    On July 4, 2021, a Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) crashed after an attempted landing at Jolo Airport in Sulu, Philippines. With 53 deaths, of which 50 people were on the aircraft and 3 on the ground, the incident is the deadliest aviation accident in Philippine military history.
    At least 45 people have died after a Philippine Air Force plane crashed in the southern Philippines on Sunday, as rescue and recovery operations continue amid the country's worst military air disaster in decades.
    The C-130 military plane was transporting troops from Cagayan de Oro, in Mindanao, to Sulu province when it missed the runway on the island of Jolo, CNN affiliate CNN Philippines reported, citing Armed Forces Chief Cirilito Sobejana.
    The plane, which was carrying more than 90 military personnel and crew, crashed into nearby Patikul village at 11:30 a.m. local time on Sunday (11:30 p.m. ET).
    "Minutes after the crash, troops and civilian volunteers rushed to the site for search and rescue. Per eyewitnesses, a number of soldiers were seen jumping out of the aircraft before it hit the ground sparing them from from the explosion caused by the crash," according to a press release by Joint Task Force Sulu.
    Images from a local TV station appeared to show the burning wreck of the plane and thick smoke billowing from the village. A large plume of smoke is seen in images of the crash rising up through the palms to the blue sky.
    Among those killed are 42 military personnel and three civilians. Of the 53 people injured, 49 are military personnel and four are civilians, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said. The civilians killed and injured were on the ground at the site of the crash.
    At least 50 people were hospitalized after the crash, with some being evacuated to the city of "Zamboanga to undergo further treatment," according to the statement by the Joint Task Force Sulu.
    Five military personnel who were on board the plane are still missing, the army said.
    Joint Task Force Sulu Commander William N Gonzales said the personnel traveling on the plane "were supposed to report to their battalions today. They were supposed to join us in our fight against terrorism."
    The Philippines Air Force told CNN in a statement that the plane was carrying 96 people, many of whom were army personnel reporting for duty.
    Military and civilian firefighters have been deployed to put out the fire and rescue operations are focused on pulling survivors from the crash site, according to CNN Philippines.
    This is the country's worst military air disaster in around 30 years, Reuters reported. In 1993, a Philippines Air Force C-130 crashed, killing 30 people.
    The Lockheed Martin C-130 aircraft had recently arrived in the Philippines. It was one of two aircraft granted by the U.S. government's military financing program, according to a US government website announcement in February.
    Sunday's crash comes weeks after a newly acquired S-70i Black Hawk utility helicopter crashed during a night flight about 60 miles north of the capital Manila. All six people on board died, according to CNN Philippines.
    It was one of a number of new combat utility helicopters bought by the armed forces in its bid to modernize its fleet, according to a Philippines government website.
    The military personnel were supposed to bolster the battalions fighting against Abu Sayyaf, a Filipino jihadi group based in Sulu that has been involved in bomb attacks and piracy for decades. The group proclaimed allegiance to ISIS in 2014.

    I BELIEVE this video...the top brass said... the C130 FLEW.from Manila to.Cagayan de Oro. then to Patikul... pilots are veteran pilots... seasoned pilots... it overshoots the runway because Patikul runway is short...
    RUNWAYS should be made OVERSIZE OR OVERSTANDARD why? in case the pilot overestimate the touchdown of the airplane's wheel by 300 meters ... no problem because it has a 2 kilometers of runway allowance more .
    This has happened several times in commercial flights in NIA in the past....
    PILOT OVERSHOOTS RUNWAY... because Runways should have....3kilometer allowance....
    these are large aircraft that needs more power to lift... and more runways to slowdown..
    IF C130 REACH PATIKUL FROM.MANILA if it has engine trouble c130 passengers burial is at sea. or the pilot is inexperience it has not reach patikul sulu...
    RUNWAYS should be build ... OVERSTANDARD for safety reason... it is better to over estimate than underestimate... landing an aircraft wheels is not an EXACT science. like 100 m + 100 m equals 200.m..
    there is a MORE OR LESS meters involved.

    Napaka ikli po ng runway isa yan sa problema ng piloto kawawa naman ang mga tao.
    Sana po medyo habaan ang Runway at laparan para mga susunod wala ng mag bubuwis ng buhay.

      Inimprove na po yung runway even before the accident. Also, matagal na din po naglaland and depart mga C130 don according to another pilot. Ngayon lang talaga nagkaproblem.

    The video has several factual errors in the reporting. C-130H can land on a runway this short, but the pilot must have experience with Maximum Effort Assault Landings. Actual videos show the aircraft hitting the box panels, but could have had too much ground speed to make the landing without a bounce. For a successful Max Effort you have to plant in the LZ and keep the aircraft planted to the ground. Bounce and you must do a go around.

    Having flown C130 for over 20 years, I suspect the aircraft was too heavy to achieve a go around on that short runway...ask yourself...how much fuel was on board, how much gear for 96 troops...how much extra gear ie food, ammo and supply's. How much runway had he used when he attempted the go around? All of these and more would have affected the aircraft.

      What's the purpose of that runway gap?also some witness saw soldiers jumping out before the plane crashed into the trees. How do they know that the plane will crash and decided to open the door and jump?

    This was a reconstruction of the crash, and in both cases there was a fundemental flaws They were both coming in too fast, and had not set flaps , thus allowing a greater area of airflow over the wings at a slower speed. If the Pilot pulled up for a go around the flaps would have given him more air lift ! Cause of accident - pilot error and lack of training.

