Greetings my fellow Masters and Princesses! Thank you for all the great comments; what a great community. I guess a lot of us have a similar experience before we discovered BAND-MAID and after listening and becoming a fan in terms of how some of us listen to music now.
I saw The Cure (one of my all time favorite band) last year and I found myself analyzing their music intently like never before. Make long story short, I have a new appreciation for their music, specially the bassist.
I definitely think it’s because of BAND-MAID, Po!

I grew up in the 60's listening the Beatles, Stones, Zepplin, Sabbath (before they were called metal), etc. I've seen many bands and genre come and go, but nobody has excited me like Band-Maid: it's nostalgic, yet new. They've taken the best part of several genre over the past 60 years and combined them into something wonderfully fresh. It's not only what they play but how they play it: what Kanami, MISA and Akane do in the MV is not so much dueling but complimenting one another, to the great benefit and joy of the listener.

I found Band-Maid back in 2014 on Facebook,They changed my life forever. As a musician of 56 plus years and now disabled (can't play keyboards anymore). I feel something emotional every time I see or hear anything of Band-Maid. I feel like their family, because I never had one. I am so proud of Band-Maid and how far they have come. To me they are the most talented women on the planet today. Thanks for the reaction. 🤘🤘

You are not the only one. Band-Maid has changed how I listen to music too. The only other band I can compare them to is Rush, where Geddy, Alex, and Neal all contributed in such a fashion that the music somehow meant more, compositionally, lyrically, and musically. You can't just listen once, you have to listen multiple passes just to hear everything that 's going on. The mix for this video is very well engineered: not only all of the band, but the crowd noises and responses also add to the soundscape. And not only do Akane's fills heighten the bass- guitar battle, but also listen to the synth track that adds atmosphere to that section: it's brilliant - my hat is off to Kanami and whoever else in the band contributed to the backing track.
Band -Maid is one of the few bands that consistently exceeds my expectations. This performance is a keeper.

I know what you're saying. There was music in my house as far back as I can remember - classical, 40's big band, show tunes, etc. The British invasion music of the early 60's is what what really got me into listening seriously. I know exactly where I was when I first heard the Beatles. I liked a lot of other music after them. But that other music did not have the same effect on me, until I discovered Band-Maid. For me, they are the best band I have ever heard, including the Beatles (I never thought I would say that). The musicianship, the compositions, the arrangements, the energy - everything about them. It's just magical !! I can listen to them play the same song over and over again and not be bored. It's amazing.

Yeah, me too. I stopped listening to music in the late 80s, and Band-Maid is the first time I have been excited about rock since. And they opened me up to all this new music...Nemophila, Hanabie, The Warning, even new punk like Otoboke Beaver. And I am still discovering great new rock music, mainly from the East. Rock isn't dead, it just migrated. It's like my favorite rock bands from the 70s and 80s had daughters and they all grew up and did it better. 🤣

Agree even though I am in the music business. Bandmaid has changed the way I look at music structure of songs. The band I work with use the old intro verse chorus verse mid eight chorus verse end structure. We now mix things up adding pre chorus or drops and crowd sections into songs.
Miku for me is the one who has had the biggest progression from not knowing how to play guitar when the band started to now having solos and being a major part of songs rhythm wise. Just think if Saiki never joined would she have learnt the guitar.....Great reaction btw

Ok you’ve got my attention. A couple months ago I decided to listen to the classic rock station because I had been so immersed in Band Maid. I found that the bands I used to think were great sounded simple. The drums, bass and guitar seemed slow and simple. As a guitarist, I realized Band Maid had changed the way I listened to music. I love Band Maid.

This is so true very few bands of the past, to which I used to listen, stand up to a comparison with Band Maid. The bass and drums especially seem so simple and almost lazy in comparison. There are a few notable exceptions obviously, but for me nothing for years and years gets anywhere close to our maids.

I'm 58. When I was young I swore I would never get stuck in that music rut like so many older folks do and only listen to the music from the 70's and 80's that I fell first in love with. Well that's exactly what happened to me. I didn't even like listening to music much anymore. Then one day in early January last year I finally decided to look for some new music. If you had recommended an all female Japanese group to me I would have said emphatically "NO THANKS".
But I saw a thumbnail of these 2 adorable Japanese girls with guitars in maid outfits. It was intriguing so I clicked. I instantly fell in love. 4 months later I was on a plane to go see them live. There is so much amazing new music they opened my eyes to. Hanabie, Nemophila, Maximum The Hormone, Gacharic Spin, Band-Maid renewed my love for music.

