Sure we need immigrants, not illegal. And we should make immigrant procedure strictly. If we accept immigrants thoughtlessly, we will go through social problem same as other European countries.

I think it's funny how they keep on making references to Korean Women having children with foreigners. A lot of marriages I have seen with foreigners have been with Korean men and a foreign woman. Not the other way around. Just my observation. And I make it because I am a white woman who married a Korean man. I have street cred.

Because your situation is a relatively new development only in the past 10 yrs after Korea built it's cultural cred and economic cred, did men gain the option to marry foreigners. Historically, that was a priivlege reserved for women mostly, it's still that way currently in the vast majority of asian countries.

I see three patterns regarding mixed marriages involving Koreans. First, many Koreans were adopted by American families and they were raised as Americans. Chances are, they would not marry another Korean person. They almost always marry a non Korean. Next, the Korean females were marrying lots of US military men that were stationed in the Korean base. Once they got married, they usually move out of Korea and live in America. So why the recent trend in mainly Korean males marrying female foreigners? Kpop and Kdrama. Who are the main fans/groupies of Kpop and Krama? Females. Foreign females from other countries come to Korea to seek Korean men. Ask every foreign female in Korea what brought them to Korea and you will hear the same two things Kpop and Kdrama.
No, I don’t think Korea needs to become more diverse by bringing in more immigrants, and here’s why: globalization often leads to the erasure of unique ethnic heritage and culture. The push for diversity everywhere is rooted in a Western-centric mindset that assumes every country should conform to Western values and ideologies. The idea that a nation being ethnically homogeneous is somehow wrong or peculiar is a very Western viewpoint that ignores the unique histories and contexts of other countries.
Korea has maintained its cultural identity for thousands of years, resisting countless invasions and external pressures to remain true to itself. Unlike Western colonial powers like the UK, France, and Spain, which diversified through the exploitation and colonization of other nations, Korea’s homogeneity reflects a long history of self-preservation and resilience. We’ve never colonized others or imposed our culture on different lands; we’ve simply fought to protect our own. This is completely different from the U.S., which was founded on colonization and built on immigration, or from Europe, where diversity often resulted from centuries of colonial exploitation.
Western ideologies often push the narrative that a diverse, globalized world is inherently better, but what they fail to acknowledge is that this perspective can lead to the erasure of distinct cultures and identities. The Western model of globalization tends to flatten differences, pushing everyone to adopt the same values, the same standards, and the same ways of life. This doesn't just dilute cultures-it erases the unique ethnic heritage that countries like Korea have worked so hard to protect. It’s about preserving a distinct cultural identity that has thrived for thousands of years without succumbing to external pressures to change.
Yes, Korea faces challenges like labor shortages, and immigrants can be a part of the solution to that. But addressing these issues doesn’t require us to overhaul our entire cultural and social fabric to fit into a Westernized mold of what a country “should” look like. There’s nothing wrong with a nation valuing its own heritage and striving to maintain it. Diversity isn’t the only path to progress, and it shouldn’t be treated as some universal standard that every country must adhere to.
Korea doesn’t need to apologize or conform to a Western expectation of diversity. Our homogeneity isn’t about exclusion-it’s about continuity, heritage, and a deeply rooted cultural identity that’s worth preserving. Globalization, driven by Western ideologies, often threatens that, pushing everyone to fall in line with the same set of beliefs and values. But Korea’s history, culture, and identity have survived precisely because we haven’t conformed. We’ve kept what’s ours intact, and that’s not something that needs fixing. It’s something to be respected and protected.
So many of us westerners feel the same.

Actually I do. There are Asians all over the world do go globalization. There are half Asians all over the world do to globalization. Asia hasn't done it's part. They want to be every where , take over things yet dont want to be globalized as well. It's wrong and it's far time asia does it's part.

Everyone in the video seemed kinda nice and open about immigration but the comments section tells you a different story. You don’t know whether these interviewees were hand selected plus they probably won’t say something racist to his face as he is not Korean himself.

