Circa 1974, all the Yes guys, except Rick, were vegetarians. A couple years before he passed away, Squire did an interview where this topic was brought up, and he said Steve was the only who was still a vegetarian and "That's why he looks like a fucking twig!". I've also heard it suggested that maybe one of the reasons Steve is always in such a foul mood is because he can't good vegetarian food on the road.
By all accounts the reason he's always in such a foul mood is that he's an arrogant prick. There's nothing sadder than an old arrogant rock star who is no longer a rock star... * I say this as a huge fan of the band *
I totally agree, yes are excellent and successful but they can never in the same bracket as zeppelin, floyd or U2 and that must grate on people especially if they are technically better than the aforementioned.
Honestly, I think Steve is just an extreme introvert, and unless he has a guitar in his hands he doesn't really know how to relate to other people. That of course doesn't excuse him being rude to others, but it might explain it a bit more clearly. If you met him and he was short with you, though, I wouldn't take it personally.
He's nasty with the other members too. But keep in mind the image we see of Yes is totally different than the real Yes. They used to constantly bicker and hold grudges for wrong notes played 6 months ago. I think part of the reason Bruford quit was he was tired of arguing in the studio.
Casey Van Bruford quit for a few reasons. He was tired of the bright, poppy sound of Yes. He was tired of Chris Squire always running late and keeping others waiting. Really viewed it as the ultimate showing of disrespect to a fellow musician. He was tired of how boring Close to the Edge was in the recording phase for him personally, and he did hate the arguing that went on over just a half a step. Lastly, a band that he had been wanting to join now wanted him in. We all know what band that was. For me though, the music he recorded with Crimson from 72-74 wasn't superior to what he'd done with Yes up to that point.
Jack Minor I like some of the things he did with KC. they were technically on a higher level. For a guy that likes improvised music his studio work really sounded impeccable with Yes, so that was on the whole better than most of KC's stuff which I liked for a while, but now I think much of it is nonsense.
I met him with ASIA back in 2007 in New Jersey. He was extremely short with me and I was a crushed young teenager having asking him to sign the pickgaurd on my guitar he simply replied "No, I can't."
I've heard that he and some of the other Yes guys don't sign things (namely album covers) because they think the fans are going to simply turn around and stick them on eBay.
@@monicadonnelly4991Trevor Rabin was one of the Yes guitarists during their 80s pop era, tho i'm not familiar with that particular era of the band, i think he joined for the "90125" album, wich essentially marked their very first fully pop-oriented discograpy. But when he says "clap" morons in the audience start clapping, so he says "Don't clap on this song, clap on the next one." again with not a trace of a nice English accent just plainly.

He was being a jerk, I was there in the room when that took place and it was very embrassing. The other guys in the band also felt Steve went overboard.

Kinda funny to watch. Steve is back in Yes for the first time since 1981 and he makes it known that he runs the fucking show. he must have had a really bad day, we've all been there.... I think.
I understand how he feels. In the early 90's I was playing a gig in Buffalo, NY and the house engineer named Kenny had me way down in the mix. While on stage, I asked him, nicely, if he could turn me up just a bit. The idiot proceeded to turn me up to 11 so that I was way louder than everyone else. Let me tell you, during our break I just screamed at the guy. My bandmates were horrified - "we have to work with this guy again." Yes, I could've handled it better, but Jesus. I HATE soundmen.
Tech guys at a stage can be real prick sometimes, but it's also true that they play an essential role in the making of any gig, and still they hardly get any recognition, and just like any other tech or musicians they get easly burned out and struggle to keep their patience because of the long hours they work all troughout the day. I'm not justifying their ipotetical rude behaviour, i'm just saying that the fact that they do that sometimes might just be the result of constant exploitation, from both musicians and techs themselves, that's all.
I was there all 3 shows, including band rehearsal and soundchecks after the stage was built and wired for the band. There were incidents even on the first show (Monday night) when Howe was pissed at the lighting. Those tree were awfully close to him. I can understand his anger, but not threats at the fellow running the lights. And this video was 2 days (2 shows) after the Monday night and it still didn't get right. It doesn't excuse Howe's threats though.
If the promoter of a professional band has booked the venue stipulating that certain professional members of house crew (for whose services they will be paying) be available then it's no excuse suggesting that it was a kid from the local college. the fault lies squarely with the venue's stage or technical manager who should have dealt with an ongoing problem long before it reached boiling point. There's too much cost-cutting in the theatre business these days. Well said, Steve.
