Hey guys! In this video I will show you how to make rock candy! You can use it when you drink coffee and tea or you can gift it to someone as a present! It's easy and fun to make, you just need to be patient and have fun experimenting!
Things you will need:
-1 Cup of water
- 3,5 cups of sugar
The ratio should be about 1:3 when you use other measurements!
- Food colouring
- Jars
- Lollipop sticks/skewers
- Clothes pins
Tips for best results:
#1 Make sure the sugar on the skewer is fully dry!
What I've learned from experimenting is that it's really important that the sugar on the skewer is fully dry. If it's not, the sugar coating will fall off and the new crystals will have nothing to grow on. You can also end up with a glass full of sugar crystals and the skewers will get stuck to crystals that are growing on the bottom of the jar and you won't be able to remove the skewers without breaking anything!
To make sure the sugar is dry, you can prepare them the day before and use water instead of sugar liquid for example. I placed the coated skewers over my heating on some paper and let it dry. Then I rubbed off the excess sugar very carefully to make sure I remove everything that didn't stick to the skewer.
#2 You can boil the liquid again & add more sugar, if nothing is happening
You can add more sugar if you didn't have enough or add more water to avoid any left over crystals!
If you used this ratio I showed you and the sugar still dissolves, you have to add more sugar into the water until nothing dissolves any more. You will see it when there are crystals that don't want to go away. What worked for me is I added just a little bit of water so these crystals could crystallize as well. Then I knew I had enough sugar in it!
#3 Remove the hard pieces of sugar off the top & transfer the liquid into a new clean jar
If the crystals are growing on the skewers but the surface is full of crystals as well, you can remove the top and pour the liquid into a new clean jar and then place the skewers back into the jar!

Wow I've seen these in fancy tea shops and had no idea they were so easy to make :D! I love that you did so much experimentation to find the best method. I think many people (including myself) greatly underestimate how much time goes into making a video. Sometimes I watch seemingly "simple" tutorials and realise only after they show all the unsuccessful attempts at the end how many hours it actually took to film & edit that video.
Maqaroon Thank you so much! Yeah, since I really wanted to show how to make rock candy and make it work, I spend hours in the kitchen cooking sugar and cleaning jars, since so many of my attempts failed! And I had no idea why because I followed the instructions from different tutorials. But no one told what I had to keep in mind and what could go wrong and why! After weeks of trying and filming the process I finally got a proper rock candy! It's ridiculous how much time I spend trying it out, but it was really fun, I don't really know why! That's why I said, even if it doesn't work the first time, it's still really fun experimenting until you find the best method for yourself! :D Or maybe I'm just crazy, haha!
Your not crazy
Hi Maqaroon! I subscribed to you and Makoccinno. You guys are my favorite youtubers.
Whaaa?! I had no idea this is how they were made o_O Love how you're so thorough in everything!
SofiaStyled Aww thank you Sophia!
You guys are faster than me!! :D
Here's a tip but,not about rock candy
Ok here's the tip,1.make more videos 2.do more how to or based on how to 3.try making more clay videos because they work very well for Christmas and Christmas is like only 2-3 weeks away!!!
can you make me one of rock candy please thank you if you don't just tell me
+makoccino what do you mean?
a close friend of mine has living maple trees that she taps every winter. we both would like to try this experiment again, but with the maple water we collected from the trees and not regular tap water. would that work?

Thanks so much for all the work you put into this video. It was the first one on you tube that I watched and I don't feel like I need to look any further. It's also generous to post the recipe so viewers can easily have the reference right in front of them instead of having to retrace through the presentation.
Well done‼️
The pastel colored ones would look super adorbs
This was a complete and totle easy and fun project I enjoyed this with my grandchildren
i made this for my 7th grade science project. SUCCESS!! and it tasted delicious too. :)
Alexis Hayashi That's awesome!! Did it work the first time you tried it out?
makoccino the first trial i used brown sugar instead of white. it was terrible!! XD nothing had grown over a week of waiting, so i dumped that and bought white sugar and it actually worked. XD I was so happy!!

the reason I'm making rock candy is for my step brothers birthday this looks so cool and easy!
I've watched this all day there perfect Xmas presants
I usually only put one skewer into a glass off its own I no it's more washing up but found they grow bigger and sometimes I use ice Lilly containers works a treat xx
Ment lolly
Shannon Mulhall Yes! You shouldn't put too many in one cup or they won't grow as big!
yess what i needed thank you !
OMG. You are so amazing. You always have the best ideas.
Bashira Khan Aww thank you so much!
makoccino after the crystals form can you use the liquid in the jars more than once?
You would need to reheat the liquid again and add more sugar into it since most of the sugar would be now on the skewer!
Thank you Makoccino for the vid. I will give it a try. :)
I just love this very much and I have also made it in summer vacations .... Thank you very much!!!!!!
OK ok I've watched soooo many rock candy videos and nun of them show step by step and how to be ready to put them in the jar! When you store it, where do you put it?
Can it be put in the fridge? And if not, won't ants get to it?
Just put it in a zip lock bag or a larger jar that has a lid and you will be fine.