I grew up with the Beatles, Cream etc., but I listened to everything all along the way, and it felt like things got pretty flat. Then the European symphonic bands and the Japanese bands hit me across the face and made me realize it wasn't me, it was the music that had gone flat. And Band-Maid are, for me, the best all around rock band since the Beatles.

Al, no need to apologize about the emotions. Band-Maid just draws them out of themselves and us, their fans (Masters and princesses, po). The clip that Orenje’s on Band-Maid’s 10 Anniversary Tour and Saiki tearing up towards the end drew out a tear or two from me. Band-Maid exhibits that trait that all great musicians have - they cause you to feel the emotion of the song, even if - like in Band-Maid’s case, we don’t understand the language. What a remarkable group of musicians.

I was caught off guard, ha ha ha! It wasn't the first time that B-M has made me cry during a reaction or just listening on my own. But, it's usually the slower more emotional song like Awkward, Anemone, Daydreaming, etc... especially once Mincho hits me with that sweet guitar solo. It does happen though randomly, like in this case.

    Thanks for the video.
I've been on the same musical journey as you.
And when you hear "FROM NOW ON",
For some reason, tears came out, and the music I had listened to faded.
I also remember that some things stood out.
In Japan, there is such a word.
"When you look at a flower and feel that it is beautiful, it is not that the flower is beautiful.
There is a human heart that finds the flower beautiful."
    BANDMAID's music is fantastic.
And I am touched by your heart that finds it wonderful.
Because listeners like you are part of their music.
This is because we will leave music for future generations.
When they reach the peak of their careers, we get even older.
Let's take care of our health as we walk.
    May you be happy today.

I'm older than you and my jam was (and still is) Progressive Rock from late sixties through the seventies although for many reasons I stopped listening to it. I got generally disenchanted with Rock from the 80's on, no band really enthused me apart from occassional songs. What Band Maid did for me was to make me revisit the music I loved from my youth and reminded me how damn good it was and still is.

Band-Maid had a similar effect on me, and it was the compositional and instrumental craftsmanship that did it. Like you say, it might be simple details, but they're all over the place and always effective. Multiply that times five and you have complete song orchestration that just doesn't exist much in the rock world. Combine all that with the fact that they cross so many stylistic lines and you have a band that is never boring.

  • @tonygriffin_

I spent the 70's and 80's seeing lots and lots of live shows from some of the great Rock bands - Zeppelin, Queen, The Who, Zappa, Floyd, Santana and others and great Metal bands (when the only genre was Heavy Metal!) like Sabbath and Iron Maiden. Then I got tired of it and spent the 90's getting into live EDM like Underworld, The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers. It wasn't until 2016 that I discovered Babymetal and found a new love and appreciation of Metal. And then I found Band-Maid shortly afterwards and suddenly knew that the Rock torch had not blown out but was being kept burning brightly in Japan. From those 2 bands, I found that treasure chest of female and female-led Japanese Rock and Metal bands that are making all the best music for the 21st century - Lovebites, Nemophila, Asterism, Hanabie, Otoboke Beaver (for when I need a reminder of how joyous Punk was back in the late 70's) and more appearing all the time. Apart from The Warning, I haven't looked west for several years.

I stopped listening to new music in the late 90's and early 2000's, just got out of my interest zone. Then I found Band-Maid and they opened my mind to new music again! I sure listen deeper to my older favorites now, and have found a lot I missed. I'm thankful to Band-Maid for opening my mind, again, to new music. Now I look for new music again and have found several bands I love like The Warning, Rolling Quartz, Liliac and many more!
Saiki has really opened up and is a larger stage presence that ever, really like it! I love how the band used the many levels of the stage in this performance! Akane accents Mincho and MISA so well, not overpowering, just helping direct the focus on the exceptional skills being displayed! Love the new "Battle Armor", looks great! Band-Maid is still top of the hill for me!

With Band-Maid, they hit you with so many all at once, it takes about 100 more listens to find out what's in the recipe. And even then, you find a hint of something you missed earlier. Saiki had bad throat problems a few years after the band formation, and had to have throat surgery, sha has said it took a long time to bounce back. I think Miku has improved the most because she couldn’t play guitar when she formed the band. She was going to be the singer but decided it would be cool to have 2 women singers in the band, so she decided to learn guitar. She hated it at first, but are all glad she hung in there. Saiki has been learning guitar and piano lately, so we may see something from that soon??

They always have something different to offer in every song. They never repeat themselves . They've all improved a great deal but I think Miku has upped her game even more because she started from ground zero on guitar and look at her now. I have a feeling we may be getting a surprise or two from her in the future.

