Magnavox MDR865H/F7 DVD/HDD with a possible bad Hard Drive/Bad Caps in the DVD Recorder Part 1 of ??

Taking a look at a Magnavox MDR865 Hard Disc Drive / DVD Recorder that wont play from the Hard Disc. I plan on trying another 250GB Drive I have recently formatted, that will be part 2

most there is a special Firmware on the HDD´s for Recorders, not only a special File Format

There is a software called Diskgenious that is very good and free. It would be able to show you if the computer detects the drive or not, even if it is defective and the type of formatting it has now. It may be formatted for linux, for example, and your Windows computer may not be able to recognize it natively (but that software can).

To actually see the hard drive you have to go back to home and select hard drive there under "title". I just went thru everything you just did but pressed rec with video connected, stopped after a few seconds, selected home and title and the hdd and ok to select what I recorded. All is fine. Drive is formatted.

For 100uF and less, would it be easier to replace SMT electrolytic capacitors with ceramic capacitors?

Windows will almost certainly not show the drive in explorer even if it’s working because it’s likely formatted with something like EXT3 (Linux). You’d need to look in disk management (right click start). The new drive probably needs to be blank for the recorder to recognise it as a usable drive. You can wipe the drive in windows using diskpart. Google how to use the diskpart clean command but BE CAREFUL because if you fluff it up you can erase your system drive by accident.

Ive got a sharp vc-a503 the slip clutch wont engage the drive gears any suggestions?

I have never had any success employing the freeze technique on suspect hard drives.

You can copy the whole disk to an another HDD with DDRESCUE

Hi probably is just hdd remove the board and look in to tvs
diodes of the drive.
To format drive try secrete menu skip 079 there you can format the hdd

skip 079 has no effect on this unit. I must have tried 100 times

Try formatting the Hard drive in Fat32

Only NTFS or exFat was an option. Part 2 is in the works now with a different 250Gb drive

Thats not the harddrive that goes in there it should be 3.5 harddrive

It clearly states one the interconnect board 2.5 inch, so..... no, the drive is the original factory size