Agreed. Imo, Howe's attitude here is inconsequential, generally speaking this is what soundchecks are for.. clearly there was an ongoing issue for him to speak up that way and even if there weren't i can understand his frustration, it's a simple problem with an equally simple solution, but bottom line is, attitude or not - this IS the time n place for just that.. better he be polite and not get the point across and have to deal with this during their performance..? I think not.. also it's kinda weird - don't many bands, especially ones of long running iconic status tour with their own sound engineer/lighting/rigging people.. Maybe not all but isn't that a thing? I find it hard to believe that whatever town they pull into on any given night for the gig -their whole show's sound/ light show/etc is dependent on whomever the local venue has as their regular open mic guy
To qualify, I don't hate ALL soundmen, just most I've worked with. IMO, they are musician wannabees and almost all of the ones I've worked with have been quite arrogant. Techno geeks that think they have musical taste. Freddy Betchen here in Buffalo is one of the exceptions - great guy, great ear. Bruford said that Howe was a bit irritable or nervous at times even back in the day. What can you do, he's only human. He's still my favorite guitarist of all -time.
There's another clip I've seen from, I think from the same day, where Steve is playing a bit of To Be Over, and he abruptly stops and yells at the lighting guy. I think it must have been earlier in the day, because he only sounds just mildly annoyed in that bit, he doesn't sound quite so pissed.
Physically he wouldn't stand a chance against the average crew member, so it's just abuse of power. Which isn't uncommon at all on this level, although there are exceptions to the rule. I just listened to an interview with Brian May who not only mentioned Rory Gallagher as a main influence on his guitar playing, but also for not being an ass to his fans and people who worked for him.
guys stop hating on Steve! he really isn't a bad person, as some people said on here, everyone has their days! all fucking guitarists do, sheesh calm your tits guys, Steve is an amazing man
He's always struck me as acting reserved but otherwise always seething over perceived lack of recognition of his imperious greatness...what an emaciated, buffoonish jackwagon.
During my last Yes show, Mr. Howe threat and insult a guy with an Ipad ... I was there and felt embarrassment for the guy and his wife... During the last 30 years I had the opportunity to meet almost all the band members and all of them always were very kind... Jon and Chris especially...
Howe is a funny, funny man. I once shook his hand and he was all cranky like," watch the hands mate!". A brilliant and talented musician, yes, but I certainly would not enjoy his company on the road. 'Effen wet blanket, man.
+leomannpictures when I met Steve He said, to one of the others waiting in line to meet him " I don't do the hand-shaking thing" He was obviously concerned about people gripping his hands too tightly and since they are his lively hood, It is understandable that he means to take care of those hands.!
Carl Palmer is the same way--he doesn't shake hands because he's had problems with them in the past (including surgery for carpal tunnel) and needs to protect them. That being said, he'll gladly do fist bumps! I've met him twice and he's very sweet :3
These were big shows for Yes, and I am sure tensions were high. Obviously Steve is also a bit of a perfectionist. I don't think he'd really kick someone in the head. His pants are too tight 😎
You can be a perfectionist and still be nice towards others, chris is the best example of that. Oh, and you can totally kick someone with tight pants on, i guess steve wouldn't have the ability to kick someone specifically in the head, cuz that requires too much precision and flexibility, wich is something that i don't expect from an old skinny prick like steve, who crumples up whenever he plays. He's literally all bark and no bite.
Losing temper? To put it succinctly, this is a clear and repeated threat of workplace violence made by a superior to a specific employee, witnessed by other superiors, employees and visitors. Imagine still having a position after that. This is more than merely _losing temper._ In other contexts, he might be disciplined, unemployed, facing legal action, etc.
All of these guys knew that the techs were from CalPoly SLO (College). There's no reason to threaten the young student in anger with bodily harm. But then, the student probably could've held his own against Steve if he had to.
Steve “Skeletor” Howe probably weighs 140 lbs soaking wet. I hear he has refused to shake people’s hands for decades because he’s so frail. This is a classic “Old man yells at clouds” rant. 😂
All Steve had to do was get together with the light man and discuss the problem and I'm sure things would have been fine...instead Howe just acts like a complete asshole.
Everyone is jumping on Steve Howe’s case but how do we know that this is something he has talked to the guy about before a lot and they just don’t seem to get the shit that would piss me off to. Hey they’re paying their salaries they should get it right.
As I read through the comment it's shocking to see the lack of professional work ethics that is present in the world today . If one part of a team is inadequate it impairs the capability of rest of the group to function efficiently . Would you want the crew of a jet to kick back smoking weed and guzzling Jack Daniel's, or do you want them to fly the fricking plane ?
Yeah, but to borrow your analogy, it would be like the airline hired a bunch of inexperienced college students and then yelled at them for not being as good as seasoned professionals. The lighting and stage hands were inexperienced students from a local college. You get what you pay for.
