NEW AQUEON SUBSTRATE COMPARISON(GOOD OR BAD?)

- In this video, I test out the brand new Aqueon substrate and compare it to ADA Amazonia, Fluval Stratum and ADA Amazonia Light. The results from my experiment are surprising!
This would be useful if you had tested the plain water.
Best substrate comparison on RUclips I've found. I really appreciate it. Would be cool to see long term comparison. Also, did they appear to differ with how light they were (do they hold plants down effectively in current)?
Would be nice to have a summary of results below. But great vid. So was Amazonia best?
My ph is 6.8, will the fluval substrate reduce it further? I have guppys and tetras. Your tank looks amazing.
Unfortunately yes, it lowers your PH significantly
@@BIGSNAKEINC123 so no matter what your PH is it will lower it by the same amount?
@@HighPriestVaticanAssasin Yes, based on my experiences.
What’s is your tap water or RO PH?
What shrimp likes pH above 8?
The Aqueon looks like a calcined clay fired to have a glassy rind. I doubt it would be much good for anything except filling space in the tank or the shelf at Petco. Might not be bad as a filter media though…
Great video, it would also have been helpful to know the TDS and pH of your tap water, nonetheless we can still see the difference between all of the substrates. Helpful vid!
Thank you very much, for this great comparison I am going for Fluval Stratum
Glad I could help!
thanks for the helpful vid. did you ever test the water you poured in for baseline stats?
Amazing review has got my mind going away from cheaper stuff and into the ADA! Curious for a 29 gallon tank how much substrate do I need?
Also I’m planning on running without co2
I would recommend 1lb per gallon of water.
Awesome review! I was having a harder time finding ada where it was available immediately. Fluval was delivered to my door in 24/36 hrs from amazon. The ADA was going to take 2-3 weeks from amazon!
But appreciate your review big time!
Great attempt but the results are unclear at best. Next time there should be a proper "control" (list the initial water parameters you have) and secondly the amount of aqua soil should of been weighed to equal amounts to accurately record the shift in water parameters. Nice overview though I would only Half trust the given results for said reasons.
Yep nothing scientific about this, single sample also
I ordered the Aqueon to try and keep caradinas 😀
given the lack of controls this is essentially 10 minutes of worthless information and I am no better off or educated. thank you for trying.
a control along with actually using a measuring cup/ scale to make sure all were the same ratio starting out.
You should do one on Exo-Terra sub stratum
next time measure the soil in a cup to be consistent between test subjects but good video
those inerts lol it doesnt matter really
Nice video thanks. For measuring ammonia though I would measure the same amount of stratum from each type.
So I’m getting into the Hobby and from this video did the fluval stratum do the best from the results of the tests and based of the price and would you recommend that over the ada Amazonia for a beginner and even more experienced Hobbyists??
Please respond and thanks for the informational video
ADA amazonia is probably your best bet. You won't get the same results, in the long run, while using any other substrate named in this video.
is it ok to use different substrates together like fluval on bottom and ada on top?
excellent comparison. It helped me compare one substrate with another, and I have fluval stratum, and I am glad I have it, cause I would choose it again.
If I may add, I was hoping to see your water parameters right out of the tap. This way I would know how much each substrate CHANGE the water that you add to the aquarium. Not everyone has the same water.
Keep it up. Five stars for the comparison my friend.
Thank you so much, video duration is perfect also it's very informative
Thanks man. Leaning towards Fluval
Very helpful comparison... Thanks👍
What do you recommend to do with a 20g long with fluval mostly fluval stratum if I want to change to Ada Amazonia? I have fish in there but I am worried about the parameter differences
Yeah you'll definitely see a slight increase in Ammonia/nitrates due to the fresh bag of Amazonia. But if youre tank is already cycled I would just slowly add a little bit here and there.
Ive topped off a few tanks with ADA in the past with no isssues
I used the Aqueon substrate because it came with my shrimp tanks. I'm a lazy aquarist, not the sort to test my water parameters. I let my tanks cycle for a month before adding livestock. I was never able to get my shrimps to breed, and had a lot of shrimp deaths. I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong, or maybe crystal shrimps were too sensitive. A week ago, I re-scaped 2 tanks and decided to use Fluval Stratum instead. My last pair of crystals were transferred over, and they disappeared for a couple of days (I'd thought I finally killed them off) Lo and behold, the couple reappeared and the female was berried! I'm definitely a fan of Fluval Stratum now!
Do your research before buying shrimp. You need a different buffering substrate for crystals.
