Thank you @henrymmaduabuchi4720 From Wikipedia and which corresponds to my knowledge as someone who knows the history of the church in Onitsha: "The history of the Diocese on the Niger dates back to the Niger expeditions of 1830-1857. After the 1841 expedition, the white missionaries realized that Africa was best evangelized by Africans. This realization led to Samuel Ajayi Crowther being given a prominent role in the mission team to West Africa especially, the Igbo mission. The mission train under the leadership Dr. William Baikie arrived Onitsha on Sunday, 26 July 1857. On 27 July 1857 the king of Onitsha, Obi Akazua and his elders-in-council gave the party a warm official welcome. Hence, 27 July came to be regarded as the beginning of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) mission in Igbo land." "J.C Taylor of Igbo origin played a vital role in the early mission activities in Igbo land. Rev J.C Taylor laid the foundation of the first Church in Igbo land in 1867, which was dedicated on 16 November 1870." "Samuel Crowther was ordained for the Niger mission on Trinity Sunday in 1844, and consecrated as the first ever black Anglican bishop on the Feast of St Peter, 29 June 1864, by Charles Longley, the Archbishop of Canterbury, at Canterbury Cathedral. By this consecration, he became the bishop of the Diocese of Equatorial West Africa, with its headquarters in Onitsha. The Diocese of Equatorial West Africa is the forerunner of the Diocese on the Niger."
Bro, it seems that you are not good in calculation. My mother was born in 1934, and today she is 90 years. Tell me how someone that died a year be4 my mother was born, died over 100 years ago. ITI BOLIBO
Onyeama was the Okwuluora of Igbo Land, Agadagbachiri Uzo of Wawa Land, Agu Gburugburu, Dike Nataogu etc. Chief Onyeama was the father of first Black World Court judge Justice Dadi Onyeama.
He was a warrant chief instituted by the British just like other warrant chiefs in other parts of Igboland. So he was one among many of his kind. Now, he was in charge of the Agbaja area which covers Udi, Awgwu, Oji river and its environs. Most of those warrant chiefs were high handed in discharging their duties which culminated in the Eastern women revolting against them and the imposition of tax in 1929. Many warrant chiefs were attacked by our great grandmothers. Many of those warrant chiefs ended up taken the traditional stool of their immediate communities ALL of which never had kings back in the days. Another powerful warrant chief was Chief Iboko in the Izzi, Ebonyi area. He has a similar story like Chief Onyeama. As for church coming into Igboland, many areas hand churches before Udi. Onitsha, Asaba, Egbu(Owerri) are older than this one in Eke(Udi). Igboland has history books but most of our people don't read history so they make this kind of mistakes both the interviewer and the host made. You check the list of oldest churches in Igboland. Pls, don't make such spurious claims again to post online. Igbo land and history is very easy to find online.
Pls is the guy saying that catholic was the oldest in Igbo land pls I want to know because that guy is lying the oldest church is at Onitsha in 1857 which is christ Anglican church don't mind that guy
Otuocha was the first place white men came in igbo but people didn't welcome them because they don't want to practice western culture and they left there and came to onitsha where they were welcome that is the reason the first missionary school in igbo land is at onitsha
What development? Slave trade?. Before they came, we lived in peace, forbade killing. When they came Aro people began to raid and sell our people so what development are you talking about?. Secondly, there is no greatness in a warrant chief. A warrant chief was a messenger of the coloniser. They were used to destroy our traditional leadership structure. Please know what to celebrate.
This is an incomplete story. Chief Onyeama was also known for cruelty as he was known to have buried some of wives alive when offended by them. Yes he was a great man but he also had a dark side.
It actually won’t surprise me if it happened. A lot of things happened in those DARK OLDEN DAYS WHICH WERE CONSIDERED CULTURAL AND TRADITIONAL. Those practices were quite normal then. I still remembered how we were taught in elementary schools about TWINS BEING KILLED AND SACRIFICED BY OUR ANCESTORS BECAUSE THEY WERE SEEN AS EVIL. Even my own grandparents used to tell us stories many years ago about how DEAD kings and wealthy people would be buried along with some of their LIVING WIVES AND SLAVE to continue serving them in the “next world “. I believed those stories to be true, but I doubt if such still happens anywhere today.
Interesting documentary! But the ignorance of the interviewer is rather disappointing. A little research, even on Wikipedia, would have enabled him add a corrigendum to the repeated claims about the 1st church in Igboland or Southeast.
I pass here every time. All his houses are maintained till today. I like how they keep it. I'm from Ezeagu
African Catholicism.
Father Lutz arrived at Onitsha in 1885.
The Anglican came first in 1857, Dr. William Baikie and assisted by Ajayi Crawther.
I just saw it too, the guy knows nothing 😆😆😆
I have heard about the name but I don't know that he was this big, thank you creative Lord tv for this amazing work

The Church Missionary Society came to Onitsha and the first church there was Christ Church in Onitsha, built in 1857.
Guyman, ihe Anyi n’eme bu ihe mmuo… I observed what you did at the entrance of the late Chief Onyeama palace. Traditionally, ok. Ya gazie!

@@gbolahanfadeyi2886 that didn’t happen in Igbo culture. It was a story told by the early missionaries against our traditions. A one sided story.