Haha, a vegetarian friend once said to me "give up meat man, meat makes people really angry"... love and peace Steve Howe, you have played some beautiful guitar but your attitude to others is YOUR DISGRACE!
It's kinda sad really. I'm an old fan of theirs, and especially that of Steve Howe. As a guitarist myself having to perform live in front of a bunch of people, it can be frustrating if you don't have competent support folks; especially on sound & lights. Yet, you deal with it... CIVILLY. Steve came off as a tantrum-throwing prima donna, which I am willing to grace on account of his age, and his vegetarianism. lol! ;-) He needs to go and eat some red meat!
You can see Howe somewhere else gesturing at a lighting or sound guy in a really angry fashion in the middle of a number at a gig. Maybe to turn his sound up. Possibly he's mellowed a bit by now. He sounded more mellow on an interview recently. I wonder why the recently scheduled 2023 Yes gigs have been postponed. ... ?
Steve Howe may be a great talent but he's an absolute prick of a human being. The fact that he simply replaced Alan White after he died a few weeks before the 2022 tour speaks volumes. Yet when his son died it was a different matter, all shows called off. This current lineup is all about one man's ego and it absolutely sucks. But I get the feeling Howe is loving the complete control of the band now that the other long-term members are either dead or no longer involved.
Another example of the "CLASSLESS" attitude that has become the by-word for Howe/Squire/White..I mean just look at the way they treated Benoit David. I bet that young guy on the spotlight could kick Howe's butt and then show him the meaning of 'Professional'. What a Prima Donna.
Hey Steve, Jose Feliciano would like a word about playing in the dark... After that Jeff Healey has a few things he'd like to say. And in case you have any more questions I'm pretty sure Stevie Wonder can help you out.
Somebody in the crowd says "Oh man" 😃 I've been to a couple of gigs he did for a Pam Bay of the Steve Howe Appreciation Society at the Fitzwilliam Centre in Beaconsfield, he seemed fairly chilled then but he can clearly be an arsehole at times! 😃
When did this happen? In the 1970s, Jon Anderson left Yes, and Drama happened with Steve Howe. Since this period, every album after this had Howe playing on it till the most recent incarnation, where Howe is the only guy left standing, out of these people on stage. Jon Anderson was let go, Wakeman left and Alan and Chris died. Howe now runs Yes.
@@mejsmith1 Jon was injured and had to take time off. He's been better for a while now but he was forced out of the band so they could continue touring. Because "Yes" can't afford to not tour.
@@mejsmith1 But I guess you're right, they didn't exactly fire Steve, they just replaced most of his guitar tracks with someone who played better, on "Union." Then he left. I think I originally meant to write "then Steve kicked Jon out of the band." When accurately it would have been Chris, Alan and Steve. Based on what I've gathered I'm pretty sure Steve is the guy that put his foot down.

Steve Howe has never had a happy day in his life.
Physically he wouldn't stand a chance against the average crew member, so it's just abuse of power. Which isn't uncommon at all on this level, although there are exceptions to the rule. I just listened to an interview with Brian May who not only mentioned Rory Gallagher as a main influence on his guitar playing, but also for not being an ass to his fans and people who worked for him.
guys stop hating on Steve! he really isn't a bad person, as some people said on here, everyone has their days! all fucking guitarists do, sheesh calm your tits guys, Steve is an amazing man
The Professor doesn't suffer fools gladly.
I love Yes for their incredible music not the personality of certain band members.
Steve is a temperamental artist
He's always struck me as acting reserved but otherwise always seething over perceived lack of recognition of his imperious greatness...what an emaciated, buffoonish jackwagon.
During my last Yes show, Mr. Howe threat and insult a guy with an Ipad ... I was there and felt embarrassment for the guy and his wife... During the last 30 years I had the opportunity to meet almost all the band members and all of them always were very kind... Jon and Chris especially...
What happened exactly?
What happen?
I swear I met him in Providence and he groaned the same this when I shook his Ladyhand...
@@jerrybelsak9469 Or it could mean that he has a "Catching Germs" phobia.
😂😂😂
Steve, It's a light... lol
I wonder how many of these critcising commenters have never lost their temper ?????.
There are other examples of this with Mr. Howe
I have never in my life lost my temper and then threatened someone. Steve Howe is simply a dick.
@@magicalmystery1964 Everything I have seen and heard over 50 years says that's true
@@magicalmystery1964 BS
Who would dare film whilst Lemmy had a meltdown? I'd just run.
steve howe & christian bale should get together!
"Old man, you must sign zee papers!!"
-- Cheech and Chong
All of these guys knew that the techs were from CalPoly SLO (College). There's no reason to threaten the young student in anger with bodily harm. But then, the student probably could've held his own against Steve if he had to.