      There might be a mechanical error to cause flaps to not deploy at the pilot's command. Flight recorder will tell everything.

      @@philnightjar1971 if the plane has been serviced and repaired according to the manual, it would have been able to fly correctly. As i understand it was a relatively new plane too " Military spokesman Edgard Arevalo said the plane was in “very good condition” and had 11,000 flying hours remaining before its next maintenance was due. "

      how did you know that flaps was not set? have you analyzed the black box? the actual video is not showing any close up video on the wing area so cant conclude if the flaps was set or not.But I agree that the plane was seem to be approaching fast to a runway only 1030 meters long only

    Any time I go to an unfamiliar airport, I always do a low approach so I can FIRST take a looksee at what I'm about to 'commit' to.
    It's during this surveillance approach that you may spot things you don't like.
    Remember, it's an AIRplane, not a hedge-trimmer, you can always go elsewhere. I'm sure the army has trucks to transport the pax from the alternate airport to the original.

    The calculation of the pilot is correct but due to the changes movement of the wind its difficult to handle😭, accident happened every time, stop blaming the pilot because his been a pilot already before this accident happened,

    it could have been a "touch and go" but lack of power to gain lift and thrust...lack of knowledge, training and experience seems to be the factors. C-130's and P-3's are the safest aircraft's in the US military.

      I think it was the pilot he didn't know what to do as you can see he landed fast and he ran out of runway so what he did was climb but didn't have enough lift and the plane stalled and crashed the AC 130 can handle more than just wind shear but I wont Blame the pilot he did what he did and it's done so what are we we make mistakes

Sa pag baba palang mabilis na so maaring sa taas may probs na baka weather. Malalaman lang yan after ng imbistigasyon. Maari ding human error or subrang Iksi lang talaga ng run way nila para sa ganyan ka laki

    At what speed should any C130 with out Cargo be traveling when landing on a general short run way like the one in Sulu? Next question... What speed should the C130 h with military cargo be traveling when coming in for landing on this type of runway? If any skilled pilot can provide some reall answers, id like to know. Because the C130 is no plane to be crashing and most of all... not being mindfull of the weight, speed, and its landing geographics.
    Im really hoping that the brave men in Uniform who put their lives at risk everyday in serving the Philippines becomes more skilled, more trained, more advanced and most of all, more safe when conducting these type of task.

    Your technical data didn't mention why the didn't the pilot deploy his flaps , w/c many witnesses noticed no flaps, if he had used it earlier in into Cagayan de Oro w/ o a hitch. The C-130 is like a double deck aircraft , underneath the sleeping quarters of the crew is a room were most electrical circuits turn into hydraulic instructions . Upon landing everyone would have been strapped to their seats and no one is allowed to wonder around. Something severed the hydraulic to the flaps within second of the approach.🤔 Your animation shows accurate description . Too bad that plane has reverse thrusters doesn't it. Just reverse angle of the prop.

      @@rosanaarcelo6740 it is a standard procedure to have air force load master he calculates the weight that comes onboard. The mystery is why the air brakes or main flaps was not fully developed , what we see the alieron went up barely two seconds when plane touch the ground. Another thing why didn't the pilot deploy the reverse thrusters by twisting the pitch of the propellers to stop, was there a hydraulic communication problem.??

    Notice the simulated Aircraft had Flaps set full retracted. The results of a Flaps Up Landing are nearly always catastrophic and this simulation is almost exactly how it would occur. Now the question is, did the real life C-130 have Flaps deployed and if so, when and at what angle.

      The c130 is capable by 4000+. But the load of the c130 was 39,150lbs (92 people and 2 heavy vehicles). The runway was 6000+ feet which is EXTREMELY short for the c130 with that heavy load.

      highly trained but runway is not sufficient. it will never reach patikul if it lacks experience.
      commercial flights too experience this problem ... Runways should be built oversize in length... because estimates differ for each pilot during lift off or touchdown..its not an exact science...

      I highly doubt the highly trained part since our Airforce lacks equipment, no specialized training facilities and having only a handful of aircraft reserve for pure training purposes

    This Simulator looks like FSX to me and if so, it is designed to simulate real and exact conditions, effects, movement, impacts, etc and though not perfect, it is VERY good. Real world pilots use it to learn new approaches and landmarks.

    Yon nga ang mahirap d porki aranong na magpalipad e pilot na. Wala rin yan pinag kaiba sa driver ng sasakyan maraming marunong.mag drive peru walang alam sa traffic rules at mga traffic sign. At lalo na hindi alam pag dating sa emergency situation kng ano dapat gawin.. ito ang masakit na katutuhanan ..yng plane na yon ilang taon na ginagamit sa ibng bansa walang problima peru pag dating dito ilang bwan pa lng bumagsak na agad.. dahil po yon sa kakulngan pa sa kakalaman ng piloto.. oonaniniwala ako magaling magpapalipad yon peru .. peru dpa sapat ang kanyang nlalaman

    I think the landing area is too small for the big plane...and also thinking about the pilot error.maybe it is the one reason why the plane cant stop of the landing area

    I see human error in the accident, the plane is in percect condition and no separatist attack can justify on downing the plane. The pilot simply miscalculated the runway and the weight of its cargoes (personnels and equipments including trucks). Our military pilots must have regular training it ee
    we want to minimize accidents and preserve our meager assets.