@@irovision I actually just came back from Seoul Korea 🙂 I didn’t experience any racism but I’m always curious to what people actually feel inside. I genuinely hope they don’t hate foreigners as I liked it when I was there.
I think korea should not do like europe, which are losing their security after opening immigration. however, there are good immigrants and they should be respected.
What US and Europe should have done is lower their standards and bring in people who are willing to work and at least have an average standard of living with a HS degree. Mass migration is the worst thing you can do and it's going to hurt any country in the long run. Look at Turkey for example bringing in 20 million Syrians at once but they didn't have much choice anyways lol. Or help other countries by helping them build civilization and invest in them so it's a win win for everyone and the best way to help.
Korea already has a very high bar for citizenship and permanent residency. The problem is people who are highly educated are not willing to immigrate to Korea. They go to the US or Canada instead. Why work at Samsung when you can work at Google?

Yes korea can end up like South Africa where anglo saxons set up discrimatory hierachies against indigenous people, and worked with western powers to consolidate power and wealth, or with a sharp increase in crime as uneducated ppl immigrate. I think if korea is going to allow it their immigration policies need to be strict and free from foreign affairs.
@@aoh4905 Helping other countries by investing is a great idea but of course leaders do not care about ideas that make sense...They care about making $$$ by ruining other nations through war and then displacing those people by causing more issues for other nations who are taking them in(while also profiting from that). This way nobody wins except those at the top...Then you have to worry about future conflict amongst different groups(which we are witnessing in some European nations and also in North America).

Basic consensus is that Koreans are open to immigration based on marriage, marrying a Korean as a foreigner before settling down. That way, we as Korean collective, could at least ensure that kids coming from that marriage are not totally isolated from Korean culture. Cultural fusion is what we want. We don't want any kids to be left unattended or ignored potentially to become outcasts hostile to our culture and society. If an individual immigrant is single and has no plans for marriage, I think it's ok too.
Do point to any data that says Koreans are open to immigration based on marriage. I'd love to see that. There's no such thing as cultural fusion and if there was, USA would have succeed in this instead of becoming one of the most unstable nations on the planet where different groups are basically fighting for their own rights.

Even if foreigners marry Koreans, I don't know if it will have a big impact on the birth rate. I'm French, my husband is Korean and we live in Seoul. I'm confronted to the same situation as Korean women, so the problems regarding birth don't magically disappear. Actually, my situation is even more unstable than some because my contracts are yearly. If I become pregnant, obviously my companies will not renew my contracts. Also, my job prospects are very limited here compared to the locals. There is not much stability and we need two incomes to make it.

I'm korean, and I don't want that cultures get mixed and the ways of thinking get mixed and at the end it gets confused. I don't want the situation of Europe and America here in my nation. That's my honest opinion. Of course the tendency that international marriage increases and more foreigners settle down after working here is inescapable and natural. I don't mind that although I will have my concerns in my head. But politically encouraging immigration in public is what I would oppose.

As a Korean-Canadian I have been married to my Canadian wife of Irish-Scottish descent for 36 years, and we have two children. To claim that it was all smooth sailing would be a total lie. No marriage is like that. And our children living in a small town experienced some racism, but nothing compared to the kind of racism that I experienced in the city when I first came here in the mid 70s. My skin is quite thick bc of that. As they say, what doesn't kill you...
I don't think SK has much of a choice regarding increasing foreign presence not just because of economic reason - including low birth rate - but because the world has opened up. Humanity can't go back to the formerly isolated existence.... unless there's a global catastrophe that kicks our civilization back a millennium.
thats so wrong! just look at the states, canada, france, belgium, sweden, UK, germany. Its all going downhill because of immigration. Homogenous countries work better
would you say your children has lost their korean heritage and culture from being half korean? Which side do they see themselves more? This just interest me because I am studying in college of racial identity and noticed that many mixed children go through an identity crisis when they dont feel like either one of their parents race.
My seven year calls himself Amerucan ,and he is correct I agree. He ask my husband question anout our contry I was born in Dominican Republic and move to the USA at age 8, and cosider myself as Dominican American and this started after I last visit Dominican Republic at age 18 and was treated diffetent there because I live most of my life in the USA anf will only visit on school holiday. My husband is origanly from Peru move to the USA when he was 14 years old is 35 years old n never been back since he move here. My children identify as Canadians, and they have little attachment to their Korean heritage due mainly to my neglect of steeping their formative years in my mother culture. I didn't value language as much when I was raising them, and whilst I ]value it very much now, my lack of interest has robbed them of being bilingual.
In fact, my wife who lived in Japan for a year is gifted in language being fluent in English and French, but also well enough to live in Japan and Korea. She was the one who was teaching them Korean when they were young.

