    I was watching this for the overtakes which i thought were smooth and what I’d expect from a very advanced rider the whole combination of the follow to the overtake position and smooth transition to the overtake keeping good distance off the car. Translating the book some think that the ride should be this staggered positioning like a diagram like a cartoon, I feel that by the time you’d made sure you looked like the book examples the overtake opportunity would be dangerous almost visually as if you were overtaking on a dual carriageway. Watching the video was clear and informative and I’m thinking Gold, anticipation was great and well done for a great video, but the suspense really had me :-)

    At 8.00 you were presumably still on the A49 ( with I presume a 60 mph speed limit ) but you were only some 60/70 ft behind the car in front and at 60 mph. and as you said they were maintaining the speed limit you should have been some 240 ft behind them if in the following position.

    At 3.37 did you notice that the signage was wrong, it showed you that ahead there was a right hand bend and the next sign below it was for a bridge with narrowing road. They should have been the other way round with the narrow bridge first and the right hand bend last. Just thought I would mention that when you see multiple signs the nearest should be first ok.
    Just a bye the bye your first road a 60 mph limit I believe as I saw no speed repeater signs and you came to within about 40 ft of the white car in front . Not recommended at speeds of maybe 50 mph plus to be so close but one could argue that you were looking for an overtake at that time but then again one could argue that you were in fact tailgating couldn't one. If he had had to brake hard or stop suddenly for any reason would you have been able to avoid hitting him. Some would think not. Then when u you did overtake you started to accelerate before the truck coming the other way had completely passed and you were again closer up to and directly behind the car in front and you swerved over to the offside when the truck had just about passed. You should have waited , moved over to the other side of the road, established that yhe road was clear and then accelerated. That would have been a lot safer and in accord with the Police Handbook. Just as Tailgating is? but then it seemed that you overtook just for the point of overtaking.

    • @motorvelo
      @motorvelo  4 года назад

      Appreciate your comments. Examiner obviously thought all was OK as I received a RoSPA Gold. Tailgating would imply that I followed closely for some distance, which I did not. I am well aware of the three position overtake and also using anticipation to plan the next manoeuvre based on the information I have already taken in and applied to my riding plan. AS for 'Police Handbook' I am assuming you mean Roadcraft.

    Very interesting at 3:30 but the triangular warning signs are in the wrong order on the pole - according to the pole, you should have come into the bend followed by the bridge - it could be interesting at night for drivers that don't know the road - wonder if they're still the same?

    I don’t know if it was the camera, but I thought you looked pretty close to the vehicle you were following at times. Also, at around 5 mins, you managed to only overtake one of two vehicles. Was it really worth it? The driver of the car you overtook, seemed to be making decent progress, to the vehicle in front of him. The fact you overtook him, making no further progress, no doubt meant that he had to drop back.
    Just my humble opinion. Congratulations anyway 👏🏻

    • @motorvelo
      @motorvelo  4 года назад

      The opportunity to overtake the first vehicle presented itself and no opportunity to take the second presented itself. However you can only tell that with hindsight. Had I stayed where I was I would have been subject to a speed and manner of driving dictated by both vehicles and maybe trying to overtake both at a later date.
      You should safely take you opportunities when they arise.
      How often do we overtake something and go down the road when behind us that vehicle may have only travelled another quarter mile and then turned off. How would we know before that?

  • @rcraven1013
    @rcraven1013 5 месяцев назад

    Nice ride but about 5.00 you stated that one would fall back into the following position yet the distance you remained in was about 40/50 ft behind that car and at a speed of say 40 mph you should have been about 120ft. behind it and if doing say 50 mph. one should have been at least 175 ft behind. You then overtook it and pulled in between that car and another in front and again you were only some 40 ft behind it.
    None of the distances that you gave were safe at all.. The same thing happened right at the beginning whilst following another car. It appears you have a problem knowing the difference between the safe stopping distance and the following on distances and the overtaking distance.
    At one point you were following close behind another car and decided to overtake but instead of moving out first to enable a better view of the road ahead and then accelerating into the overtake you were behind and accelerated first and then swooped or swerved out into the overtake thus making yourself again closer, about 30 ft only behind that car you were overtaking.
    Those closer positionings could lead you into trouble at any time when you are following others.