Great comment at the start; I also mostly listened old stuff for rock music, but where I differ from you is...I was always bored with it! Well not always, but for a loooong time. Every once in a while a band would come out with a song that got my pulse racing and I'd wonder, "Why does no one do this all the time?" So I went to progressive music and that's cool but it's obviously a very different listening experience.
Then a reactor that I watched who did progressive music reactions did Band-Maid for some reason. I heard "Dice" and you know that Akane-Misa intro. I instantly loved it! But I'd been let down by so many songs that had 5 seconds of cool stuff then went standard. So I kept waiting for the song to become "normal" but, outside of the chorus, it never did. It was constantly exciting. It was, literally, the music I'd been waiting my whole life for.
By the end I had tears in my eyes. So yeah, I relate 100%.

You are dead right. Band-Maid improves your appreciation, awareness and composition of music. Finding Band-Maid on the internet encouraged me to search for other new bands. Since then I have a completely new collection a fave bands in the UK such as EBB, Witch Fever, Square Wild, Nova Twins and very recently Optica (Jazz), spanning all genres.

When I was going to leave my comment I decided to read through the other comments and seen statements that mirrored mine over and over, but I will leave mine too lol... I am a 58 y/o male, cut my teeth in the seventies/eighties with bands like Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet ,Rush, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, even Santana (which actually has been a big influence on Kanami), there are actually connections between the birth of rock in Japan and Led Zeppelin that may have led to Su Metal's career.... Anyway I got a bit side tracked, been a Band Maid fan for about 4 years now, I think lol, for all the same reasons, seems like yesterday...

I hear three different vocals in there simultaneously at one point.
One is Saiki, others are both Miku, but low backing vocal must be on backing track because high harmony sounds loud and low is hard to hear.

Pretty sure that Miku lowers her voice electronically by a couple of octaves for this track. I've heard it many times when this is played live.

Kanami's intro to the battle is so subtle. Or "battle"? It is more like a conversation, as you said.

Very nice reaction ! The thing I liked the most about this was the difference in the duel between Kanami and Misa. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the original live video from Zepp Tokyo and I've heard them play it live 3 times, but Kanami just was off the charts with the subtle.........and not so subtle changes from her original solo. I had to go back and forth about 5 times, and she used so many different styles within the solo. I heard some Deep Purple, maybe some Rush, a little Gary Rossington from Lynyrd Skynyrd and even a little surf rock lick. She also looks amazing, as does Sai-Chan, Miku, Akane and Misa in their new look maid outfits.
As you said Sai-Chan has built herself up so wonderfully that she can match or surpass any other frontwoman on the planet. And what can you say about Akane that hasn't already been said ? I call her the High Priestess of the Temple of The Perfect Fill, because that's exactly what her fills are........perfect. I spent one live show just tracking a videoing her fills and it was like magic.
I'm 77 and have been a hard core rocker since I saw The Young Rascals and Blood, Sweat and Tears in NYC in 1967 and The Doors at the Whiskey Au Go Go in LA in 1968. And just like @dazed andconfused318, I got very disenchanted with the state of rock after the early 80's. I really enjoyed prog rock but I loved all of it. All I ever listened to was all my old playlists with the occasional group that I enjoyed. I first got interested in Japanese music after I saw Kill Bill and the Japanese female group The 5, 6, 7, 8's in the movie and I was very intrigued. Then came Show-Ya and a couple of other groups, but then my interest faded until about 6 years ago when someone posted the MV for Wagakki Band's "Kishikaisei" on Facebook and I was enthralled. From there it went to Baby Metal, Aldious, SCANDAL, Stereopony, Doll$Box and finally Band Maid. Another Japanese rock group you should check out is Glim Spanky, they are doing classic 60's blues rock with a psychadelic touch to it. You should react to their song "Circle of Time" from their 2020 RUclips Live Concert, it's a real banger. Their vocalist, Remi Matsuo has a voice like a mixture of Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and Susanna Hoffs, and guitarist Hiroki Kamemoto plays like a young Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton. Great stuff.

Ha Ha...I (59} can feel you...I listen to a lot of j-rock/metal. Japanese bands like to mix other genres into it. Every time I think, hey, let's hear something Western, I feel the same as you. No matter if it's older stuff or newer stuff...none of it can really impress me.

If you've never shed a tear while listening to Bandmaid, you'd better check your pulse, cause you may not be alive. In my world there are 2 types of contemporary rock music 1) Bandmaid & 2) not Bandmaid. I prefer #1.

Not sure if I agree with you about Saiki growing the most. Take Miku, who couldn't play a note on the guitar when they started to being a competent rhythm guitarist with her own side band; or Akane, who started out playing on a small kit to being one of the best drummers on the planet. Maybe...