Prabha Aggarwal I'm glad I could help you out! ^_^
very sweet
What do I do if the sugar dissolves when I put in the solution
So cute
SUGAR•NOVA Thank you! ^_^
I can easily understand your videos. You are good at creating new ideas. I think you are the best ! :)
Just wondering, what would be the safest way to dispose of the leftover solution? Should I add heaps of water and pour it down the sink or just put it straight in the bin?
this is a true diy..
It takes alot of work♥♥♥♥♥♡♡♡♡
so cool I'm going to make this tommrow
Actually when you boil the water must measure the temperature until 109-111°c .If not it will not become bigger than this.
As sugar is a molecular compound, it cannot dissolve. Also this video is great!
I know this is over 4 years old, but in the interest of preventing misinformation: yes, sugar and other molecular compounds can dissolve. I think the word you were thinking of is "dissociate," which is typically unique to ionic compounds and very few molecular compounds (acids).
o_o this process was way more faster than when i did this for a birthday i wish i say this before
MAUD PIE LIKES THIS
OMG yes
ikr XD
Thanks! I've always wanted to make rock candy!
+Alphasquishy12 r u being sarcastic?

Regular white sugar :)
makoccino is white sugar the same as granulated? Sorry if that was a stupid question
Emily Neumen yes it is
Ria Maan white sugar

whoa! i didn't know you could make them so easily. definitely making for my friends and family for christmas. thank you
Cannot wait to try this
I tried these and gave these to my friends.they were enjoying it.💙 Now they also started watching it videos📱. They told me that it videos are amazing!!
Did this experiment work like showed in the video? I have to do it for science and I did a different video it didn't work. Then, I found this video and I wanted to make sure
+Marissa McGuire first when I did this,my lollipop stick's sugar dissolved in the sugar mixture.then again add sugar on my stick and let it dry it worked well.one thing is u have to do it in the correct way as the video says
+Marissa McGuire I think u can't do take it for science experiment
Oh ok! Thank you :)
U r welcome 😊☺
I have a question is it supposed to harden because my whole thing hardened so I took it all out melted it added more water and put it back
Congrats on 100k subscriber mako!! So happy for you! ^.^
Awww thank you so much!!
Hi I hope your answer.. i let my sticks to dry with the sugar and then when I add it to the cooled mixture it just disappears.. i tried adding more sugar to the water and still doing the same
so cool
is it just the lighting that made the rock candy in the end look ombre ish? its really pretty :)
c zhu You mean the green rock candy? I think it was by accident when I made them :D
Wow! Beautiful!!

can i use sugar cane sugar?
So going to try this! I wuv rock candy. ^^
Me to😛
I love this 🍉🌸🍉
For the flavoring can you use extract
after the crystals form can you use the liquid in the jars more than once?
I tried it and it so tasty 😋😋
Hey Mako can we test it? Please reply.
After seeing this video 2 months ago, I literally went to Party City to buy some to eat xD
LittleSurprisesYT Awww haha XDD
I tried making the rock candy but at first it was just watery and not working so then i reboiled it added more water and i waited 6 days and then it was all hard and it turned into a slushy and the stick had no rock candy on it.But thank you for your video! I will soon try again untill it works:) love ur videos.
Alroza Rasy Aww! Yes that happened to me a lot, that's why I spent a few days experimenting so I can add the tips to the video as well in case people will have the same problems as I did! But eventually it will work!
ohmigod it looks so preeeettyy, will try it soon!!
You know what I want to see? I want to see rock candy of different colors. Like start off with Red and after some of the crystals form then put it into a mixture of blue and so on
i am making these candy right now
Does anyone know if you could make these sour? Like by adding citric acid or something? Or would it mess up the recipe..
starkiss6 tip:Add the sour sugar at the end
This is actually pretty cool c: I remember a similar science experiment (crystallization) c: the solution had to be fully saturated before it can crystalize :33 ^^
ZeldaGirl35 Yes! :)
CAN U PLEASE REPLY ME I really need help. One cup of water and 3,5cup sugar is to what gram I don't really understand the meaning
Does it grow in 3 days or it has to be more than that??
Cool
I love 💕 the candies but I don’t have food Coloring
If you use the sugar gel to dip the stick it the loose sugar will hold better also don't hit the stick on the bottom of the glass that's why their getting stuck the loose sugar is falling to the bottom giving the bottom of the glass a way for larger crystals to grow and join the stick :-)
+makoccino Could you please do a video of these crystals but non edible?? I would like some as room decor but not to be sticky at a certain temperature. I've heard that 'Borax crystals/salt' replaces the sugar but it is unavailable in my local stores in UK and was unsure if regular table salt and this video's guide and ratio would fit. Thanks 💛💛
I am so making these
Fantastik
The sugar coating doesn't dry fully
And when I put them in the jar the sugar fall down
How should u clean the jars? Or do u have to throw them out afterwards?
Crafty Girlz I used hot water and let the hot water melt the sugar. Just did that a few times!
How many can you make with these ingredients?? Please reply
this is cool but how to get the sticks.
they look yummy 😍
This is so cute!!! Thank you
Anastasia Lomakina Thank you! ^_^
Does the water have to be room temp or can it be warm, but not hot
that's so awesome
Thank you;)
Such a great gift idea:D