Higher paid work requires greater language fluency. That is why there are more foreigners in low paid jobs.

The most naive people are the ones who don't have any idea what they have to lose. If we aren't reminded and are witnessing why something is bad fairly consistently, we will keep making the same mistakes(hence why conflicts are a constant thing because we don't seem to learn from history).
Korean immigration will never have the same societal issues as European or American immigration. Why? because EU and USA have made enemies in the world so now the countries they bullied are bullying them back. Korean immigrantion is based on mutual respect and exchange of benefits. So it can work well
6:45 he is correct... it's not the choice of a male alone to choose if they want kids. I am not Korean but I hear too many stories from Korean friends (and foreigner friends living in Korea). The economy and their system make women choose to work and give up building a family. If they would prior women's opinion and help them not just with money but other issues like keeping their jobs after giving birth... Everyone seems to focus only on "foreigners in or out"...
Even if Korea opened its doors to foreign immigrants, I don’t think it would help the birth rate go up. If foreigners can’t get jobs to support their families nothing is going to change. With no other support measures for families from the government it would be a downgrade for foreigners to move there and start a family.. in my opinion. ✌🏻 Also, the law ist not with the foreign spouse. If life is good it might be okay, but if something happens the foreign person becomes no support whatsoever… as known, Korea has a high rate of domestic abuse…

Domestic violence in Korea is definitely decreasing as time goes by. It is worth looking forward to a better future.
If they can become real Koreans, it makes sense. It means that if that were possible, most natural-born Korean citizens wouldn't worry about that. However, lots of foreign immigrants such as Chinese and Muslims wanted to make South Korea another China and Islamic nation so far. On top of that, they don't want to follow Korea's national law structure, traditional racial habits, and social vibes like Confucianism. Of course, most educated South Koreans already knew that fact, thus, about 90% of Koreans will try a massive level of protesting against immigrants. This nation, South Korea is a nation-state, a single-race nation, and for over 3000 years, this nation has been a pure Korean country. Why did Muslims and other foreign residents in Korea maintain quiet mood until now? They couldn't make loud voices in Korean society. Most of them already knew they shouldn't touch Koreans' racial sovereignty. If a few politicians and high officials start the policy that accept those foreigners, they would be impeached by raging Korean citizens in the end. Why do England guys keep massive level violence and riots against Muslim people nowadays? Guests or visitors can't become owners of another foreign country. Please don't make Koreans angry. Historically, Koreans have been fighting against foreigners' various invasion regardless of its shapes.

As a non Korean, I hope Korea doesn't accept immigrants because Korea have preserved their culture well. I wish they can still keep it up and dont let any immigrants to destroy the uniqueness. UK and France already showed you how bad it has become. Their culture is being swallowed up by multiculture and crime increased dramatically
There is a connection between immigration failure in UK/EU/US and historical colonialism/ slavery. These regions brought foreigners to their country as slaves or as conquered people. So how could they ever expect friendly immigration in the future? But if Korea brings foreigners in for a mutual exchange of benefits, immigrants will integrate and respect Korean culture. Because Korea never harmed them or their countries in the past.
Bad intentions are here and there anytime, although We don't have such histories of colonialism. Also no one can tell who has fish intentions. I have been watching RUclipsrs intentionally ask people questions framing korean as racists. There are difference between racism in asia and that in western culture. In this world, there are people who cannot tell cultural differences and don't have any intention to put effort to mingle with the local. To prevent the problems from foreigners with such attitudes, strong and strict rule on immigration policies are needed before it is active.