Steve “Skeletor” Howe probably weighs 140 lbs soaking wet. I hear he has refused to shake people’s hands for decades because he’s so frail. This is a classic “Old man yells at clouds” rant. 😂
Any of you holier-than-thou's ever actually worked under intense spot lighting before?
I thought not.
I have. So what.
+William Maddock
nicbeat
Doing what?
All Steve had to do was get together with the light man and discuss the problem and I'm sure things would have been fine...instead Howe just acts like a complete asshole.
motherthecar
He probably already did that. My guess is that that light man did not last long on that job.
It is quite a difference of dark no lights to a damn bright spot right in your eyes...,
Everyone is jumping on Steve Howe’s case but how do we know that this is something he has talked to the guy about before a lot and they just don’t seem to get the shit that would piss me off to. Hey they’re paying their salaries they should get it right.
Steve is great in guitar but I think would not be fun to take a road trip with. Way too serious for me
love the vegiterian line
And this behavior leads to a productive rehearsal, right?
I wonder why the recently scheduled 2023 Yes gigs have been postponed. ... ?
Come on, Howe is one of the best guitarists in the history of rock
Es zeigt was für ein schwieriger Charakter Steve Howe ist.
Very, Un pleasant. I just took down my Steve Howe poster.
Now we know why Steve won't let Jon rejoin Yes....he's just a prick lol
Steve Howe may be a great talent but he's an absolute prick of a human being. The fact that he simply replaced Alan White after he died a few weeks before the 2022 tour speaks volumes. Yet when his son died it was a different matter, all shows called off. This current lineup is all about one man's ego and it absolutely sucks. But I get the feeling Howe is loving the complete control of the band now that the other long-term members are either dead or no longer involved.

Alan White - Son
Which one do you think Steve should care about more. 🤦🏽♀️🤷🏿♀️😖🧐🙄
Steve Howe is a sun-sign Aries (April 8) and they are FAMOUS for their tempers, and being "temperamental"......
Howe should not be threatening anyone, he's a brittle twig of a man.
@alpha gamma behave yourself, look at the man.
😂
Nah fr
Never saw Steve lose the head before or since.Doesnt suit him, He'd have no chance against your average meat eater anyway.
Steve is way too small to be threatening people
Shameful and disgraceful behavior Steve. Its best not to meet your heroes.
I've net him several times and he's always been nice to me.
It’s burned your hair off Steve
Get over it Steve. Have your roadie use a flash light on your fingerboard. They do pretty much everything else for you.Nice archive video, Jon.
It's a lot easier to "judge" when this is a consistent pattern of behavior.
Another example of the "CLASSLESS" attitude that has become the by-word for Howe/Squire/White..I mean just look at the way they treated Benoit David. I bet that young guy on the spotlight could kick Howe's butt and then show him the meaning of 'Professional'. What a Prima Donna.
oh shit hes coming down to have words aaaaaaah
@elipper Where is this video of Jon you speak of? :)
Why does he reninds me a little bit on Ritchie Blacknore ? 🤔
He's what? 5'6, 140 pounds...a very intimidating force.
Sad man
Not an unreasonable request.Good for you Steve
Howe really takes himself seriously. Rabin seems to have more self-distance. Great guitarist though!
Howe is five foot nothing. He'd have trouble kicking a dwarf in the head.
Howe is 5 foot 10. That's taller than me, for what it's worth. But he's very slim partly because he's been a vegetarian for nearly 50 years.
Hey Steve, Jose Feliciano would like a word about playing in the dark... After that Jeff Healey has a few things he'd like to say. And in case you have any more questions I'm pretty sure Stevie Wonder can help you out.
bad vibe my ass , this how you get things done , way to go steve!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Typical Howe, it's why YES died years ago.
there' soooo many more reasons
Somebody in the crowd says "Oh man" 😃 I've been to a couple of gigs he did for a Pam Bay of the Steve Howe Appreciation Society at the Fitzwilliam Centre in Beaconsfield, he seemed fairly chilled then but he can clearly be an arsehole at times! 😃
Karen Howe.
😂😂😂
And Jon kicked Steve out of the band. They were going in a "new direction."
I know Steve got their first keyboard player kicked out. Then Squire recruited Wakeman and the rest is history
yeah I hear you bro,
Wasn't this a Steve Martin routine? "Could I possibly have a BLUE SPOT!"
Rick with the Hitler salute lol
I was expecting some music.
Any wonder YES split up so many times. Listened to them for 30yrs but not now, not with current lead singer murdering every song.
Watch your tounge!
Gurnlites, that all sounds understandable. But, why on the first night of the 3 shows was it still not right? Howe was showing anger fom the stage.
