fun fact: Piandao’s character design was modeled after the show’s martial arts consultant Sifu Kisu

As a martial artist, myself, (specifically a 3rd degree black belt inTang Soo Do, a style of Korean karate) i love this episode for so many reasons. Primarily the idea that its Sokka's humility that peaks Piandaos interest. Humility is one of the most important things when learning how to fight. Especially in arts and styles rooted in tradition and spiritualism. Its the thing that lets you look inward, and analyze your strengths and weaknesses, without the desire to show off or the need to look good clouding your own self reflection. And thats how we improve. Pride in ones accomplishments can be powerful. But if its not tempered by humility, it becomes arrogance. And i can say from personal experiences that arrogance is the quickest way to find yourself on the ground, wishing youd been more tactful.
Not to mention the ideas of a warrior not just being a machine that swings a weapon, but who looks to other arts and practices to both allow their skills and lessons to inform your martial prowess, and to allow your skills in martial arts inform your daily life. As well as providing a stronger balance between the destructiveness of fighting and the more constructiveness of honing ones physical and mental fitness.
Just... like I said. As someone whos trained in, and taught one form of martial arts or another, this episode is brilliant, beyond its stellar writing. It really showcases the difference between "learning to fight," and "learning the martial arts," as well as showcasing why they're called martial ARTS in the first place. Its more than just "punch good." And i love every minute of it

If I remember correctly, this guy trained Zuko, too! I guess that's why Zuko said almost the same to that little boy 👍
As for what you said about Sokka being the "leader" of the group: Totally agree! I don't think anyone can disagree, really. One of the best characters this show has 😊

A note on season 3 in general, because you seemed to expect the invasion/comet plot to move along faster. This season has a lot of character and world building, showing how the people of the fire nation are normal people and can be just as noble as anyone else, thus they should be treated just like anyone else. This will play into a major conflict later, but I dont want to spoil on that.

The interesting part about this episode is that it is said in the extras about characters that Master Piandao is a non bender child of two powerful firebenders.
It’s nice that Sokka was taught by someone who undoubtedly shared his insecurities.

One thing about this season, which I, at least, happen to think is pretty cool, is that, even though we are definitely marching towards the grand finale, the season doesn't rush to get there. The writers know that these are the last few episodes where hey can world-build and show character growth, so they carefully allow whatever time they can to do so.
Trust me, there is no pacing problem here, the main story moves along at a smooth, steady clip, while still letting the world breathe, and the characters shine, one by one, or in groups.

One thing I like about this universe compared to others with magic or superpowers is that non-benders aren't completely outmatched. Like you said, sometimes it feels like "three vs three plus Sokka" but look at Mai and Ty Lee: both dangerous non-bender fighters. This episode was important for Sokka and others to show that, yeah you don't have this one skill but there's so much you can learn and train. You even see this parallel with Iroh training too and becoming strong all while others look down on him.

Did you know that master Piandao also taught Zuko?
Also you can see a couple of Lion turtle sculptures around Piandaos house. Those are the same animals Aang discovered in the Library episode.

If im not mistaken, the shopping scene is the creators joking about Nickelodeon asking them to use weapons and armor, probably for toy merchandise

Specifically the Aang part is, yes! Nick was wanting them to create armor for Aang so they could make a toy with it and sell/promote the heck out of it and that was their response 😂

Back in the first book, in one of the episodes with the pirates, Uncle Iroh lost a white lotus bone and forced Zuko to sail to the port for just 1 bone. They then met the pirates and Katara stole a scroll of water magic from the pirates. Zuko was very annoyed by this search for the lotus

And now we have the final piece of why I say Yue is part of Team Avatar. Who do you think sent the meteorite down to Earth. Exactly where Sokka could get it. While he was close to a sword master. Yue would have had the ability to choose the best one.

@@quwykxz Thanks. Other evidence. She has been with them every step of the way. She was with them at the serpent's pass. She rescued Aang Book 3-1 when he tried to go after the Fire Lord by himself. She did The Bending of the water for him. She had to have been the one to tell the gang where to find him. And she will be directly responsible for The Day Of Black Sun