Speaking as a Korean American, while I wish there were a world where borders could be truly open, Japan/Korea should have a controlled flow of immigration. Another Korean here said it best, while East Asia may have had conflict with one another, our homelands haven't colonized the rest of the world the way Western Europe/America has. While I'm open to immigration, it needs to be our way. Western values should not be imposed on ours.

No, No, No. My wife and I have permanent residency status in Korea. Our child was born in Korea. He has a permanent residency visa. That visa was given to him on the condition that he NEVER applies for citizenship. At birth he was denied health insurance. Why. Not racially Korean. Denying health insurance to a new born baby. Staggering. Eventually after 3 months he got health insurance. He can be born in Korea, learn Korean be raised in Korea but...... Hence we are leaving, no thanks.

Yes, Korea will give health insurance to foreigners after six months, but not because they are racially different. This applies to citizens and ethnic Korean non-citizens as well. Health insurance is funded by taxpayer money, mostly by Korean citizens and some foreign residents. This system has been abused by some foreign nationals from China causing a deficit of 64 billion won or nearly 47.9 million usd. This deficit that must be covered by the Korean government through taxpayer money. It is not discriminatory for the government to limit coverage to citizens and foreign residents. There have been too many cases of foreign tourists coming to Korea to abuse the insurance system without paying into it. That is why coverage is limited to citizens and foreigners who have established residency for six months.

Immigration will not give a baby born in Korea a visa when the child is born. The child must first get a passport from onother country and then apply for a visa, get the visa, and then apply for health insurance. That took 3 months. No health insurance for a baby born in Korea for 3 months even though the parents pay for health insurance. We are not tourists. I'm a 20 year resident. The 3 month wait IS DISCRIMINATORY. I I think the connection between immigration and colonialism/ slavery is so important. If you bring foreigners to your country as slaves or as conquered people, they will one day conquer you. That’s why western immigration is struggling. But Korea has good history with many countries. So if you bring immigrants into Korea, they come in friendship and as equals so they integrate well and maintain Korean culture.

This is a great video. But it’s so scary how many people in the comments don’t understand race vs nationality. Particularly it’s the racists. I have doubts about this. I think it's nonsense to want to keep the "race homogeneous" like what do you have against people from the same country being different? on the other hand, have to be careful not to have the same thing happen in europe and canada (invasion of muslims).

I am Korean. There is a shortage in bus driver here in Korea due to the aging population. I remeber watching a foreign bus drivers here in Korea.
Korean bus companies don't give work visas to foreigners, they're not that big, but if you have a Korean work visa and you're a good driver and you have no problem with the language, you should be able to do it. There's a shortage of drivers because the wages are low by Korean standards.

I can see how immigration could make the birth rate worse - by increasing demand on the housing market. Unless there is increased construction to match any immigration, it will make it harder for those Koreans who do want to start a family to do so.
On the other hand, I believe Korea has significantly more young men than young women, and some of those young women are very vocal about wanting nothing to do with men. If it were possible for the government to encourage young women from around the world who are open to starting a family with a Korean to immigrate, this might help. Though I can see such a policy facing all sorts of criticism 😄

Asia is by far the most overpopulated continent, even Korea, Japan is way more population dense than your average western country, factually . Propoganda about ageing population aside, they are factually overpopulated, hence the exorbitantly high property prices. So they don't "need" more foreigners or locals or people of any race to add to these social issues they are currently facing.
Then how come Canada and Australia and which is some of the biggest countries with super low population density have super high property prices. Don't forget New Zealand. Super low population density but still super high property based in price to income ratio. The problem with countries like Japan and South Korea and even Italy is that the birthrate is very low to the point of there are more death than birth. If the trend continues, they will have more ageing population who could no longer contribute to the economy of the the country and the country also have to spend more to take care of those ageing people while gaining a lot less which is economically unsustainable.
Only in the cities with high immigration are the property prices sky high in Australia and Canada. Which further proves my point. There are no jobs even for foreigners in Korea, Korea is so competitive and hard-working unlike those countries you mentioned, there's not enough good jobs even for even locals. That's the difference, Korea's labor market is oversaturated , whereas western countries need more skilled labor. Unlike westerners who have a shortage of skilled labor, korea's problem is their people are over-qualified for the jobs that are available.
