted formulations. My dad died of a heart attack, but we will never know if there was a connection as this guy was arrested several months after he died.
Got to hope "SOCIAL MEDIA" can make this man famous on the outside so he gets the recognition he has earned! EVIL LIKE THIS NEVER DESERVES PEACE.
Why is this sociopath getting out of prison?
Please, your Doctor calls in prescriptions you go to the pharmacist and they are behind where you can't see them so you dont know if they are also diluting your meds, so they can keep calling you to come get your prescriptions. First they give you the supposed "good one" then they say your insurance only pays for the cheaper one,you never get the one they give you in ER so they can get you out of there. Its ALL about MONEY for them ALL !!!!!!!😢As soon as you are put on a med by a Doctor money goes into their accounts everytime!!Oh some of them help but down the road some hurt you more in other ways😢