    Just after 9.00 you are approaching a staggered junction and seeing a car to your nearside with the driver waiting for you to pass you commented on looking at the drivers eyes watching you and presumed all was ok and safe. Not so unfortunately. No advice in any safety handbook says that to you can rely on spotting someone looking in your direction and presume that you are being seen. There are many other signs that you could look for but that is not one of them .. A dangerous practise to assume one has been seen.
    After that you mention a nice left hander [ you are obviously aware of the road ahead ] and one can hear that you are accelerating through it to the end rather than maintaining a constant throttle. So your leaving speed was greater than your entry speed. You carried that speed over the bridge only to be confronted by a car waiting at an entry on your nearside and whooops! fortunately it did not enter your road otherwise you would have been in all sorts of trouble.

    Nice video and notes, thanks :) I'm currently just starting my IAM advanced badge and wonder if you can clear up a question? Let's say an overtake is on while riding on a 60mph 'normal', single carriageway road. The car driver is doing around 55mph. Would it be an instant fail if, during the overtake, I nudged it to 65mph to get past the car briskly and then dropped back down to 60mph once past him?
    My own thought is that it probably would be a fail as the law had been broken. But I've also read and heard (even from traffic police) that, as long as the conditions were good and the manoeuvre safe, 'common sense' would prevail - as hanging out alongside a car by riding only a 5mph faster (a brisk walking pace) could in itself be potentially dangerous.
    Or should I simply be content at riding at 55 in a 60 (possibly being penalised for not making sufficient 'progress')?
    Thanks.

    • @motorvelo
      @motorvelo  4 года назад +1

      2Niels First of all good luck with your advanced course.
      Now the overtake. You should never attempt an overtake when you know you will have to break the speed limit to complete the manoeuvre. 55mph is a really tricky speed. In an ideal work with nothing coming the other way you could safely perform an overtake with the 5mph overlap. Unfortunately the world is not a perfect place!! An examiner will not usually fail you if for a valid reason you did break the limit slightly during the manoeuvre as long as you hadn’t planned to break the limit and as long as you can justify with good reason the extra speed. What I would say is that on your test try hard not to. Overtaking is not a requirement and a legal overtake may not present itself to you. However you should show that you are looking for the opportunity. This should become obvious during you course. Too many new associates have this target fixation on overtaking.

    • @2Niels
      @2Niels 4 года назад

      @@motorvelo Thanks for the clarification. I have sometimes feel 'pressured' (possibly too strong a word) into making 'progress' and overtaking. It can be difficult to ride your own ride and not try and second-guess what you think your observer is wanting you to do. Your answer makes perfect sense :)

    • @buncobooth
      @buncobooth 4 года назад

      This is the most difficult situation to handle on test, the dilemma of whether to overtake cars going slightly less than the limit. In my experience the examiner will tell you their expectations about this but every one I have been with didn't have a problem about you pinching a bit of speed on overtakes in national speed limits. They probably won't allow it in 30/40/50 but nationals are OK. The worst thing you can do is try and overtake a car doing 55 at 60, you either leave it and drop back or do it and go past and get the move done (within reason) !

    • @judgedredd49
      @judgedredd49 4 года назад

      @@buncobooth Things have changed since these replies were made and no training authority will allow anyone exceeding the speed limit at any time for overtakes or anything else. Its a definite Fail. For far too long the advice was no but so so long as it's a one off and not happening perpetually then one would probably get away with it. This changed a few years ago but some instructors and examiner would have turned a blind eye to it but it is not allowed. We are wanting to be Advanced riders and that means we don't break the law [ unless to do so would put our lives at risk then if prosecuted one would have to argue that in a court of law ] If an overtake is not on then its pretty simple to pull back to the safer full stopping distance. Don't sit in the contact or Tailgating position as some do in a belief that an opportunity may possibly arise in the future. That's a fail also.
      Never believe that you are required to make one or pressured to make an overtake. If in doubt don't do it,. Too many riders make mistakes on overtakes and it comes down to tailgating or pressure to make an inappropriate one sometimes and apart from corners or bends it the second worst riding practise that creates many incidents and deaths , etc.

    • @buncobooth
      @buncobooth 4 года назад

      @@judgedredd49 I agree with the intention of that and it is correct in the eyes of the law but in my experience of advanced riding and doing tests it is not very pragmatic. I have had the conversation about speed limits as I mentioned above with several very highly qualified instructors/test examiners and I have exceeded the theoretical speed limit on numerous tests where it was done within the brief and it has not been challenged. I think if you really stuck to the legal guidelines as you state there, either you won't make sufficient progress or you will end up doing dangerous overtakes by putting yourself in a position of danger (on the wrong side of the road) for longer than is absolutely necessary. It is something that can't be condoned, but in reality the situation is not quite as clear cut as that. Just my experience !
      Your comments about overtakes are correct, people do make the mistake of following too closely for too long and also feeling pressure to overtake (especially in a test/training situation) which often leads to problems.
