  • This thing was sort of a hack job when it comes to the head someone installed in it. It needed a couple of belts and some regular service otherwise. Very nice vintage deck working great now.

This set of skills is rapidly being lost. Thanks for showing how it gets done.

If you look at what offset printers use to clean the rubber rollers, which is plain Methyl ethyl ketone solvent, which cleans the rubber parts of all dirt and old ink residue perfectly, but does not dissolve them, the acetone works, because it evaporates fast, so there is no long contact to degrade the rubber.

You have to love the "shade-tree" backyard repair jobs amateurs do on these units before you get them on the bench!
Fortunately no nasty belt goo to clean up this time and no serious damage done. 👍👍 Not sure if this deck is part of your personal vintage collection or a customer job, but whatever it is, it sounds a lot better toward the end of the video (before the blooper reel). 😎
That deck would have been branded as "National" or "National Panasonic" in the '70s (if it was manufactured for the European/Aussie/NZ market)

Guy someone tell me i have an onkyo tx-nr616, if i replaced the two power transistors or output transistors do i need to adjust the bias because as soon as i replaced them and turned it on when placed the driver board it caused a short fire and killed both much appreciated

Nice fix. I was often surprised at how some belts decayed at a much slower rate, and could still be good after many years of use.

I think it has to do with the environment it lived in. When I worked in Southern California I noticed many more units coming in with "Gummy" stretched belts that were only a couple of years old compared to Northern California where the same unit would take 10+ years to have the same belt issues. Thank you Dave.

That makes sense. I remember someone returning her VCR for a second belt and idler wheel replacement after only one year, and I couldn't figure out how they went bad so fast, until I remembered this woman ran an ozone machine in her home, and ozone is known to make rubber deteriorate fast. @@norcal715

that NOS main drive belz was a luvky find in isable condition, sd sgeing itself can caise brittleness. think its a 70s deck, a bit old.....but look at all that mrtal....japan ic. was trying really hard back then, built to enable servicing. ..good.good work/vid!

Interesting seeing the National 'N-mark' logo embedded with the Panasonic logo that Matsushita designed for the Western export markets. I think they ran this combined branding for only a few years in the mid to late 1960's which may corroborate with your finding that no IC's seem to be used in this unit.

    What a smashing repair :-D
It sounds nice and crisp, And the playback levels are fine.
How you got a head match i don't know.
I have found that heads sometimes need more or less a.c bias to get a good recording.
And the head inductance may need a small capacitor.
Just odd things i noticed over the years.
The owner had the motor out, the motor screws were messed with, why i don't know.