ADA with 8ppm Amonia is shocking to me. My tank would melt without 90% water changes daily lol
Excellent presentation with demonstration of different substrate and reading before and after
Great video. Im.setting up.a new discus tank with amazonia 2
Hello. One of the most complete and informative videos on substrates out there! I am changing the size of my aquarium and for the new set up i will be using Fluval Strarum. My question is whether i can tap the stratum with a gravel. Other doubt i have is will i have to cycle it, providing that i will put my canister filter from my old aquarium directly? I will use 2 kg of Stratum on a 80x35x40 aquarium. Any advise will be appreciated because I don't find that precise information in the internet. Thanks!
The cycling process will be significantly reduced if you are using a active filter from another tank(2weeks maybe)...if the filter was off/dry more than a day or two..the cycling have to start again from scratch.
Soooo how do you deal with the ammonia
Thanks for this informative video 👍😊
T D S ...help ?
thank you very much for this comparison. I really appreciate ;)
Hey man, thanks for the awesome comparison. I was thinking of using Aqueon to add to the caridina tank that currently has fluval stratum. It was getting kinda thin in some spots. I didn't know it would raise the PH like that.
Hey! Ik nothing about fish tanks but want to get into them more. From those stats which is the best? Or which should I purchase?
Would have been good if you did a control so we could see how much they affected your normal readings
Great information, I have rams and guppies, is it possible for guppies to survive with low ph? Currently at 6.8
But i cant seem to find i fo about amazonia 2
as others asked already, what was the initial tds of the water u put in those containers?300?400?
Really appreciate you posting this video 🙂
I am making an iwaguami scape which soil do u prefer ??
very helpful. thank youu
I’m setting up a ramshorn snail tank so they need higher ph for their shells but I’m also doing live plants, would you recommend doing aqueous because it would keep a constant ph?
The Aqueon su straight is a clay bass that is baked. That's why it shatters when you smash it. Its dyed to look dark brown. It is basically gravel...
Yeah it isnt that great. Figured I'd review it and give an honest opinion on the substrate. I wouldn't recommend Aqueon to anyone, its pretty horrible
@@BIGSNAKEINC123 I'm convinced that Fluval Stratum and ADA come from the same manufacturer. If you put them side by side their identical, but I can get 3 bags of stratum for the price of 2 bags of ADA and end up with 20% more product...
@@tomwaits4205 they are very similar but over the years of using both products I can say for certain that ADA is a superior product. Surprisingly enough, i can't keep my Neocaradinas alive in stratum but they are thriving in my co2 injected ada amazonia tank.
@@BIGSNAKEINC123 agree. Used it as it came with my shrimp tank. Total nightmare! Plants could never root properly and those that did died and turned into literal goo root upwards. Had to cleanout and start tank over.
Im gonna get some of that Aqueon substrate to use in a Neo tank... I like the looks of it and its inert... Might be a good capping substrate too...
Awesome video 💪
Super comparison video
Can you put gravel on top ...
Lol your redit name
I winder if there is a way to increase the PH for those who use fluval stratum?🤔
Use a ph increaser not expensive at all and it works awesome
Does the aqueon clay pellets sink? And do they stay the circle shape?
I have them in a 20 gallon high and they've stayed circular, its been almost a year.
@@cwong408 does it change the PH?
@@BreezyBrickyard people says it raises it
Very good video
Enjoyed your vid. I subbed.
Thank you!
Best info...
Excellent video. 👍
Awesome test
This video deserves at least a million view.
Awesome video
Thanks for your feedback (:
Wow you have some really big fish in your tank. I have some Cory catfish and they don’t seem to be growing but I think it’s because they are in a 10 gallon. Now I know to get them a bigger tank, your loaches also seem to be big and active. Mine I haven’t seen since I put him in there and I honestly don’t know if he’s alive or not. I’ll definitely have to find him when I get a bigger tank and set him up in that. Also, you should do a Ultum Nature ControSoil review. Not many people are doing that and I’d like to know the PH/nutritional facts for my plant and such. So far mine are thriving with gravel and they use the fish waste but I want substrate that breaks down fish waste almost like the Eco-Complete I use in my second 10 gallon but better because the Eco-Complete holds no nutrients
Yes, I was going to grab a bag of UNS susbstrate but my closest fish store that carries it is 1 hour away :(
I have a lot of random fish in my tank but they all seem to get along fine, I will soon be building a pond and keeping my Dojo Loaches in there.
